[Jeff]
I was wondering why there is such an emphasis on blogs as the default indieweb format? i.e. in the principles page https://indieweb.org/principles page, owning a blog is the "best statement of #indieweb principles" and on the homepage, blogging is the assumed default, "Beyond Blogging and Decentralization"...
#
[Jeff]
to me, blogs (and microblogging) are ephemeral and value recency over quality. whereas I think a lot of good content lasts forever. what's wrong with regular timestamped articles?

[Jeff]: cos that's how it started? but the real core part of that statement is "It is our very own personal space online. We control it"."
#
Ruxton
and with that in hand, it doesn't matter if you write often or you write sparingly
#
tracydurnell[d]
@Jeff if you are posting your interactions with others from your own site, to some extent your site is a living thing where recency might be important for participating in current conversations? But also you might check out commonplace books / digital gardens that may be organized in a less temporal way https://indieweb.org/commonplace_book
#
[Jeff]
oh interesting, yes that's close to the model I was thinking about. thanks!

does anyone know of any good tools to easily archive a site to a localised folder? Got a few apps I wanna backup and keep around without wasting stacks of RAM keeping the uop
#
capjamesg[d]
How about wget?
#
capjamesg[d]
wget -r abc.xyz
#
aaronpk
What is Spiderpig?
#
Loqi
Spiderpig is a web crawler for archiving a website as static HTML files https://indieweb.org/Spiderpig
#
aaronpk
read that page about why wget isn't enough :-)
#
[tantek]1
Maybe we need a page specifically for wget in order to clearly communicate that in its dfn. For better discoverability / more precise citability
#
[tantek]1
what is wget
#
Loqi
wget is a unix utility for recursively downloading and archiving webpages https://indieweb.org/wget
#
[tantek]1
^ that dfn should include a brief summary of why wget is not enough and directly mention Spiderpig as an alternative
#
[KevinMarks]
one problem with spiderpig is that if you have an RSS or Atom feed at a path like /feed without an extension, it turns into an index.html file and is then served with the wrong mime type

Instead of all this "web3" crypto hubris, how about we all just host our own stuff? #SelfHosted #IndieWeb

Worth an RT?
#
sknebel
[tantek]1: just double-checking, you dont need to register attendees for IWC beforehand or something like that and thus I could join last-minute? this week isn't great, so I'd decide tomorrow evening if I can do it or not
#
[tantek]1
That should be fine sknebel. Also feel free to grab a free Tito ticket anyway. We didn’t put a limit on it. So it’s ok to get a “maybe” ticket

What are suggested follows
#
Loqi
who to follow (AKA people to follow or recommended users) is a feature on a site that suggests people or other accounts to follow, likely using a recommendation engine https://indieweb.org/suggested_follows
#
[tantek]1
who to follow << '''Suggested follows''' is a Twitter feature that is displayed when you click the Follow button on a profile, that is described under its heading as “A set of accounts that work well with (display name of current profile)”
#

commonplace books << Journalist John Dickerson [https://twitter.com/jdickerson/status/1458036871531937798 indicates] that he uses [[Instagram]] as a commonplace: https://www.instagram.com/jfdlibrary/ where he keeps a collection of photo "cards" with quotes from famous people rather than photos. He also keeps collections there of photos of notes from scraps of paper as well as photos of [[annotation]]s he makes in books.

↩️ Unfortunately I think the "people who care about the same things I do" is probably IndieWeb (https://indieweb.org/), and that's nowhere near going mainstream. It's extremely niche and nerdy.

I came across multiple broken links in the wiki lately. Is there a possibility to auto-check/search it for broken links and mark them?
