[chrisaldrich] In relation to the canoe earlier, I'm pretty sure we documented somewhere on the wiki that in an early popular press article about Mastodon (from Spring 2017, iirc), that already several of the instances mentioned in the article no longer exist. Federation doesn't necessarily improve longevity, particularly at a time before moving data between instances didn't exist.
