Join @indiewebcamp at a pop-up this Saturday 1/22 to talk about using our websites to enhance our offline lives, and pulling our tangible world into the digital. #indieweb https://events.indieweb.org/2022/01/indiewebcamp-popup-analog-meets-online-b8c2zEb33yBS

Logistics question re: popup on Saturday - will anyone be there who can launch the zoom, or do I need to get a login?
#
tracydurnell[d]
Also, other than taking a picture and transferring the etherpad into the wiki afterwards, is there anything else I need to remember to do? πŸ˜‰
#
sknebel
aaronpk can give you the login info
#
sknebel
also I guess have some initial words ready, mention the etherpad etc (the things also listed on the event page already)
#
tracydurnell[d]
πŸ‘ thanks πŸ™‚
#
aaronpk
some more notes here, although a lot of it is for in-person events https://indieweb.org/IndieWebCamp_Organizing
#
tracydurnell[d]
cool, I'll take a look!
#
aaronpk
at this point, wouldn't hurt to add a section to that page for remote events :)
#
tracydurnell[d]
alas, true πŸ˜‰
#
GWG
Maybe we'll take notes tomorrow night for that

What is tracking
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "tracking" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "tracking is ____", a sentence describing the term)

↩️ I'm working on a project http://anagora.org it's sort of like indieweb except we have our own protocols for moving data around and the lingua franca is markdown not html

[tantek]
capjamesg[d] re: updates to /meta β€” did you mean to conflate <meta> and <link>? Right now that page is a lot more confusing than it was with the simple if snarky dfn.
#
[tantek]
the heading "meta tags in the indieweb community" is also misleading and the content is all about the <link> tag, not <meta>, and frankly already covered by /discovery-algorithms
#
[tantek]
in addition to don't make a bad copy/version of something already on Wikipedia, we should probably say the same about don't make a bad copy/version of something already on MDN
#
[tantek]
like there's no need for us to define every HTML tag
#
[tantek]
anyway, capjamesg[d], LMK how you'd like to proceed with cleaning up that page. if it were me I'd revert to the snarkinition and start over with asking *what purpose* that page is supposed to be serving on the indieweb wiki instead of trying to shoehorn/braindump content that is largely nothing to do with the top (meta tag).

Good call [tantek]. I didn't mean to convey both of those tags as separate things. Thanks!
#
capjamesg[d]
I have reverted the page for now and we can see if this comes up again in the community.

[tantek]
That's not the say the page can't be improved, I mean it *should* be improved, but done so with deliberate IndieWeb-wiki-pecific use-case and purpose per /wikify
#
[tantek]
wiki-specific*
#
capjamesg[d]
What would you like to see on the page [tantek]?
#
Ruxton
i find it kinda odd the whole twitter conversation with moonlion started from a "managing my own website" being the issue of contention and the last tweet above is replying to me telling me they're implementing their own protocols and platforms
#
Ruxton
so very contradictory
#
[tantek]
yeah, I'm not sure what to make of that either
#
[tantek]
great sympathy for the "managing your website" /admintax though β€” that's for real
#
[tantek]
everything from DNS setup to HTTPS certs (still only a minority of webhosts support LetsEncrypt) is way too much of a pain
#
[tantek]
I mean sure we have a static HTML GitHub homepage starter project and that can be done relatively quickly, if you have someone walking you through it (the GitHub instructions are still way too lengthy for something that should be a "pick a folder" and "flip a switch")
#
[tantek]
(I remember when Macs actually let you do that in their preferences. Sharing / Start Webserver / pick folder and it "just worked")
#
Ruxton
ahh yes, when I couldn't afford a Mac :P at least that's real again :)

and it announced it over DNS-SD/mDNS so you could browse servers on the same network in Safari.

[KevinMarks] would love to know why that feature was removed (or maybe only hidden?) if you know of any of that background
#
[tantek]1
and yeah that mDNS support was also awesome
#
[KevinMarks]1
I could ask - I hubli there was a general removal of dev like tools including the Apache install that was part of the web sharing
#
Zegnat
That removal in macOS is surely still ongoing? Isn’t it planned to drop php/ruby/whatever not too far into the future as well?
#
@schnarfed
↩️ For example, https://indieweb.org/web_hosting currently recommends https://micro.blog/, which is basically a social network that just happens to let you serve your profile on your own domain. They can even handle the registration and DNS automatically, behind the scenes.
(twitter.com/_/status/1483866421293502464)
#
@schnarfed
↩️ Totally. Admin tax is real! One thing I like is that the IndieWeb tries to not gatekeep and require your own servers or software, just a domain and data portability, which means you can avoid most/all of the admin tax.

lol no that was fine I think. you started with agreement, which is usually a good way to start a conversation with someone new, and gave a specific positive example
