#[fluffy]I think a couple of my tweets about the page got spread widely by a lot of people angry about VRChat. I've also gotten some rather unhelpful responses as my blog post spread throughout Mastodon.
#[tantek]aaronpk, since you last "touched" it, do you remember the purpose of this page or what problem(s) it was trying to solve for the IndieWeb? trying to decide if it is worth keeping, or redirecting to a subsection somewhere or just deleting
#[tantek]is this page about hotspotting? or what is that term when people turn their mobile phone into a wifi router?
#[fluffy]It looks like it's about mobile hotspot providers. Funnily enough I've used most of the products on that page and I suppose I *could* fill that in, but... what's the point?
#[tantek]that's exactly the question [fluffy], I'm trying to figure out what's the point
#[tantek]one possible (narrow?) use-case that the page could be trying to capture / present solutions for is: mobile (as in the adjective) interaction with the web, without requiring: Wifi or a phone or a phonecall or an SMStexting service
#[tantek]the ironic thing is, I think I'm in the space of people that want / use this use-case yet I haven't seen this page before and I'm mildly interested in documenting it
#[tantek]ok that's enough reason to keep it. thanks [fluffy]++
#Loqi[fluffy] has 5 karma in this channel over the last year (32 in all channels)
#[tantek]i.e. voice is "for free" because the phone companies make money from voice phone spammers
#[tantek]yet another instance of, if the service is free, you (your attention) is the product that is being sold
#[tantek]I believe something similar has happened / is happening to SMS, that is, the business model for SMS is no longer consumers paying for SMS services but rather phone companies charging SMS spammers to acceess their network to mass-spam people (you), e.g. for political donations etc.
#[tantek]these are both strong reasons for data-only plans, because what are they going to do, spam port 80 and hope I have a webmention receiver endpoint open at some well-known URL? lol
#[tantek]we could retcon moblogging to mean only doing it from a "feature phone" 🙂
#[fluffy]that's true, but you can also put devices into do not disturb mode now
#[fluffy]or reject calls/texts from numbers which aren't in your contacts
#[tantek][fluffy] yes there are non-default workarounds, that's not the point, it requires (pro)active labor on the part of the user which means it is designed for default abuse by marketers
#[fluffy]not to mention the exemptions for political purposes yeah
#[tantek]like they should at least have to pay 13¢ per SMS or minute of phone call, with perhaps 12¢ going to the person receiving, i.e. automatically applying as a credit toward their monthly bill, and then potentially acquiring a surplus which then results in a monthly check to the person receiving. adjust 12¢ upwards to whatever is the per-minute minimum wage in your country/state.
#[tantek]12¢/min was derived from the U.S. baseline of $7.25/hr
#LoqiJust generated this week's newsletter! You still have a few minutes to make changes, and I'll re-generate it 10 minutes before it gets sent out at 3pm Pacific time. https://indieweb.org/this-week/2022-07-29.html
