#

#
barnaby

#
[aciccarello]
The last post I see on that fediverse vs indieweb seems to be a strange take
#
[aciccarello]
> • Fediverse is (as of now) a bad fit for capitalism
#
[aciccarello]
> • indieweb is a good fit for capitalism
#
barnaby
yeah I’d be curious to know what the thinking behind that is, and whether it’s deeper than indieweb not typically being a service people can get accounts on for free
#
barnaby
the indieweb approach is definitely much more individualistic, but projects like micro.blog show how you can establish a balance between community and own-domain content ownership IMO
#
barnaby
and the individualism is based less on political ideology and more on a long history of observing siloed identities and content disappear
#
[aciccarello]
Yeah, it seems to be an observation mostly based on "communal" vs "individual"

[tantek]
re: Mastodon criticism, please feel encouraged to update with more information!
#
[tantek]
there's distinctions between "can an org join or must it all be individuals?" and "can a brand join?" and "no advertising". those aren't the same. and when like that are ambiguous, then it leaves it up to the whims of the admin, which frankly is a valid criticism
#
[tantek]
I double-checked to be sure I was quoting properly. "spam, advertising, etc are not allowed" from https://octodon.social/about
#
[tantek]
e.g. if someone is saying, "here's my patreon if you like my work", is that advertising?
#
aaronpk
that's not a terribly clear definition 😂
#
[tantek]
or: "if you'd like to support my run for charity, here's a link"
#
aaronpk
but in any case if i read that i would not have tried to make an account for a business
#
[tantek]
a business that is values aligned with the summary of that server might think they'd be welcome
#
[tantek]
which tbh DNA Lounge very much is with its inclusiveness and anti-abuse policies (of the club itself)
#
[tantek]
and frankly, if that's the policy (no business), then they could state that up front: no organization, business, or brand accounts
#
[tantek]
since that's quite the norm (that accounts for those things exist on Twitter), it's reasonable to expect to make that explicit
#
aaronpk
i agree the policy is poorly written. but that's also a criticism of how this stuff works :)
#
[tantek]
right, hence a criticism of the Mastodon, "you're at the whims of the admin" model
#
aaronpk
not only that, but you're at the whims of amateurs writing legal policies 😂
#
[tantek]
is posting events that you're going to or putting on considered spam/advertising? especially if there's a paid entry fee?
#
[tantek]
How about an event that you’re a part of? E.g. speaking/DJing at?
#
[tantek]
lots of "casual" conversations (as happens in /note posts) *could* be considered some form of "advertising" depending on the whims of the reader
