Just generated the first draft of this week's newsletter! https://indieweb.org/this-week/2024-03-08.html I'll generate a draft again tomorrow, so please add to it before then! https://indieweb.org/this-week#How_to

#

The p-summary part is for Loqi to answer "who is" when using the infobox, https://indieweb.org/Template:Infobox_person#Blank_Template
#
gRegor
bc pages get h-entry automatically, so the infobox h-card is nested. It's hacky but it brings the summary "up" to the h-entry
#
[tantek]
it doesn't work, see the newsletter draft
#
[tantek]
it spews a bunch of CSS code
#
gRegor
That's something with the updated wiki theme

Shrug, not sure where the CSS comes from
#
[tantek]
anyway, not worth polluting the newsletter, and no time to dig into why it's happening so chose the shortest path to avoiding noise

IWC Brighton folks! please feel free to share photos (upload to wiki) as you take them!
#

or upload to the event page which is easier!

#
[tantek]
aaronpk, hmm, do we want all the photos to go into the newsletter?
#
[tantek]
[Paul_Robert_Ll] any group photos from the pre-camp socializing today?
#
[tantek]
Those would be worth uploading to the wiki
#
[tantek]
since that predates the Camp
#
aaronpk
if there are too many photos for the newsletter i can change how it prioritizes them fro the newsletter
#
aaronpk
tho i think it alreayd picks one photo from each even before it starts using photos from the same event
#
[tantek]
^ going to remember that 😆
#
[tantek]
[Paul_Robert_Ll] if you upload any photos from the pre-camp socializing, I will take care of creating an events.indieweb event page for the socializing in particular after the fact, and copy the photos there so they show up in today's newsletter!
#
[tantek]
We have no photos otherwise for this week's newsletter
#
[tantek]
[calumryan] you too ^
#
[tantek]
I realize it's already 8:30pm+ there in Brighton, but hopefully y'all took some photos and can at least spend the time to upload them. We can handle the various wiki/events gardening accordingly
#
[tantek]
Also if you lack such photos, consider this an excuse to go out *again* and make some photos happen. Perhaps capjamesg or [Ana_R] can lead the charge 😄
#
[tantek]
as the kids (used to?) say, do it for the 'gram
#
aaronpk
do it for the... web?
#
gRegor
quick, indieweb watercooler zoom so we can take a photo :)

#
[tantek]
btw I'm starting to get convinced that we need an "indieweb-meetup" channel specifically for folks at/before an event to freely chat about event-context things, without having to worry that they are stepping on other threads of conversation
#
[tantek]
e.g. coordinating with each other where to meetup, socialize, etc.
#
[tantek]
a channel where those at or participating in an event feel free to have relatively moderate/high traffic chatter about event things without worrying about "spamming" everyone else in the community (e.g. here in meta or main #indieweb)
#
[tantek]
like I'm find with event chatter here myself, but I could see how it there might be pressure to minimize chatter
#
[tantek]
fine* with
#
capjamesg
I agree.
#
capjamesg
It should be private and either in slack or discord.
#
capjamesg
(People may want to coordinate without their messages being available to people who are not attending the event.)
#
aaronpk
that's a separate level of concern, i think we need to solve the first level first
#
aaronpk
that is also only going to work if the event organizer shares the details and invites people to the channel before the event, which is a _whole thing_ and likely to run into mistakes or just be forgotten, not to mention the day-of exceptions that will always come up
#
capjamesg
Give people an invite link that lets them access the channel?
#
capjamesg
It would take some thought.
#
capjamesg
But in any case we shouldn’t assume that people are okay with joining a public channel for logistics pertaining to a private, in person event.
#
[tantek]
No keep it simple like other channels (including being logged so folks who are going but not online, e.g. on a plane, can check logs after the fact)
#
aaronpk
yeah, which assumes multiple things now. for one, everyone would have to be using the same chat app, which is not currently the case with the existing solution
#
[tantek]
if you need to say things off the record, we have #indieweb-chat for that
#
aaronpk
or like private messages
#
[tantek]
correct, 'everyone using the same chat app' is not acceptable
#
capjamesg
This is what I mean about so many ideas getting pushback here. This isn’t a particularly hospitable way of addressing a valid concern.
#
capjamesg
London Web Standards uses one Discord group. You can check everyone that is in there.
#
capjamesg
Perhaps we should ask others what arrangement would be optimal before making any decisions. But, I think we should have a separate event channel in the interim.
#
aaronpk
what i'm saying is that is something that needs to be run by _the organizer_ of the event, it is not something the community can set up and expect event organizers to use
#
capjamesg
No, but we can create best practices.
#
capjamesg
I guess I meant yes there. Not entirely sure 🙃
#
aaronpk
again what i am saying is the only way it works is if the event organizer makes a plan for it, so we don't know if it's a best practice until someone does that and reporst back, so whoever runs the next event can decide if they want to try it. there isn't anything we can do for them here
#
capjamesg
Agreed.
#
aaronpk
and in the mean time, there is emergent behavior in these chat channels that we _can_ solve
#
[tantek]
capjamesg also ideas != concerns. good to have pushback on ideas to filter down to more feasible / sustainable / values-consistent choices. not good to pushback on concerns

FWIW, pre-event chat already come up as concern and suggested might make a good session for tomorrow. Also, am learning on the job!
#
[tantek]
you're doing great [Paul_Robert_Ll]++
#
Loqi
[Paul_Robert_Ll] has 31 karma in this channel over the last year (42 in all channels)
#
capjamesg
Yes indeed!
#
[tantek]
and tomorrow you'll have [Jeremy_Keith] presumably in-person to ask any organizer related questions (even if he's officially co-organizing). don't be afraid to lean on his expertise 😄
#
[Paul_Robert_Ll]
We have a number of former organisers, including Joshi, so lots of experienced hands ☺
#
[tantek]
that's wonderful
#
capjamesg
Ooooh! Exciting!
#
[tantek]
did Joschi bring a whole crew from Nuremburg?
#
[Paul_Robert_Ll]
He did!
#
[tantek]
amazing!

Hasn't indieweb-chat usually worked OK for meetup chat like "hey I'm going over to this restaurant" etc.

#

i know that when i'm at an event i would rather check a channel that is only about the in-person event to not have to scroll back through a bunch of irrelevant off-topic chat
#
[tantek]
exactly that use-case aaronpk
[Fran] joined the channel
#
[tantek]
at least one other community I'm in has a "meetup" channel and there is nothing "special" about it (i.e. it is default logged so people can scrollback even if they've not been "in" the channel for a while)
#
gRegor
I recall some recent discussion about where to chat during virtual meetups too, so sounds great for that as well.
#
gRegor
logged seems easier, too. less confusion about not seeing chat history
#
aaronpk
ok bikeshedding channel names then?
#
aaronpk
what is discuss?
