[tantek] Glich started as Fog Creek, when it was Fog Creek’s only product after all of their other products had been spun out. Anil had been brought in to be CEO and Stewart Butterfield enabled the transfer of his (Tiny Speck’s game) domain for the former game and Fog Creek moved to the Glitch name.
#
[social]
There was a lot of spinning out and shifting roles and names for a stretch with the prior Fog Creek Software products.
#
[tantek]
seems like a lot more energy put into (re)naming than was helpful? maybe not a great example to follow

There was a lot of changing of business structures that were connected to the series of renaming with the the shift of Joel to Anil for Fog Creek and what Fog Creek was going to be with all of the products spun out or shut down.

[tantek]
sure, and what purpose did all those "changing of business structures" serve either? from the outside it looked like a whole lot of corporate faffing about for no particular objective goal other than some weird insiderisms
#
[tantek]
like if it wasn't for good faith assumptions about the people involved due to their largely positive reputations, that kind of faffing about corp structures and rebranding looks like a mix of money laundering and/or reputation laundering
#
[social]
Much of it was due to all the properties being spun out and what assets and people were tied to various products. Part of it was how Joel was tied into the various properties and changing his roles and participation.
#
[social]
Like a lot of start-ups that grow the focus is on the product and not the business models and legal tetherings. It happens a lot outside of the tech world as well.
#
[tantek]
organizational equivalent of spaghetti code?
#
[social]
That is apt!
#
[tantek]
this seems far worse than the "startup focus is on one product" problem
#
[social]
When I started my consulting company I quickly realized I didn’t want to grow it beyond me. But, the other part was things I was building and creating was going to get messy and getting a good business lawyer to get it set properly was going to be pricy.
#
[social]
I just want to focus on building things out (ideas, frameworks, products, etc.) and not the business part.

Don’t think it warrants a page at this time. Was just curious to see if existed. https://www.val.town/
