[tantek]I wonder if we should consider timeboxing dev-focused discussion and especially LLM/vibe-coding-focused discussion at HWC, as there has been quite a bit in the past few that I recall, and I have to admit, I have nearly zero interest, and some amount of actively growing disinterest personally (I don't see either as particularly specifically relevant to personal websites, more "web dev" in general).
[schmarty]i know i have been absent from most HWCs recently, but learning that there is a significant amount of vibe-coding talk makes me much less interested in joining.
[mattl]Yeah I’m just not interested in hearing about or talking about any LLM stuff or the output. There’s much more interesting and pressing stuff to talk about anyway too, especially in the context of homebrew websites.
gRegorWonder if someone might want to start up a meetup that could be focused on those topics, similar to how we have FrESH as its own thing now. Not that I'm enthused about promoting it as an official indieweb thing, but trying to be a bit open to it.
[mattl]Those things already exist and I don’t think we need to promote them or even acknowledge them. I don’t remember (but maybe they existed) IndieWeb events about blockchain, NFTs, cryptocurrencies, Web3, etc etc.
[tantek]3, [artlung]2 and sp1ff joined the channel
[tantek]3no there was a whole dweb / web3 series of meetups that tried to be about making the replacement for websites, or websites served on IPFS etc.
[mattl]Oh wow. Finally. Someone has done something about this! I get a lot of email for other people at one of my Gmail accounts. People have made Netflix accounts, signed up for new apartments, had their medical records and more sent to me without any verification of the address. Someone just used it to make a Protonmail account and there was a link at the bottom of the email “I didn’t make this account” which disables the account. I wish mo
capjamesg[schmarty] Of note, the extent to which vibe coding is part of the Europe HWCs is limited. Mark and I are increasingly aware of and proactive in ensuring that AI discussions don't take up much time relative to the length of a meeting.
capjamesgRegarding the AI channel, if we start it then we need people who are going to read it to moderate. That should definitely be a consideration in whether it is started or not.
capjamesgI am also cognisant of the extent to which AI discussions have become divisive in many creative spaces. Yesterday I saw a heated discussion arise from a misunderstanding about a single comment about the use of AI in another web Discord community.
capjamesgIf we are to create a space I want it to be positive rather than a place to point discussions that we don't want to read elsewhere. If that is the sentiment in the community, I am more in favour of generally discouraging discourse of AI here, other than when it applies directly to AI bots (i.e. how to block them, how to avoid disruption).
[tantek]3capjamesg, it's not even the divisiveness per se (although yes that can also be an issue), it's the "invading nearly every discussion" aspect which is starting to feeling somewhere between tiring and exhausting. I'm not sure how to mitigate that without discouraging people
[tantek]3I do think the discussion of personal website "defense" against LLM crawlers (or other bots / abuse) may be a good way to focus (even name) such a channel to divert those conversations there
[mattl]I want to help people defend themselves. I don’t think it’s possible to have a channel that does both. I wouldn’t want to be in a channel about LLMs.
