can a page on the wiki be a pure redirect to wikipedia? how do we handle that?
#
[tantek]
we have a bunch

what is BBS
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "BBS" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "BBS is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[tantek]
oh it's there, just Loqi is confused lol
#

^ [artlung] click that link to view MediaWiki source for how to make a pure wikipedia redirect
#

I think I also added instructions to /wikify for that too

looks like Loqi bug
#
[tantek]
yeah. My guess is that Loqi fails on the Wikipedia: redirect syntax and tries to access it as a path of http://indieweb.org instead of following the redirect as the wiki generates it , and thus encounters a 404 and reports that as we don't have a page

Loqi should answer those regardless of case, though the redirects can be handy if you prefer to link to the lowercase version

3 months until check https://indieweb.org/HSTS to see if there are any IndieWeb Examples (or any other substantial gardening / IndieWeb specific relevance) and if not, consider redirecting to Wikipedia instead

I wonder if plain text microsyntax brainstorming is appropriate for #indieweb main channel or is that borderline dev?
#
[tantek]
since the "audience" for microsyntax is anyone typing text into an input box with the intention of publishing it on a website
#
[tantek]
like literally the text as typed, not even interpreted/formatted like Markdown

the warning on /HSTS may be sufficiently helpful to keep the page, since there's nothing similar on the Wikipedia page, and HSTS is definitely a website footgun for webdevs and especially personal sites

gRegor
what is hsts
#
Loqi
HSTS (HTTP Strict Transport Security) is a way for a website to indicate that it should only be accessed over HTTPS. It is a security mechanism that may be used on a personal site to prevent Manipulator in the Middle (MITM) attacks, however please note the important warning since it is difficult to undo https://indieweb.org/HSTS
#
[tantek]
lol didn't realize that was the new backronym
#
gRegor
Same! I like it
#
gRegor
found it on MDN

Speaking of
#

ok, I added "https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Headers/Strict-Transport-Security" to the "See Also" section of /HSTS https://indieweb.org/wiki/index.php?diff=104388&oldid=104387
#
[tantek]
seems inaccurate. the entity in the middle could simply be monitoring, not manipulating
#
gRegor
snarfed.org has HSTS

Looks like Mark Dain wrote most of that page btw: https://indieweb.org/wiki/index.php?title=HSTS&diff=prev&oldid=42221 Not sure if/how we want to attribute that. I think the warning there is fine for now.

gRegor, one way to improve such seemingly "generic" pages is to remove "common" information that is otherwise summarized on the wikipedia page
#
[tantek]
improves the indieweb-specific signal among the generic noise
