[artlung]https://www.refern.app ~ oh wow. that shutdown notice for this pinterest-a-like is just painful lesson after painful lesson. sounds like it was too expensive to run, and it didn't plan for users using it for nsfw images - zero moderation plan is not good.
[social]Rule one when building a social platform with user generated content is NSFW content will show up and often very early (as in the first day and hours). Somehow this lesson from the early 2000s didn’t get learned.
[social]There really aught to be a list of lessons learned to go through that would greatly help avoid or mitigate problems that will likely be run into.
[social]In my past few years mentoring grad students and some of their projects I point out the issues they will likely run into and how to plan for them. The guidance sometimes gets ignored and the lessons learned become their lived memory. Other times they hit them and they have a plan in place that works or helps deal with the issues.
[social]It could be a book. It is part of what my Complexity / Social Lenses are for, but there many sub-set collections that can be created like a list of lessons learned as starters.
LoqiWeird Web October is a 31 day challenge to make a website every day in October according to the theme of the day, inspired by Inktober, and open to anyone to participate by posting about their new sites with the hashtag #weirdweboctober https://indieweb.org/Weird_Web_October
LoqiOctober is the 10th month of the Gregorian calendar year and a month of several blogging challenges such as Blogtober, Inktober, Mathober, Weird Web October, also a month where some sites display a seasonal Halloween theme, or may be in reference to October CMS https://indieweb.org/October
LoqiIt looks like we don't have a page for "external content" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "external content is ____", a sentence describing the term)
[Al_Abut][gRegorLove] true, but calling reels “short form vertical video that’s different from stories because they have permalinks and don’t expire” is a bit of a mouthful :)
gRegorAlso yes, interesting that the vertical orientation is one of the main differentiators. Even on TikTok I think you can do up to 10 minutes now, so it's not just the length that makes it different from a YouTube
LoqiA highlight is a reaction post of a range of content that consists typically of just a restyling (like a yellow background as you might use a yellow physical highlighter, or an underline) https://indieweb.org/highlight
LoqiA story is a singular (one per profile) time stream collection post, that consists of ephemeral photo and video posts that are shown in sequence one at a time and disappear from the collection some time after being added, usually 24 hours https://indieweb.org/story
[Al_Abut]ah, I mentioned that I thought you’re a TikTok this morning to [capjamesg] when we were looking at [artlung]‘s new /reels page, been meaning to ask you about it and will remember for the next coffee zoom
gRegorWatcher of, yeah. Have only very briefly thought about putting myself out there. Would want an indie-first approach if I did, though, which is part of why I haven't haha
[Al_Abut]I definitely want to add more video to my site, whether vertical or not. I experimented with a draft blog post last year to see how onerous adding a <video> element would be:
LoqiIt looks like we don't have a page for "featurette" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "featurette is ____", a sentence describing the term)
[Al_Abut]Well, I guess they’re short and also vertical, but that’s a limitation of the mobile-first social media sites that use them. Part of why I got excited this weekend to copy Joe and add a dedicated /video section to my site was to break out of vertical and post horizontal stuff
[Al_Abut]It’s not the driving factor, vertical has a lot of positives that I’ve learned to embrace (looks immersive on mobile without looking bad on desktop, whereas the horizontal videos are microscopic on mobile)
