[tantek][artlung] /reply/quote and /quoting are all different /response types but different enough in both meaning and presentation that you can't really collapse them
[artlung]I wanted the category. Could be “digital sociology” too. Something to encompass the old, current and future of person interactions and sorts of replies and conversations [tantek]
Loqiresponses, or interactions, in the context of the indieweb, refer to all the different ways and things people explicitly do to and with others’s posts, from written replies to quick likes, in other words responses = replies + reactions https://indieweb.org/interactions
[tantek]a category makes sense to more easily cross-link/discover such pages. is it a synonym for that interactions? I'm trying to understand the need to introduce a new term. it feels a bit jargony, like "social media" which obviously eventually became a pop-culture term
[tantek]"digital sociology" I understand even less tbh. like is it a subset of the formal field of "sociology"? is it conducting/studying "sociology" purely in digital form?
[tantek]I mean yeah if there's a prior reference to a phrase like that in the news media that overlaps indieweb then we should have a page on it to connect the dots
[tantek]Hard for me to take "social" phrases seriously because "social media" has kind of ruined the category unfortunately because it seems to amplify anti-social behavior more than actual social behavior
[social]Other people misusing and overusing terms doesn’t mean they are wrong or not incredibly helpful. There is always a cycle when a term hits popularity and it starts getting misused and used for everything. But, over time that erosion of meaning has people stop using the term and it becomes helpful again. Things are a bit better in academic circles. I’ve watched nearly everything around in web and digital systems go through this.
[social]Jyri Engstron’s creation of “social object” as an easier to access term than socially mediated objects that Karin Knorr Cetina initially used. Having that term make getting the focus and use far easier to get right. As the term’s use grew it made it a mess to use it thanks to people who didn’t understand the term and continually misused it. I’ve worked with a few groups who missed the mess part of the cycle for the ter
[artlung]It's not about the term for me, it's about the grouping. About having a useful bucket. I wish I'd had that category when we had our popup on culture of indieweb. As a lookup.
[tantek][artlung]++ to be clear, something is better than nothing, especially when it comes to discovery and navigability. a working term/phrase for something is better than none. ultimately we'll see how the terms/phrases are used and can iterate based on experience.
[artlung]Funny you edit POSE [tantek] ~ I briefly considered creating a {{historical}} banner for pages. Similar in concept to how {{stub}} is used maybe. A banner to set the context. I see some pages kept around e.g. https://indieweb.org/Getting_Started_Historical
[tantek]obv that's a very specialized banner that does more than you need for that use-case. I thought the "information blue" design language could be helpful to re-use
[tantek]Wikipedia has subcategories of stubs. Up to us whether or not we would find value in any of that (compared to the labor necessary to "get it right enough")
