GWGWondering what people think of the idea of including tools used in the UX and design principle (#7). I think we have focused too much on what we used to build things over what we built and want to clarify what I see as the intent of the principle. I like a good plumbing conversation as much as anyone.. but it is pivoting us away from the experience
[capjamesg]GWG I too much prefer UX/design discussions but I don’t think we should say that design is more important than tools used. There are reasonable ethical, social, and environmental objections to AI tools right now, for example, that I think we would be ascribing a lower importance if we said “UX and design is more important than protocols, formats, data models, schema, tools used, etc.”
[capjamesg]I understand we definitely don’t want discussions to be dominated by developer chat, but I don’t think this policy will help with that. Rather, I think it would make people feel less comfortable when they feel it is appropriate to voice a concern about a tool that may be used in the community.
GWGI think more important doesn't mean not important at all... but where do you think is a good place to address this as a principle without removing a legitimate discussion about concerns about using things?
[social]It is tough as IndieWeb is quite diverse with interests and capabilities. Having balance is good, but also having pockets where people who want to go deeper is good as well.
[capjamesg]That’s a good point. I think for HWC, if a discussion comes up enough, we might want to intervene and say “hey, we notice this has been coming up a lot lately, maybe you’d like to run a pop up on it?”
[tantek]agreed to direct folks who want to go deep on a specific tool (AI or otherwise) to consider proposing, hosting a pop-up on that tool (or approach)
[capjamesg]I don’t think updating our principles is the way to do it. I think we should issue that guidance to HWC facilitators for them to adopt as they feel appropriate.
tantek.comedited /AI_policy (+1464) "/* Brainstorming */ add thoughts on AI-policy guidance for HWC in particular, problem statement and possible solution" (view diff)
[artlung]An HWC ought to be relevant and substantive to the folks participating in it. Specific topic rules are unlikely to fit every meeting. But I am in favor of moderators managing conversation flow to try to hit that goal. It's what I do, and doing so without hurting feelings, ideally, but not always.
