Does anyone know if Google supports Microformats 2 yet? Doing a quick test of an address I don't see their structured data test tool extracting it.
tealmage joined the channel
#
tantek
Garbee - not yet as far as we known. They've mentioned interest in parsing it, but we don't know of any actual implementation being deployed yet.
#
tantek
They're probably waiting for a 1000s of us to deploy it first, as they did with hRecipe, hAtom, hMedia :)
#
Garbee
Ah ok.
#
Garbee
I'll start using that then.
#
tantek
right now there's a critical mass of #indiewebcamp folks deploying microformats2 support on their own blogs
#
Garbee
tantek, I saw your talk on Youtube about structured data, won me over on Microformats.

Oh, also has it been considered for the h-addr to have a "send-to" or "address-to" field? In case an address specified is to be shipped specifically to a person/company unit.

Also I see " profile/itemtype: http://microformats.org/profile/h-card " in the information on the different formats. If I go to that URL though it gives a 404. What is the purpose of the URL then?
#
tantek
Garbee - it's for "linked data" uses - which is rarely used, but we provided it in case folks that are doing linked data want it.
#
Garbee
Ok I'll encourage a few others I know who do sites to integrate microformats if possible. Hopefully getting it used more will get search engines parsing it. ;)
#
Garbee
Thanks for your time and the info tantek!
#
tantek
awesome. when you do - feel free to add to the respective *-examples-in-wild wiki pages

Yea, I need to dig around the wiki a bit, see if I can't help out in there. ;)

Is there already a test parser for MicroFormats2? Something we can test markup against to make sure it is parsed correctly. Or is that a cool project to be done?
#
tantek
there is!
#
tantek
several actually
#
Garbee
May want to link to them under: http://microformats.org/code-tools : unless I am missing something there already.
#
tantek
yes, /code-tools needs an update for sure
#
Garbee
and *wow* this seems like getting too granular to me: http://gmpg.org/xfn/creator
#
Garbee
Like really, do people need to know through a link if you actually met someone?
#
tantek
XFN was big when blogrolls were bigt
#
tantek
Garbee - rel-met was actually quite handy for creating networks of claims of physical existence
#
tantek
easier to spot sites based on "real people"
#
Garbee
Yea, I guess it is a more limited use-case then I tend to think in.
#
tantek
it was more of a big deal when there were ghost blogs being written in the early 2000s, some of them a bit abusive (like fake cancer patients asking for donations)
#
tantek
less of a big deal today
#
tantek
however, rel=met is still handy in blog posts for timestamping *when* you met someone
#
tantek
like go to a conference, meet a bunch of people, blog that you met them
#
Garbee
sees Google using that to create a custom timeline... I like it.
#
Garbee
Google Glass gets that much more powerful!
#
tantek
right - it's also a way to create an #indiewebcamp timeline for your personal site, without depending on a big company to do so.
#
Garbee
On the "Code & Tools" page... That could simply be a link to a page in the wiki so that as people create things they can add it themselves. Keeping it up-to-date automatically with cool stuff.
#
tantek
very true
#
tantek
so this is good for testing a URL to see what microformats are found: http://microformat2-node.jit.su/
#
tantek
and this is good for quickly checking snippets of markup: http://waterpigs.co.uk/php-mf2/

#
Garbee
imho, Wiki page the Code & Tools. Easier maintenance since you aren't needing to manually update it and it puts more focus on the wiki/community effort.
#
tantek
you're totally right - really we should do that with all the top level static pages on the site
#
Garbee
Yup, and link to them within the wiki UI itself.
#
Garbee
I notice the wiki only has like 3 of the top-level links there.
#
tantek
alright let's see if I can get something started
#
Garbee
I can make a Code & Tools page if you want.
#
Garbee
Copy in the stuff from the current page and add stuff from the other link you gave.
#
Garbee
Perhaps even test them out and give a brief statement on tool usage to help people looking through out.
#
tantek
created /code-tools (+91) "stub"
(view diff)
#
tantek
that would be great
#
tantek
just created a stub - go for it!
#
tantek
and we can reprioritize current vs. past tools
#
tantek
update the contents a bit
#
tantek
let me know when you think it's a good replacement, and I'll simply add a redirect from /code-tools to /wiki/code-tools
#
Garbee
And we could also mark things some way ("Legacy" perhaps?) for things targeted towards MicroFormats and everything else would be MicroFormats 2 focused.
#
tantek
makes sense
#
Garbee
Ok, Let's see what I can come up with while I'm still at the store...

I think "code & tools" helps with search discoverability
#
tantek
some folks search for one when they mean the other
#
tantek
and all the tools are open source code as well - people like them as starting points

Garbee
That makes sense.

#
Garbee
Once I add in another reminder. ;) Won't be able to test every tool while I'm here, so I'll use the top part of the page as notes for where things are coming from for now.
#
tantek
more important than having "every tool" is to pick out the most useful tools and put them at the top.

And yes, for validators and other tools I would *like* to have a line or two describing what the tool does. That way people aren't blindly following a link. Code generators should be pretty self-explanatory...
#
tantek
a quick one-line description sounds sensible/helpful
