hi
#
Harzilein
i'm creating hcards for business contacts and the like and wonder how to mark up opening hours. there's goodrelations, but that's quite separate from hcard, having its own vcard representation etc.

lo
#
Pnky
whats the microformat tag for an email adress? I can't find it anywhere. Is there an overview of all tags anywhere?
#
Harzilein
Pnky: do you mean for hcards?
#
Pnky
yeah. Just found the properties page, thx
#
Pnky
does it matter, if I use a <a ... tag instead of a <span class="email" ?
#
Harzilein
Pnky: i think it's valid, at least there is a non-normative example for it. i'd have to read the standard myself for the normative wording though.
#
Pnky
allright. I think <a will work as well
#
Harzilein
"If an <a> element is used for one or more properties, it MUST be treated as follows: 1. For the 'photo' property and any other property that takes a URL as its value, the href="..." attribute provides the property value. 2. For other properties, the element's content is the value of the property."
#
Pnky
ah, okay. so a is okay
#
Pnky
one other question is left: when I add a <span class="fn org"> but want it to be designed as a <h2> tag, will I need to insert the <h2> before the span or can I insert it in it?
#
barnabywalters
greetings Pnky!
#
Pnky

#
barnabywalters
in microformats vocabularies, it’s typically the classnames on an element, rather than the element itself, which define what properties are
#
barnabywalters
so <span class=“email”>barnaby@waterpigs.co.uk</span> is valid
#
barnabywalters
as is <a class=“email” href=“mailto:barnaby@waterpigs.co.uk”>email me!</a>
#
Pnky
what about: <span class=“email”><h2>barnaby@waterpigs.co.uk</2></span> Does that mean your mail adress is <h2>...</h2> ? Or will google notice the difference?
#
barnabywalters
for your other example, <h2 class=“fn org”>Organisation Name</h2> is absolutely fine
#
Pnky
ah great
#
barnabywalters
Pnky: there’s a microformats sandbox here which you can use to see how any given markup is parsed: http://waterpigs.co.uk/php-mf2/
#
barnabywalters
it’s really a microformats2 parser but has some support for classic microformats
#
Pnky
bookmarked. great, thx
#
barnabywalters
I would also recommend looking into microformats2, a new and improved evoultion of classic microformats

Pnky
looks a little bit confusing. Will google still accept microformats2?
#
barnabywalters
Pnky: as far as we know google doesn’t yet parse microformats2, but there are a growing number of sites which do
#
barnabywalters
Pnky: I’d be interested to know what looks confusing
#
Pnky
after reading a bit further, it doesn't look confusing any more but simple. I missed the class="email" tag, in order to tell google what is meant. But as I read, exaclty this is microformats2
#
Pnky
but as google does not parse it atm, I think I will remain on using microformats
#
Pnky
any chance to get a tag for opening hours?
#
barnabywalters
Pnky: there isn’t one at the moment, but there’s some research and brainstorming about it: http://microformats.org/wiki/opening-hours http://indiewebcamp.com/venue
#
barnabywalters
Pnky: what opening hours do you want to publish, and how do you want consumers to use them?
#
barnabywalters
if you’re already publishing opening hours, it’d be great if you could add a link and brief summary of them to http://microformats.org/wiki/opening-hours-examples
#
Pnky
I am currently doing a website for a cleaning agency. I am just adding the office opening hours from Mon to Fri
