ok tantek: more complicated schema/microdata! https://www.w3.org/wiki/WebSchemas/InverseProperties
#
tantek
indeed!
#
barnabywalters
microformats seems to have organically solved that problem via naming conventions — i.e. p-comment <-> u-in-reply-to, p-like <-> p-like-of
#
KartikPrabhu
barnabywalters: agreed!
#
KartikPrabhu
also so mcuh easier to read than "itemprop" stuff
#
tantek
oh yeah, InverseProperties is an academic thing
#
tantek
in practice, YAGNI
#
barnabywalters
InverseProperties also assumes that things are not messy
#
barnabywalters
which is generally incorrect
#
KartikPrabhu
that seems to be an assumption of most schema/rdfa/microdata
#
barnabywalters
i.e. a p-comment might be a like or a repost or a reply
#
barnabywalters
it’s not only things with in-reply-to which can be shown as comments
#
KartikPrabhu
it seems to me that rdfa/microdata are aiming to be a very broad and general data markup. It seems overkill for webpages but are they used anywhere else where such complexity might be useful?
#
KartikPrabhu
for instance RDF can represent arbitrary graphs (not just tree) of data nodes, but does anyone need to do that?
#
barnabywalters
well microdata is tied to HTML5 syntax
#
barnabywalters
RDF is more of a concept than a format
#
barnabywalters
i.e. RDF data can be expressed in many different formats
#
KartikPrabhu
I see. but apart from webpages (which I don't need all that jazz) are they used anywhere else? Like some XML data files or somethign
#
barnabywalters
KartikPrabhu: presumably, but off the top of my head I can’t name one
#
barnabywalters
I’m not really in that world
#
KartikPrabhu
neither am I, which is why I am confused as to why people want all these complicated things...
#
barnabywalters
KartikPrabhu: complexity can be extremely attractive
#
barnabywalters
I went through a phase of using really complex software tools because it made me feel like I was a “proper developer”
#
KartikPrabhu
yeah... i see what you mean. I am having an email exchange with someone who might know. Maybe a blogpost will follow.
#
tantek
barnabywalters: haha - yeah, that's a typical phase :)
#
Loqi
nice
#
tantek
KartikPrabhu: people want complicated things because sometimes they don't know better (simplicity is hard), and sometimes they're complexity hobbyists (AKA academics)
#
KartikPrabhu
tantek: everytime you say 'academics' I feel I should get offended but I don't :P
#
tantek
PhD's are a driver of artificial complexity.
#
KartikPrabhu
boooo! :)
#
tantek
in practice ;)
#
KartikPrabhu
:D No I totally understand what you mean...

aside, KartikPrabhu "Serendipitous Web Applications" is the funniest phrase I have seen this morning.
