Zegnat, yes thanks for the Powazek reminder. Always a good reference.

Here's the hilarious thing, see the respectable (and respected) Danny Sullivan response on Search Engine Land: http://searchengineland.com/an-open-letter-to-derek-powazek-on-the-value-of-seo-27680
#
tantek
and I'm just going to quote some of the advice that he gave "... she probably needs to kick them out into Google Base, in order to fully be listed in Google."
#
tantek
if you don't remember Google Base, then I encourage you to look it up. SEO nonsense doesn't age well.

Heh "perhaps some catchy link bait, which may pull in the links she needs to rank better (which, by the way, is a recommended Google practice)."
#
aaronpk
that whole second story is demonstrating derek's point exactly. hire good web developers to make good websites.
#
tantek
indeed

Danny is a good guy. We should pitch him to talk indieweb at the next smx
#
tantek
kevinmarks, then there was that whole Google Base advocacy in his dated defense of SEO
#
tantek
prime example of the problem with SEO
#
tantek
even so called "good SEO"
#
tantek
it's all short term fixes
#
tantek
or rather, any SEO "magic" beyond just "build a good website" is all short term
#
tantek
and yes I've met Danny and he's a fine fellow. no personal issues with him. just have a problem with the flawed SEO methodologies that are pitched / sold as worth paying for.
#
tantek
kevinmarks, maybe start by pitching him mf2
#
tantek
and feel free to make the claim that search engines will inevitably support it, so when they flip it on, the sites that are ready with it will get the biggest boosts!
#
aaronpk
from what I can tell, SEO people have no interest in mf2 because search engines aren't indexing it, and microformats "lost" the search engine game with mf1
#
tantek
they forget they recommended Google Base (same time as mf1) which was what actually lost
#
aaronpk
I don't think any good will come from pitching mf2 to SEO people, since they are essentially on the tailing end of the search engine game
#
tantek
plenty of mf1 still out there which is still indexed
#
tantek
aaronpk, yeah, to SEO people in general I agree
#
aaronpk
SEO people will recommend things that search engines index
#
aaronpk
search engines will index things that exist on the web
#
tantek
could be an interesting dialog with Danny in particular
#
[kevinmarks]
SMX is the SEO conference Danny runs.
#
tantek
I would be doing a lot of SMH at SMX
#
[kevinmarks]
It would be a good place to talk webmention when we want it stress tested for spam
#
tantek
hah true that!
#
tantek
whoever does that talk should have Vouch all dialed in on their own personal site first :P
#
aaronpk
what's the recommended way to include vendor-specific properties in an h-entry?
#
tantek
looks up mf2 faq
#
tantek
aaronpk, needs more formal write-up, however: http://microformats.org/wiki/microformats2#VENDOR_EXTENSIONS
#
aaronpk
lol VENDOR EXTENSIONS
#
tantek
laugh++
#
Loqi
laugh has 1 karma
#
Loqi
microformats2 FAQ
#
tantek
literally the text "vendor-specific" is in the mf2 FAQ :P
#
tantek
wonders if we should just declare a canonical vendor prefix of -schema-
#
tantek
and just immediately enable everyone to use schema vocabs in microformats as a vendor extension
#
aaronpk
make a big press release out of it
#
tantek
is thinking up more April 1 ideas
#
aaronpk
that sounds like a great press release for april 1
#
tantek
"microformats adopts schema"
#
tantek
better: "microformats embraces and extends schema"
#
tantek
might as well go over the top
#
tantek
where's kevinmarks, I wonder if he wants to get in on this
#
tantek
since he's in the UK, we could kick it off on 2017-04-01 BST
#
aaronpk
alright i'm adding "p-swarm-coins" to h-entry
#
tantek
catch a few folks off guard on Friday the 31st afternoon here in PDT
#
tantek
lol nice
#
tantek
oh man, this means we can start a vendor prefix registry wiki too
#
[kevinmarks]
I did that already remember
#
tantek
kevinmarks, you did a prototype/proposal as a blog post
#
aaronpk
[kevinmarks]: gotta do it like a big news thing instead of an attempt at a neutral comparison
#
tantek
this would be a "formal" followup as spec
#
tantek
yeah exactly
#
[kevinmarks]
-schema- prefix
#
tantek
kevinmarks, your blog post was too literal :)
#
[kevinmarks]
Would need to relax the camel case exception
#
aaronpk
just make a transformation that converts camelCase to camel-case, like how javascript does it
#
[kevinmarks]
Do we mung ld into mf2?
#
tantek
kevinmarks, there's a w3c wiki page on that already if you want to work on that
#
tantek
I think elf started it comparing AS2 JSONLD to mf2 h-entry
#
[kevinmarks]
At one point the as2 had mf2 examples
#
tantek
aaronpk - when is your -swarm- going live?
#
aaronpk
hopefully toda
#
aaronpk
along with a consumer of it :)
#
tantek
well then you can update this when you do: http://microformats.org/wiki/vendor-prefixes
#
Loqi
vendor-prefixes
#
tantek
and move it from proposed to examples in the wild
