and everyone who first starts with microformats incorrectly puts u-photo on everything and you see...the other one I see often is "u-author h-card"

Reposting from #indieweb:

I'm looking at making my h-feed better as for some post types it just has the URL and name
#
jamietanna[m]
However I'm wondering how to do this with long posts ie >500 words, with code snippets, pictures
#
jamietanna[m]
Would you recommend having the HTML present but hidden, or shown in full?
#
[jgmac1106]
You can include a p-summary some readers treat that like an excerpt, in what reader and with what post? Also note only few post types truly agreed upon: https://indieweb.org/posts#Kinds_of_Posts
#
[jgmac1106]
as long as your HTML comes out looking like those in the first group you are fine.
#
[jgmac1106]
have you run them through a parser yourself>
#
[jgmac1106]
that always helps me diagnose stuff
#
[jgmac1106]
Who is jaimetanna?
#
[jgmac1106]
what's your url?
#
[jgmac1106]
forgot no Loqi here
#
[jgmac1106]
@ jaimetanna choose from here https://indieweb.org/tools#Microformats_Parsers throw in your post types and look to see what doesn't fit the pattern of that first group of posts
#
[jgmac1106]
and not connected to microformats you could make a read more button out of CSS, a lot of discussion around truncating in the #dev channels always
#
[jgmac1106]
but often the reader controls how your posts are displayed best you can do is provide good semantic HTML (and then run through Granary for the xml for rss readers)

I've got `p-summary` in some things, but not all
#
jamietanna[m]
Yeah I'm just wondering how much detail I put into my h-feed, as most entries are just a URL and a title, not the full content to a reader, so the user may then need to click through to read it, instead of it all being in the reader
#
[jgmac1106]
here is mine but it's probably wrong: https://jgregorymcverry.com/articles.html
#
[jgmac1106]
I don't actually see an h-feed before your first h-entry
#
jamietanna[m]
Ah I've got the whole container as a h-feed
#
jamietanna[m]
Including the h-card above the post listings
#
jamietanna[m]
Thanks, that's good to see how you've done yours
#
[jgmac1106]
I see you talk about including an h-feed, nvm found it, but it is followed by your h-card
#
[jgmac1106]
but not p-name for the h-feed
#
[jgmac1106]
it is an optional property
#
[jgmac1106]
ha ha I figured it out
#
[jgmac1106]
in the link you posted above "is" was attached so I thought nothing was parsing as it came out blank
#
[jgmac1106]
and you have a p-name set to feed
#
[jgmac1106]
maybe what you are thinking about is not your h-feed but what am I displaying on my front page, don't think there is a microformats issue at all
#
jamietanna[m]
Looking at https://php.microformats.io/?url=https://tantek.com Tantek has the full post content in both the browser-rendered HTML and the MF2 HTML
#
[jgmac1106]
I believe he splits those into multiple h-feeds on his page
#
[jgmac1106]
if you are going to have mainly short microposts I could see truncating articles for visual continuity, I keep some posts off my homepage
#
[jgmac1106]
meaning I still posts food and drinks but I do no display those unless you go to that page
#
jamietanna[m]
ah maybe then
#
jamietanna[m]
Yeah I have the issue that a fair few of my posts are long and I don't want them all over my home page
#
jamietanna[m]
truncating is a good shout

[tantek]
start simple, mark it all up
#
[tantek]
and consider using CSS to truncate the presentation rather than actually truncating the content (that's more work)
#
[tantek]
do less work first in general 🙂
#
jamietanna[m]
That sounds like a plan, I'll see if I can get that up tonight :)

also this sounds like a good discussion for the IndieWeb dev channel, techniques etc. especially on indieweb.org/article and /note pages as well as possible indieweb.org/composite_stream for how to present lengthy content in a stream
