have there been discussion for a discovery/follow microformat? Something like u-follow
#
corlaez
The idea being that my homepage won't contain every feed, but could like to other pages with more feeds.
#
[snarfed]
yup, u-follow-of experimentally, https://indieweb.org/follow
#
[snarfed]
although that's more for eg "snarfed followed corlaez" type posts. sounds like you're thinking more of https://indieweb.org/blogroll

There's also rel="feed". I know at least Bridgy uses that. I link to my notes feed from my homepage that way.
#
gRegor
I think rel-feed is preferable when linking to other feeds, vs. an alternate of the current page
#
gRegor
Hm, superceded apparently? TIL https://indieweb.org/rel-feed

basically i find mf2 to "feel" more "HTML-native" than RDF-based approaches (RDFa/Microdata/JSON-LD), which makes it less powerful but more comfy. i think it's a worthwhile good tradeoff.

corlaez
those sound relevant, thanks for the info!
#
corlaez
https://indieweb.org/rel-feed sounds like exactly what I want. https://indieweb.org/rel-alternate description doesn't seem to match my use case but rel-feed says that it has been superseded by alternate
#
corlaez
So despite the name rel alternate can be used to point to my other feeds is what I assume

uhm rel alternate doesn't seem to be what I need. I can use alternate for my i18n pages but not for the discovery I want.
#
corlaez
is blog roll just linking to other blogs (from other people)? If so that's dead simple and neat and very similar to what I need
#
corlaez
except what I want to add is a microformat that will discover other feeds that are mine
#
corlaez
as in if someone refers to my homepage they will not only see the h-feed that is there, but in all other urls that get discovered.
#
corlaez
and ideally when subscribing you choose which feeds are more relevant to you
#
corlaez
or should I dump all my feeds into one and that filtering can be achieved via categories?
#
corlaez
I guess part of my confussion is the lack of direct expirience with indiesub
#
corlaez
is there an auto contained client? So far I get there is a server and a client... and i can use say Aperture... but is there a simpler way to do it such as an RSS client that is just the client fetching a page without a middleman?

Ah, the ever-present question of whether to mention microformats in content about semantics.

I wonder what a good way to reach out to that would be
#
[tantek]4
corlaez, regarding details of readers/servers/clients, that's better discussed in #indieweb-dev
#
corlaez
sure will do
#
[Murray]1
[tantek] that is in response to the conversation we have been having here over the past few days re: microformats and CSS. Ben is one of the people that brought it up originally 😄 it's all getting a bit intertwined; I think that tweet was in response to them seeing me linking their article in #indieweb-dev 😅

I share some of the confusion with rel-alternate, corlaez. Strictly speaking I think it's only supposed to link an alternate of the current page. In practice I think it's fairly common to link to multiple different feeds on the homepage that are not alternates of the current page. Feed readers support it just fine, showing multiple options to subscribe to.
#
gRegor
E.g. I think WordPress sites by default have rel-alternates for the main posts feed and a comments feed
#
corlaez
thanks gRegor, yeah that's definitly what the wiki suggested but appreciate the confirmation. And I agree alternate for extra feeds doesnt sound right
#
gRegor
In practice it's not being verified by readers or other consumers, so it's really about what UX you want when people enter example.com in a subscribe box.
#
gRegor
* verified that it's an alternate of the URL
#
corlaez
yeah I wouldn't expect anyone to validate how equivalent the alternates are, but it is just the semantics that seem wrong

Hm, we should probably include <link> examples on https://microformats.org/wiki/rel-me
