melvster tl;dr it's a centralization vs decentralization argument ... should the web be like a piece of paper that anything can be written on ... or should the paper (ie the web page) be tightly coupled to the the data ... the 2nd argument has been lobbied for, and the web has become more centralized as a result, but the original design of the web is of modularity and loose coupling
