tantek, looks fine, Sandro has sent the request
#
tantek
thanks rhiaro appreciate the confirmation!
#
tantek
I understand from various process timing aspects we are expecting next Tuesday

good day my heroes and heroins !
#

I'm reading up more about OpenID Connect this morning
#
strk
and I found out that "discovery" spec fully relies on Webfinger
#
strk
which on itself relies in having control of the domain name
#
strk
or am I wrong ?
#
strk
(as that'd be a step backward from OpenID-2.0 [now deprecated] to the new OpenID-Connect [superceeding that])
#
strk
and let me know if this is not the right channel to discuss this (I'm assuming Webfinger comes from here)

strk: OpenID connect is not being developed by this group
#
strk
aaronpk: yes I know, but webfinger is ?
#
aaronpk
I think webfinger was always a community project?
#
strk
I came for webfinger, to ask about how to remove (if possible) the limitations
#
strk
I'm new to webfinger too, just found out about 1 year ago or so... (when trying to understand the zillion protocols in Friendica)
#
strk
as now I also see webfinger used in OpenID, I'm guessing it won't go away any soon, so might as well research more about it
#
aaronpk
This group made a decision a couple years ago explicitly to use a "follow your nose" approach to specs, which is very different from webfinger which relies on hardcoded path names
#
aaronpk
I didn't actually realize OpenID connect uses Webfinger. I thought it just used the .well-known path for discovery
#
strk
OpenID-Connect Discovery, in particular, is using Webfinger for the discovery
#
strk
"OpenID Connect uses WebFinger [RFC7033] to locate the OpenID Provider for an End-User."
#
strk
ok, I understand you're not responsible for WebFinger, thanks for the info

lol, thats kind of silly. 'inter-operable without using standard protocols' uhh, that agreement method IS a protocol

I have no idea how any of that works.

hmmm, so, it seems to align a bit with my hypermedia ideas, but shipping a lot of code rather than descriptions seem rather hazardous to me

#
tantek
welcome KjetilK! What is the "it" you are referring to? Not sure what you mean by "shipping a lot of code rather than descriptions", and what hazards?
#
KjetilK
hi tantek! "it" wa the protofly that csarven posted
#
tantek
ah ok
#
tantek
yes that seems like a bit of an uphill proposal
#
KjetilK
so, I wasn't referring to any of your work :-)
#
tantek
I just left this comment on the proposed community group:
#
tantek
"Hi Paulo, some of the goals stated for this community group sound very similar to the current Social Web Working Group (https://www.w3.org/wiki/Socialwg) and in particular the Social Web Incubator Community Group (https://www.w3.org/community/swicg/) you may want to join that instead of starting a new group as there's already a lot of folks there interested in a variety of approaches to solving decentralized communications. Also stop by the #social IRC c[CUT]
#
tantek
irc.w3.org and say hi."
#
tantek
but it is "Your comment is awaiting moderation."
#
KjetilK
right
#
tantek
I wonder how long it will take to get moderated, and by whom
#
tantek
I really look forward to avoiding the need for comment moderation in 99% of use-cases
#
tantek
comment moderation disincentivizes conversation
#
KjetilK
nods
#
tantek
KjetilK: do you have your own website?
#
KjetilK
tantek, yeah: http://kjetil.kjernsmo.net/
#
KjetilK
with relevant material :-)
#
tantek
reads :)
#
KjetilK
I'm trying to figure out a way to work in this space
#
KjetilK
possibly a startup, but I'm also looking at research positions
#
tantek
nice recent blog post!
#
KjetilK
thanks!
#
tantek
keeps reading
#
tantek
really agree with a lot of your problem statements
#
KjetilK
good :-)
#
tantek
gosh that reminds me that https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_software_and_protocols_for_distributed_social_networking is badly out of date and needs a massive update (so many dead projects :( )
#
tantek
oh hey we should publish an update to https://www.w3.org/TR/social-web-protocols/ - thanks for the reminder

[Amy Guy] Social Web Protocols
#
KjetilK
yeah, it is a horrifying graveyard... :-(
#
tantek
I think a lot of that has demonstrated that we needed simpler social web standards, and thus the work of this working group (which is still in the new / emerging state in many ways)
#
KjetilK
indeed
#
tantek
many early attempts were too complicated to either implement, or get right/complete, or be interoperable, or frankly, to be secure and privacy respecting!
#
KjetilK
I have lost track of all the various projects that are going on right now, and all the approaches
#
tantek
same same :)
#
tantek
I added an agenda item for our Tuesday telcon to discuss (and hopefully approve) an update to Social Web Protocols since we've made a bunch of progress since last November.
#
KjetilK
good :-)
#
tantek
KjetilK: there's a bunch of things you can do incrementally to contribute in this space (per your blog post)
#
tantek
from simple / cosmetic to coding / design
#
tantek
if you'd like, you can make your face appear next to your IRC nickname and link it to your website by adding yourself to https://www.w3.org/wiki/irc-people
#
KjetilK
yeah, I was hoping to find time to finish my LDN reciever, but there are so many things happening
#
tantek
well you're in the right place! :)
#
KjetilK
and we haven't got a JSON-LD implementation in Perl, so I should do that too...
#
tantek
cool. got to go for now. nice to meet you and keep it up with the well written blog posts!
