melody i'm just catching up too and i strongly prefer :blah: as a fallback for custom emoji, in a lot of, for instance, slack communities the words you use to insert the emoji are as important if not more important than the actual image, and the XMPP and IRC bridges, as well as the "disable emoji" setting all fall back to that, html isn't the best vehicle
