# Gargron i wanna once and for all clear up that "custom emoji" is not at all the same thing as "unicode emoji", i keep hearing things like "custom emoji should be encoded as unused unicode codepoints or combinations". custom emoji is not "smiling face", custom emoji is, for example, "Keepo", a face of a person named Kappa but with ears of a dota hero named Meepo. you can't encode that as general unicode and the text is meaningful by itself
