@iamEAP
↩️ Or perhaps just a few years. There is already a W3C recommendation for open, de-centralized social networking called ActivityPub: https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/#Overview It was developed over about 3 years and already has multiple implementations, notably @MastodonProject.

@PatrickGombert
↩️ @kellabyte Activity Stream is already a standard and adopted by mastodon https://www.w3.org/TR/activitystreams-core/

#
@missingfaktor
A few things I learned from replies to this thread: 1. Such a protocol already exists. https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/ 2. Mastodon and GNU Social comply with it. 3. There is an app coming soon which lets you not only own your data but also make money off it. Check out @twetchapp. [1/2]

@aconchillo
↩️ @martinkl I'm not familiar with it, but there's ActivityPub: https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/ May be @dustyweb has answers to that.

@motiakoron
ActivityPub https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/ W3C勧告もある中で独自にプロトコル規定したところで、果たして誰が追従するんだ?みたいのはみんな思ってるよね

@michbarsinai
↩️ @eladmeidar @idokius לא רק מסטודון, יש אפילו המלצה של W3C בשם activity pub: https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/

@siyantombela
Is @jack calling for what already exists? Read more on The ActivityPub protocol https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/

#
@brembs
↩️ @jack Are you ignoring the W3C Social Web Protocols (from 2017): https://www.w3.org/TR/social-web-protocols/ or don't you know they exist?
(twitter.com/_/status/1205023373786570752)
#
@JudahsShadow
↩️ "hire folks to develop a standard in the open." If only there were some sort of company independent organization that had an open process for creating and recommending standards for the web. Oh wait. That's right there is. https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/

lain_soykaf
repeating my question from yesterday because i think it got lost in the twitter hubbub
#
lain_soykaf
sorry for being a bit out of the loop on this, but what kind of AP events / organization will there actually be at fosdem?
#
jaywink[m]
lain_soykaf (IRC): there is the decentralized internet and privacy devroom: https://lists.fosdem.org/pipermail/fosdem/2019q4/002903.html .. not specific to AP of course
#
lain_soykaf
thank you!
heluecht[m] joined the channel
#
heluecht[m]
lain_soykaf (IRC): do you plan to go there?
#
@andymci
So, fun fact, there's already a decentralized protocol standard for social networks. It's called ActivityPub. https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/
(twitter.com/_/status/1205125828989915144)
#
jaywink[m]
looking forward to meeting yet more fediverse folk at fosdem again \o/
#
jaywink[m]
should start planning travel
#
hankg[m]
wish I could make FOSDEM again this year :(
#
lain_soykaf
Yes, most regular pleroma devs will be there
#
@ClovisGauzy
↩️ Enjoy the Manual : https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/ https://www.w3.org/TR/activitystreams-core/ https://www.w3.org/TR/activitystreams-vocabulary/ Activity Pub is a W3C standard for decentralized networks, and run in every Federated Services (Mastodon, Pleroma, PeerTube, Mobilizon, Plume, PixelFed, etc).
(twitter.com/_/status/1205157423746572291)
#
jacky
will they ever have FOSDEM in the US?
#
jacky
like 1) it's wild expensive from Cali 2) flying isn't too friendly on lil' ol' Earth, lol
#
trwnh
jacky: given us immigration and customs enforcement, and the difficulty in obtaining visas.. probably no
#
jaywink[m]
I hope not :)
#
hankg[m]
the community vibe seems different here too
#
melody
i really wish there were more virtual & unconferences in this space -- the number of people completely barred from participation because of travel issues and the kinds of big decisions that seem to get made at these conferences really skew what voices get heard when it actually matters
#
melody
& thats not actually something the movement can afford considering its ongoing inclusivity issues
#
@9th_Amendment
↩️ @jack Someone already did it and it's called ActivityPub but ok boomer https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/
(twitter.com/_/status/1205190891926888450)
#
heluecht[m]
lain_soykaf: some unimportant Friendica developer will also be there.
#

[@jack] @paintedsky_ca @johns_FSF ActivityPub is great. If the team thinks that’s the best, they will dedicate 100% to it.
#
jacky
also cwebber2, I'm in here
#
jacky
;)
#
cwebber2
hi jacky :)
#
cwebber2
jacky: yeah :) I think you haven't made it on the calls yet but on the last one we were talking about "what are the goals for the socialcg in 2020"... I don't think I'm going to be able to make another december call, but maybe you'd like to join one of the calls in january?
#
cwebber2
and nice to have you here
#
jacky
I'm travelling most of jan so I can try if my laptop gets back to me in time
#
jacky
is there notes from past meetings?
#
jacky
s/is/are/g
#
cwebber2
jacky: yes, old ones are here https://www.w3.org/wiki/SocialCG#Old_meeting_pages_archive but the latest one we linked to from the socialhub.ap.rocks thread

[@jack] @paintedsky_ca @johns_FSF ActivityPub is great. If the team thinks that’s the best, they will dedicate 100% to it.
#
jacky
yeah
#
jacky
someone did ask a good question (good for biz or good for people)
#
Loqi
[@dustyweb] @jack @paintedsky_ca @johns_FSF Hi @jack, co-author of ActivityPub here. How can I help? Would it be useful to talk?
#
jacky
which is kinda implicitly answered
#
cwebber2
jacky: there is a concern with twitter picking up activitypub
#
jacky
yeah I figure
#
cwebber2
look at what happened with google and xmpp
#
jacky
on the XMPP route
#
jacky
right
#
@ErinJHolmes
I used this ActivityPub protocol read as a starting point to understanding how decentralized social networking protocols might work under the surface. https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/#Overview
