[bsky.app/profile/brennan.day] I've completely overhauled my IndieWeb 11ty Starter to make it simpler and more accessible for people getting into JAMstack and the IndieWeb. It now uses Eleventy 3.x with a modular config structure, chota.css instead of Tailwind, and Pagefind for fast, serverless search. from a human sympathy perspective, I can see how someone who lands on any particular random wiki page on the indieweb wiki could have some of these strong reactions, especially if they come from the "I don't need connections" context/preference.
#
[tantek]
I don't think their conclusions are accurate, however I can sympathize with how they could (even in good faith) come to those conclusions based on mindset/context/preferences that they bring
#
[tantek]
am probably going to end up making a big to-do list of things we can improve both on specific wiki pages/tools, and perhaps even some additions to /wikify to help generally improve pages in the future
#
[schmarty]
refining the wiki will always be a continual (and worthy) effort. the IndieWeb exists at the intersections of, and in response to, lots of social, technical, cultural, and personal contexts. and all of them shift over time.
#
[tantek]
I think the concerns about "exclusions" and "tech for tech's sake" (my rephrasings) are always good to be vigilant about. so there may be things we can do to refine the framing/voice of wiki pages to make them more inclusive to more skill levels, and perhaps make sure than any "tech" page has a strong "Why" section that makes it clearer why you should bother that tech (or not!)
#
[schmarty]
i still slightly regret taking the bait of that post, and others, where at the end of a personal journey of learning about IndieWeb the author decides it's not for them and that _everyone needs to know about it_
#
[tantek]
yeah it's hard to walk away from such posts 😂
#
[schmarty]
tl;dr version: "the indieweb is irrelevant! (30 minute estimated read time)" "you sure have a lot of thoughts about something you think is irrelevant." "you don't know me! also i just meant it's irrelevant _to me_. the 'to me' was implied, obviously!"
#
[tantek]
also, engaging with such posts comes from a sense of empathy, so that's what I read into your response to them 🙂
#
[artlung]
the thing the post does several times is presume a IndieWeb opinion is monolithic (for example) interop with silos. but other things too. what engagement folks expect. whether folks intend to monetize or not.
#
[schmarty]
i definitely empathize with feeling overwhelmed by trying to understand the ideas and the realities of what this community aims for and has accomplished. it's a lot, and there's lots of context that is difficult to capture on the wiki. but it really grinds my gears when someone turns their struggle into a public call to ignore the indieweb altogether.
#
[artlung]
ultimately agency over technology feels like a core substrate belief indieweb folk have
#
[artlung]
I want to control my data. I want to be able to make things and share things. whether that's my printer or my health data or my browsing data or whether I look at ads.
#
[tantek]
I think when people leap from personal struggles with some thing like that into a general negative public call, it says more about the person than the thing
#
[artlung]
that substrate is complicated, and interacts with other people, government, and commerce (increasingly both government and commerce tend toward rapaciousness) -- so these are hard problems in constant flux and struggle.
#
[tantek]
basically I treat such posts as (1) an opportunity to mine them for actual nuggets of critical insight (which can come from anyone, especially from a broad variety of perspectives, like bug reports), (2) an opportunity to engage with kindness a la the cliché to provide at least a snippet of a real-world first person counter-example to any (perceived) negativity
#
[artlung]
yes, there are insights and valid complaints in the post. it's worth reading, though this am I merely skimmed it
#
[artlung]
also Betteridge's Rule of Headlines applied several times.
#
[tantek]
yeah I read it somewhere between skimming and full reading, enough to get the gists of a bunch of the critiques, and spot a bunch of mis-impressions, both of which I see as opportunities for improement
#
[tantek]
improvement* even 😉
#
[tantek]
haha yeah that rule/law. I remember when [Jeremy_Keith] introduced me to it and it was a lightbulb moment

this feels indieweb-adjacent so sharing here: https://laurenleek.substack.com/p/temperature-zero-for-culture-why — the connection is, this is taking about a greater "sameness" trend whereas the indieweb is very much about and embracing/supporting/encouraging of everyone to express their individuality
