@gwg [chrisaldrich]why do you think so many people install the indieweb plug-in and set up their profile but still go and add rel=me in their header?
#
GWG
Knowledge?
#
[jgmac1106]
yeah, think so to, when you go down the wiki rabbit hole you find so much without even googling rel=me In all the interviews (only two) they both mention reading about that on people's blogs or the wki and figuring they should do it

GWG I’m curious why you feel like you have to find additional enhancements for the plugin(s) before doing a release.
#
[miklb]
unless I misunderstood what you meant by “need to make more”
#
GWG
[miklb]: Which plugin?
#
[miklb]
“I need to make some more enhancements to it
#
[miklb]
[chrisaldrich]: Any suggestions on what to do while I’m in the code?”
#
GWG
I don't plan on coming back for a bit?
#
GWG
I'm in the zone?
#
[miklb]
ok. Just don’t think you should feel the need to find new features. If you had a list of requests you were working through, or itches, that’s one thing. But feeling like you need to create new features for the sake of it before releasing the work you’ve done doesn’t make as much sense to me.
#
[miklb]
take a breather, let any bugs settle. Stable is good 🙂
#
GWG
I've wanted this one. Edit a mention
#
[miklb]
that’s totally different. And I don’t mean to try and tell you how to develop your plugins. I’m just saying as a user, and someone appreciative of your time, don’t feel like you need to add stuff just for the sake of adding something new.
#
[miklb]
so maybe I misunderstand you.
#
[miklb]
misundertood
#
[miklb]
I know I’m tired, but a typo in my attempt to fix a typo. Time to call it.

I am wondering what people will think of the fact I bundled an avatar image
#
chrisaldrich
i.e. a default image if one doesn't exist?
#
GWG
Yes
#
GWG
WordPress runs even those through gravatar.

Hi everyone. I've finally decidied to dedcicate the time to setup my indieweb site, and I'm using wordpress as a platform since it's familiar to me. Is this an appropriate place to bounce some issues I'm having off some folks?
#
GWG
Yes
#
GWG
We're here to help, if sporadically
#
GWG
If one of us isn't here, we will be eventually
#
GWG
I am usually available at night local time as I am running around during the day, but others have different schedules
#
jhsheridan
Great... thanks for the information. I'll just post my questions here and expect some delay on answers.
#
jhsheridan
So... some of my issues so far aren't really Wordpress specific, but some in the main channel suggested posting in here since it could get lost in the general chit chat of the other room
#
jhsheridan
Currently, I'm just making my way through the indiewebify.me site as a starting point.
#
jhsheridan
The first issue I'm having is on step 2 of the indiewebify my site "Set up Web Sign In". When I test the site, it says that it finds the rel=me urls, but only github is linking back. Facebook and twitter are not linking back. I do have my url in the info on these websites. Is there maybe a specific place it needs to go?
#
jeremycherfas
My recollection is that Twitter is not useful for authorisation, but I cannot be certain.
#
jeremycherfas
I don't use facebook for that.
#
jhsheridan
I see
#
jhsheridan
Well github is linking back. Is that enough verification of my ID for practical purposes?
#
aaronpk
yeah you only need one. try logging in to the wiki at https://indieweb.org if you want to test it for real
#
jhsheridan
ok great... I was able to get signed in
#
jhsheridan
thanks

So... like many other blog style sites, my site will have pages of posts (on the home page), and then the single posts pages for when you click into them. Do I mark up (with h-entry) the pages of posts with excepts the same way I mark up the single posts?
#
jhsheridan
Or do those not get h-entry?
#
sknebel
lists of posts are h-feed with h-entrys in them
#
jhsheridan
ah... that makes sense. Thank you.
#
jhsheridan
I'm now onto webmention testing. Does the "send webmention" button on the indiewebify.me site work? It just goes to a blank page when I click it with my site. Is there anotehr way to test it if so?
#
jeremycherfas
That is usually better.
#
jeremycherfas
And it gives you another test for your rel=me :)
#
jhsheridan
Oh nice
#
jhsheridan
So is this a replacement for the Webmentions indieweb plugin?
#
jeremycherfas
Nota replacement, an alternative. I don't use the WP plugin. And my main site is not WP. So I'm afraid I cannot be very helpful. Just a once over lightly.
#
jhsheridan
I understand. Thanks for your help.

work in progress
#
jeremycherfas
Ah. Ready to receive a webmention yet?
#
jhsheridan
Well I'm not positive yet... haha
#
jeremycherfas
OMG, you're in Lisbon. We keep talking about going back,. Wonderful city for a holiday.
#
jhsheridan
but if you would send one, that would help me greatly
#
jhsheridan
I'm bout to be there on Monday
#
jeremycherfas
Stand by ...
#

Gotta go now. Have fun.

Hey <!channel> take a look at the rough draft of the visual I made and let me know if I made any technical mistakes

Maybe if I have time one day I will use a div border and turn the image into a web page so [kevinmarks] doesn't key my car

Does anyone have experience integrating the post kinds plugin into custom themes?
#
jhsheridan
I know tons about custom theming, but I'm having some trouble understanding the template hierarchy as it relates to post kinds
[schmarty] and [tantek] joined the channel
#
GWG
I wrote the post kinds plugin, you just need a kind_views directory in your theme and it will override the templates in the views folder of the plugin
#
jhsheridan
oh awesome
#
jhsheridan
best possible answer
#
GWG
I designed it to be themeable
#
GWG
I knew the simple generic templates wouldn't always work for everyone
#
GWG
Also, you can remove the content filter and call the function to get the template directly
#
GWG
It is based on get_template_part
#
GWG
Although if you come up with a nice presentation, PRs are always appreciated
#
jhsheridan
so the stuff in the views folder in the plugin, which I'm overwriting, is the content for the_content()
#
jhsheridan
?
#
GWG
It is added to the content, but sometimes it is the only content
#
GWG
It is what says, Bookmarked, URL, author, and so on
#
jhsheridan
I see
#
GWG
For example, in this post, only the replied to part at the top is the viee
#
jhsheridan
so the bottom part is the_content()
[kevinmarks] joined the channel
#
jhsheridan
and the part above it is addded by the template in the plugin/views folder
#
GWG
Yes
#
GWG
Exactly
#
GWG
It provides the context
#
jhsheridan
I understand.
#
GWG
But I am not sure how that will play out in a Gutenberg world
#
jhsheridan
I am writing a theme from scratch
#
GWG
Will it support Microformats 2?
#
jhsheridan
that's the plan
#
GWG
Great
#
jhsheridan
I'm very good with wordpress, but I'm new to indieweb, and it's a little hard to wrangle all the info
#
jhsheridan
I think it may be easier for me to intercept the template at a higher level
#
jhsheridan
because I'd like to have granualar control over the html output
#
jhsheridan
for design reasons
#
GWG
jhsherid, if you have a theme that supports mf2, Post Kinds, webmentions, Syndication Links and Simple Location I'd be thrilled
#
jhsheridan
that's what I'm working towards, but there's really a lot to wrap your head around
#
GWG
Read one of the kind templates in the view directory, it is pretty simple
#
jhsheridan
and the documentation isn't so great in a lot of places
#
GWG
Tell me if I can help
#
jhsheridan
thanks so much
