@photomatt I recall the jokes made about crusty blogrolls when we deprecated the links manager. Now, folks are exhuming it for use as their canonical OPML source to feed OPML subscriptions. https://boffosocko.com/2017/11/10/a-following-page/

Loqi is a friendly and useful bot present in the IndieWeb discussion channels https://indieweb.org/User:Loqi.me

A true OG
#
[jgmac1106]
I am going to end up recording soup to nuts tutorials for all the themes for their slight variations.
#
[jgmac1106]
I need to double check but Independent Publisher from directory seems different in some places, but as always documenting.
#
[jgmac1106]
If you see anything I mistake about a theme let me know. Happy to record. Trying to keep everything under three minutes
#
[jgmac1106]
Retake easy
#
MarcoZDe
OK, next thing: Sort out Twitter crossposting. Right now I am using XYZ Map Twitter Auto Publish, but that might not be a good choice.
#
[jgmac1106]
@marcoZDe I use Bridgy when trying to keep the Twitter Thread alive.
#
[jgmac1106]
I was using SNAP but got my hand slapped for @ mentioning too many athletes during major US Sporting Event
#
[jgmac1106]
So been using Bridgy for everything.
#
MarcoZDe
Particularly if I want to post statuses from my blog. Was impressed when [chrisaldrich] replied to my tweet earlier from his site.
#
MarcoZDe
[jgmac1106]: never used Snap.
#
[jgmac1106]
So to keep Twitter thread alive, you reply to each tweet as a new note, and that threads with Twitter as do webmentions
#
MarcoZDe
[jgmac1106]: note? Not reply?

Does WP just write a new theme each year? Or was twentysixteen kept on so they renamed it to twentyseveteen
#
[jgmac1106]
I mean reply, my bad. Start a new thread with note
#
[jgmac1106]
Each theme and each post kind syndicates slightly differently. Takes some mucking about
#
[jgmac1106]
But I have canoes full of tons of folks across dozens of tweets I capture with webmentions
#
MarcoZDe
Using TwentySixteen. Need to make sure the theme I use is accessible. Not all themes are.
#
[jgmac1106]
And it's cool because the archive view of previous and next makes it a book captured on my domain... Branches in threads break but my post linear

from a quick look at the code, it seems it can't identify your h-card as being the main thing and thus falls back to just looking for the first post, yes. I think if you had a rel=author to your homepage xray would find your h-card instead

hm, then I must have missed something in the source
#

ah, yes, it does look for an h-card, but only to find other objects with the same author... guess that'd be a question for aaronpk if he wants x-ray to be able to handle pages like yours or what markup he'd recommend

#

so I finally fixed yesterday's issue w/ h-card - gave up and made a separate home page w/ all identity stuff. Indiewebify.me likes everything now.
#
donblanco
just hand-coded all the basics into the page.
#
MarcoZDe
jgmac1106: Thanks! Let me know if you need any more information. The blog uses all the recommended plugins except the Location one, and it uses TwentySixteen.
#

I also bypassed yesterday's issue w/ the IndieWeb 2016 theme by just using 2017 w/ the rel=me widget in the footer.
#
GWG
donblanco: Feel free to file an issue about the Indieweb 2016 theme
#
GWG
I use it myself and would fix any markup issues
#
donblanco
@GWG I'm not sure it was the theme exactly - there is a byline in the sidebar, but it is display:none so you can't see it but it gets parsed
#
donblanco
only for classes .sticky and .posted-on is it set to display:none - a bit beyond my WP knowledge

MarcoZDe: it looks like you just have a syndication link to your twitter profile. If you use the "Bridgy Publish To->Twitter" checkbox (or the submit post on your bridgy page), it should update your post with the tweet syndication link.
#
dougbeal
MarcoZDe: If you manually update the link to the actual tweet, you should be able to retry the replies
#
MarcoZDe
dougbeal: Now I am confused. In the syndication links (when I edit that post), I do have a link to the full Twitter status update. It was inserted there automatically after I published the post for the first time. I thought that was enough? I even copied the status link from the post's "also published on" section via the right-click menu which I then pasted above. So... What's wrong? I don't understand.

I poked bridgy to parse your site, it's problem is that it doesn't find your posts because they have no permalinks marked up with "u-url" on your homepage
#
MarcoZDe
sknebel: I'm sorry, but I don't even know what that means. I set up this blog as I did my other two, and where web mentions are working. I don't remember doing anything different. What could be the cause for this thing to be missing?
#
sknebel
MarcoZDe: that's a question for someone who knows about wordpress, which I don't really
#
MarcoZDe
sknebel: OK, thanks for checking anyway! I am totally stumped, since even the theme I am using is the same on all three blogs, on two it is working, and on this one it is not. And I have absolutely no idea why, since I did set them up identically, or so I think at least.
#
sknebel
one thing is that bridgy only needs them when there is no backlink (which failed for whatever reason) in the tweet, if there is one it can just use that to find the original post
jhsheridan joined the channel
#
MarcoZDe
sknebel: Yes I noticed that the link in the resulting Tweet is totally bogus. I don't know what happened, was my first try. Previous web mentions on the other two blogs were from already existing tweets that the crawler found and correctly sorted out the permalinks. This was my first try at publishing with the Bridgy publisher, and it promptly gave me this bogus link.

jgmac1106
He is using 2016 IndieWeb I think, this has native microformats, installing the plugin could lead to injection of extra
#
sknebel
is that the indieweb variant of the theme?
#
MarcoZDe
jgmac1106: I do have 2016, and I have the Indiewb plugin, but I don't have an Indieweb theme installed, at least not consciously. I thought I had the standard old TwentySixteen.

yeah…..that is risky

At least I didn't install a new theme recently, this theme has been on my blog for months, if not over a year.

MarcoZDe, I know what you mean
#
sknebel
since it seems a bunch of people use it successfully, maybe worth putting it somewhere else too? or at least keep direct links in the wiki?
#

There are links on the wiki. The Getiing Started Page IMO just needs the IndieMark stuff removed, trying to rewrite it
#
jgmac1106
Getting Started should just be about “Getting Started"
#
jgmac1106
the theme maintainers find the theme approval process too cumbersome to have them on Wordpress.org

#
jgmac1106
ggod idea [sknebel]
#

#
jgmac1106
I did do that here: https://indieweb.org/User:Jgregorymcverry.com/getting-started-with-WordPress-for-beginners to 2016…I was thinking of taking each theme description I am writing and making sure each them has an article using that structure

What does one have to do to become a "voiced" member here? :) Just curious.

MarcoZDe: you can customize the tweet text using the excerpt field
#
jackjamieson
MarcoZDe, to add to dougbeal you can set an option in the bridgy plugin to "Set Twitter from Post Excerpt"
#
dougbeal
jackjamieson: oh right, forgot you had to turn it on first :)
#
jackjamieson
From the wordpress dashboard: IndieWeb->Bridgy->"Set Twitter from Post Excerpt"
#
MarcoZDe
dougbeal: Aha, interesting... Thanks! And one more step I need to take if I want to quickly publish something. Hm. This is fun, but also baffling. ;)
#
jackjamieson
dougbeal I forgot the option existed altogether! Enabled it ages ago and having touched the setting since :)
#
jackjamieson
MarcoZDe: It shouldn't take an extra step, actually, once you set that option. You could choose to customize the excerpt if you want, but otherwise it should be generated automatically
#
MarcoZDe
jackjamieson: Thanks! Would probably have fallen into that trap. :)
#
MarcoZDe
Oh, really, does the excerpt get a copy of the body text?

hey MarcoZDe, you've seen that you can preview on bridgy, to see what it will do, before actually tweeting, right?
#
MarcoZDe
OK, calling it a night (am in Europe). Will tinker more tomorrow. Thank you all!
#
jackjamieson
Have a good night MarcoZDe!
#
MarcoZDe
snarfed: No, I have not. How would I do that if I haven't even published the post yet?
#
dougbeal
bridgy has to interpert the post otherwise
#
sknebel
MarcoZDe: what shariff plugin are you using?
#
snarfed
MarcoZDe: yes, true, you'd have to publish the post on your site first
#
snarfed
the preview UI is on your user page on https://brid.gy/
#
MarcoZDe
snarfed: Oh is that the thing where you can paste an URL and hit "Discover"? I thought this would start the publishing thing, I wasn't aware that this is a preview.
#
snarfed
nah, discover is different. the preview UI is on the right side. (or "below" if you're using a screen reader)
#
MarcoZDe
snarfed: So as long as I don't have a feel for how things work, I would go publish with the Bridgy publishing checkbox unchecked, then preview on Bridgy, and if that works, check the box while editing my post and hit Update?
#
snarfed
the preview UI label is "Enter post URL:"
#
snarfed
MarcoZDe: probably? i'm not that familiar with the wordpress plugin, but sounds reasonable
#
MarcoZDe
snarfed: Thanks, will give that a go tomorrow. For tonight, my brain is fried. ;) See you all tomorrow!
snarfed left the channel
#
dougbeal
MarcoZDe: you can also just hit post from the Bridgy UI, if you are going there to perview it
#
MarcoZDe
dougbeal: OK!

so I have Ryan Barrett's Micropub plugin installed, but I can't pass any tests at Micropub.rocks

test 100 - Create an h-entry post returns "insufficient scope"

donblanco: did you install the IndieAuth plugin as well?

While I'm at it, I have the Post Kind plugin installed - trying to figure out how to import my GoodReads csv file, but all option seem to require 'pro' upgrades. :(
#
jackjamieson
donblanco: re: IndieAuth, there was an update to the plugin recently that addressed some authorization issues. Not sure if your issue is the same, but updating indieauth might help
#
jackjamieson
And re: the post kind plugin, do you mean 'pro' upgrades within the plugin or in goodreads?
#
donblanco
pro upgrades in all wp csv importer plugins
#
donblanco
IndieAuth plugin is at 3.1.1 which appears to be most recent
#
jackjamieson
Got it, in that case it might be possible to troubleshoot by falling back to using indieauth.com
#
donblanco
never used indieauth.com before - I suppose I would need to deactivate the IndieAuth plugin?
#
jackjamieson
Yep - fortunately indieauth.com is fairly quick to set up
#
sknebel
donblanco: is "insufficient scope" all you get?
#
donblanco
using IndieAuth.com I get this error on Micropub.rocks when trying to do test 100 - create an h-entry post
#
donblanco
"invalid access token: {\"error\":\"unauthorized\",\"error_description\":\"The token provided was malformed\"}"
#
donblanco
and I authorized using github, the only 'authorized' provider that I have any 'rel=me' links to/from

@jackjamieson yes, logged in to other services before. Results are inconsistent, though

indieauth.com for both authorization_endpoint and token_endpoint looks good.
#
gRegorLove
Can you try logging in to indielogin.com?

I've got to go offline, bye everyone, and good luck, donblanco
#

is there a "This Day In History" wordpress plugin which gives you "On This Day" functionality?
#
tantek
e.g. this site: ghacks.net appears to have it at the bottom of the home page and every article, and it's a WordPress blog
#
donblanco
@gRegorLove - yep, successful
#
donblanco
@gRegorLove - is it possible that micropub.rocks had cached something? I used a different email, and now tests are working
#
sknebel
had you logged in again?
#
sknebel
although even then it's possible it had something stored in your session or so that didn't match
#
donblanco
seems to have required both changing auth source as well as 'starting over' on micropub.rocks
[jgmac1106] and [cleverdevil] joined the channel
#

well well - also managed to get Indigenous reader working! Double success.
#

From what I could glean, if you're using the Twenty Sixteen Indieweb WP theme, then you don't need to use the Post Kinds plugin?

I'm wondering if that's what's causing me dramas with validating endpoints and what not.... Going to start the process of setting up my WP install to IndieWeb this morning all fresh.
#
GWG
[matpacker]: I wrote the Twenty Sixteen Indieweb WP Theme to work with Post Kinds.
#
[matpacker]
GWG: I meant to say microformats, sorry.
#
donblanco
I will try switching back to IndieAuth plugin later (movie/TV night)
#
GWG
donblanco: You might want to use that fixed version
#
GWG
Due the scope issue
#
GWG
I need to find a reviewer
#
[matpacker]
Dang, that didn't work.
#
[matpacker]
So, I can authorise with IndieAuth, micro.blog, and Aperture. I can post from micro.blog to my WP install...but I can't post from Indigenous / Monocle.
#
GWG
[matpacker]: Do me a favor? Go into your user profile and tell me what your user_url says?

#

[dougbeal]: An approved reviewer. I'm not sure you are one.
#
GWG
[matpacker]: And that is what your profile says as well?
#
[matpacker]
GWG: correct
#
GWG
[matpacker]: So, that eliminates one common issue.

I'm running down a few possibilities in where things might be failing in the code
#
GWG
The IndieAuth plugin can use the author profile.
#
GWG
The Micropub plugin, which uses IndieAuth.com, doesn't have that capability...yet
#
[matpacker]
GWG: I get a different error, from Monocle - indieauth_error
#
GWG
[matpacker]: The IndieAuth plugin is enabled?
#
[matpacker]
correct
#
[matpacker]
GWG: would you like an account on my site, might be faster to trouble shoot?
#
GWG
[matpacker]: Will give it a shot.
#
GWG
You can delete it.
#
[matpacker]
Cool, what email address you want me to send details to?
#
dougbeal
GWG: we should add a test that would catch the scope encoding bug, as well
#
dougbeal
GWG: I can do it if you like, want to do some testing as part of HWC
#
GWG
dougbeal: I'm working on tests for Micropub. I intend to do IndieAuth unit testing next. It needs more. It only has a few
#
GWG
[matpacker]: My email address is myfirstname@mylastname.com
#
GWG
dougbeal: I just have not been able to isolate this bug.
#
