[chrisaldrich] Where the theme and the mark up does become a bit more important is in how the receiving site is able to parse your post for displaying it. The receiver will look for the post type (like, bookmark, reply, etc.) and details about the name and avatar to potentially display them. But even if it doesn't find those pieces marked up by your theme it will still receive the notification and allow them to show something.
