[tw2113_Slack_] so the WordPress.com fee has nothing to do with having to pay to use ActivityPub. Free WordPress.com plans don't allow installing plugins in general. You have to have a paid plan to start.

[tw2113_Slack_] it is probably best, if you want to use the ActivityPub plugin to go with WP Engine/SiteGround/Kinsta/Nexcess, or of course any cheap general hosting if that's your preference.

i was asking mostly for Bryan who I linked to above on Mastodon. Wanted to help him as best I could
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
I don't use AP that much, but it's done via DigitalOcean for my hosting

So, activitypub will be free forever, otherwise I wouldn’t have done the deal!
#
[pfefferle]
And it will always be open source and there is one version used for .org and .com
#
[pfefferle]
Because .com is a big beast with some specialties, it takes some time to deploy that properly!
#
[pfefferle]
The current situation (that you have to pay for the hosting to use the plugin) is only because of infrastructure requirements! I am working on that.
#
[pfefferle]
The idea is to have the plugin for way more plans, if not for every .com user, but I am no sales person ☺
#
[pfefferle]
Yesterday I have refactored the complete following part and the persistence of that and next week I want to help django working on signature verification. This is the minimum I wanted to have ready before working on .com

and we have to ensure, that the plugin will work with the internal caching and performance plugins!

[pfefferle] Do you think that the ActivityPub plugin will be able to follow Mastodon users in the future? (Without the Friends plugin.)

It is the last on my list, but if I can work full time on the plugin, why not!
#
[TMichelleMoore]
[pfefferle] That would be awesome! And you have a whole company and friends that are behind you! Congratulations again on your wonderful opportunity!

ActivityPub being as chatty as it is will likely have infrastructure costs to turn on for wordpress users, there are a lot of them

[KevinMarks] Interesting observation. I wonder is there a way to merge or meld :-) it with the person’s native Mastodon account? Letting the infrastructure remain on Mastodon and the communications to Mastodon be sourced from WordPress. OR meld ActivityPub with Brid.gy and BrdigyFed.
#
[pfefferle]
But that does also produce costs. You can ask [snarfed] about that 😊

AP is indeed chatty, but you can pretty much ignore the majority of those incoming activities, so the compute doesn't have to be expensive

[pfefferle]: Any thoughts on the mf2_author/author_url issue of late?

Somehow I haven't quite figured out what added value the Friends plugin + AP gives me. I always get the message "Unfortunately, comments were not available via RSS." but I explicitly set it to use the feed via AP and not something else.

I have not yet found a way to properly respond to other content with my site. This is currently all done manually via Post Kinds box above. Neither Friends works, nor apps like Indigenious or other micropub solutions.

[chrisbergr]
- Which of course is also because I need PLL meta data as well as specific categories.

I'll have to build my own iPhone app, I guess.

[chrisbergr] The Friends plugin added users to my site and I don’t want that.
#
[chrisbergr]
Oh, I didn't even notice that. I don't like that either...

[TMichelleMoore] "a way to merge or meld :-) it with the person’s native Mastodon account" is what Bridgy (non-Fed) does

[snarfed] I only wanted to meld the Mastodon name because of Kevin’s comment about the infrastructure - you could leave the load on Mastodon. That wouldn’t be my first choice. In my head, and I really need to write it down, there are features of all three that would be nice together. When I write it down, I will tag you.

[TMichelleMoore] Some days ago I've written a reply to your watercolor post. https://christian-hockenberger.com/reply/5990/ I was not sure if the webmention was sent properly, so I tried using your response-ping me form below the comment form. The endpoint said "forbidden". Don't know why.

[preview] [Christian Hockenberger] I’m not familiar with the American school system, do you actually learn to paint with Watercolor in Middle School as well? We had that as a subject in fine arts, unfortunately I didn’t appreciate it enough.I’m very excited to see what you learn...
