#
acegiak
has pfefferle been on today?
#
tantek
haven't seen him
#
acegiak
kk, i need help fixing sempress
#
acegiak
might email him
#
acegiak
actually, whats the expected behavipur of webmentioning someone's root domain?
#
tantek
caseorganic - I've decided to postpone blogging about all the things that went (or started to go) wrong in 2003 until after your talk, and instead I'm going to focus on trying to add to the /timeline and /history pages to hopefully provide you with more background material
#
Loqi
ABOUT ALL THE THINGS http://loqi.me/86g
#
tantek
Thanks Loqi.
#
Loqi
you're welcome
#
tantek
acegiak - is that the indieweb equivalent of a "poke"?
#
acegiak
thatd what i was wondering? somewhere between a poke and posting on someone's wall
#
tantek
actually, in all seriousness, webmentioning someone's root domain is like an @-mention
#
tantek
or a +mention on G+
#
acegiak
yeah, cool
#
tantek
in our glorious indieweb dashboards of the future, we'll see a stream of recent federated person-mentions like that
#
tantek
just as https://twitter.com/mentions shows you Twitter-silo mentions
#
tantek
(well most of you that is, they're not really @-mentions for me in practice)
#
acegiak
tantek,im debating refactoring whisperfollow a little so that others can pull all the non-wordpress stuff out and use it to the same end
#
caseorganic
tantek: ok!
#
acegiak
what are people using at the moment?
#
tantek
caseorganic - as such, please let me know if you have any particular requests/prioritization for timeline research & documentation
#
tantek
and I'll keep updating /timeline accordingly with whatever I can dig up
#
tantek
hopefully in time for you to use/incorporate
#
caseorganic
tantek: hmm, i would like to have more evidence as to why 2003 was pivotal
#
tantek
googles RSS/Atom wars
#
acegiak
i dont understand why rss died
#
acegiak
i love it
#
tantek
more grist for the death of RSS mill
#
tantek
caseorganic, 2003 was the start of the Atom/RSS wars - which sucked in so many technical "great minds" of blogging and distracted them from more important things, like UX, improving features of blogging etc.
#
tantek
here's a citation for now - from 2004, but it indicates "last year" … "not a little disagreement and discussion in the community" http://www.cmswire.com/cms/micro-cms/blog-format-wars-rss-vs-atom-let-there-be-rsspeace-000224.php
#
tantek
so while the technical creative minds of open blogging argued and debated formats, the social network silos slowly iterated user features
#
tantek
eventually innovating much past blogs
bnvk joined the channel
#
tantek
we mocked the nastiness of Myspace, but they had the integrated post/read idea already in (2003?) and blogs had not even noticed that yet
#
tantek
Twitter, 2006, was the first *really obvious* sign of things to come. Then FB becoming open to all to sign-up along with the mass flight from MySpace to FB.
#
tantek
the RSS/Atom wars continued through at least 2007! http://readwrite.com/2007/07/25/syndication_wars_2007_atom_rss20
#
tantek
oh my goodness, Seth Finkelstein killed it with this blog post - from 2004! http://sethf.com/infothought/blog/archives/000558.html
#
tantek
Oh dear - start your conspiracy theories, Google was pouring fuel on the syndication war fires back in 2004: http://web.archive.org/web/20050308222534/http://news.com.com/2100-1032-5157662.html - the same Google that eventually shutdown its Google Reader - the free product that stopped anyone from bothering to build new readers
#
tantek
but back to http://sethf.com/infothought/blog/archives/000558.html, this quote is golden: "How can you route around big media, revolutionize society, create new forms of participatory democracy, solve deeply complicated social problems ... when "we" CAN'T EVEN AGREE ON A FORMAT FOR WEB SITE CONTENT SYNDICATION?!" [CAPS in original!]
#
Loqi
tantek has 19 karma
#
tantek
MT shot itself in the foot with licensing issues, thus paving the way for the WordPress monoculture we have now.
#
tantek
and everyone knows what happens when you have a monoculture - innovation slows to a crawl
#
tantek
yes, caseorganic, the RSS/Atom wars are quite exceptionally well documented, because of course, people *blogged* about them

caseorganic
tantek: i am in need of a very good screenshot from the rss/atom wars that really shows the battle
#
caseorganic
tantek: the one i have now is not representative enough
#
tantek
and image search for RSS/Atom wars is useless. thank you google (not).
#
tantek
caseorganic - I think best bet would be for you to make your own battle image from the Atom and RSS logos

curious to hear about the no service for birthday < 1911?
#
bret
really?
#
hupili
that one is a joke~
#
bret
oh heh
#
hupili
but <13 no service is a real thing
#
bret
yeah but that is actually understandable.... One of my old hobbies was polluting my silo profiles with bad data
#
hupili
the speaker deck slides do not have animation
#
hupili
this google slide is better to watch
#
bret
sites like quora would literally have humans email you if they spotted a fake "real" name
#
hupili
especially without the talk
#
bret
ok off to bed

good night
#
Loqi
see you in the morning!

#
tantek
(even though I wasn't there in person)
#
tantek
has anyone done a blog post on how to export your data from Dopplr?
#
tantek
was thinking of doing a quick one
#
tantek
(since I already figured out the details and posted them to the site-deaths page)
#
bret
im looking for a flickr alternative
ryana joined the channel
#
pdurbin
bret: what does it have the flickr doesn't?
#
bret
a user interface that works on old computers
#
bret
a paid option, etc
#
pdurbin
huh. myOpenId on the death watch. I think it was one of the bigger ones
#
tantek
hmm - Flickr has a paid option (I pay for mine too)
#
tantek
pdurbin - yeah we try to keep track
#
tantek
and note how to export data too
#
pdurbin
sure. excellent guides on data liberation
#
tantek
there's definitely an import problem however
#
tantek
so few sites actually support importing anything from anywhere else
#
tantek
one big exception: Wordpress is quite amazing about importing from pretty much any other blogging platform or format
#
pdurbin
huh. you'd think sites would want to make it easy to move over to them. smart of wordpress
#
pdurbin
I think squarespace lets you import too
#
tantek
yes - it is smart of wordpress
#
tantek
pdurbin - if you know how/what import support squarespace has (even a link), could you add it to http://indiewebcamp.com/Squarespace ?
#
pdurbin
meh. it's a proprietary platform so I have little interest in it. they just advertise on podcasts I listen to. I'm not even sure about their import stuff
#
aaronpk
bret: what do you want that flickr doesn't have?
#
bret
i super dislike the new interface
#
bret
it runs at 5 fps on my laptops
#
bret
spikes my cpu on my desktop etc
#
bret
i also dislike I can't pay for it any longer. My pro expired and then they removed it as an option to get it back
#
aaronpk
ah yea the interface changes have been getting annoying
#
aaronpk
that's weird they won't let you pay for it anymore though
#
bret
yeah, you can keep pro if you already had it
#
bret
but the removed it as an option, leaving $50 no ads option, and $200 for 2Tb :/
#
bret
its a total shift away from the original attitude of the original site. It seems to fall much more in like with a typical silo it seems. IE crappy TOS + moar ads is of higher value to yahoo than an honest paid service
#
aaronpk
oh weird
#
aaronpk
well there's always openphoto
#
aaronpk
I may have to add an editing interface to my flickr clone soon then
