where you give indieauth.com me=http://leoville.net and it says "no silly me=https://www.leoville.net/"

Fixed! I'll let people know.
#
aaronpk
kylewm: that's an interesting way of phrasing it
#
aaronpk
that turns it more into regular OAuth vs strongly tied to identity
#
aaronpk
because at that point, the initial step has nothing to do with claiming who you are
#
kylewm

KevinMarks
the thing about relmeauth was that it was a judo trick to use silo's auth against them
#
KevinMarks
which is cool, but if there is a native auth, somewhat redundant
#
aaronpk
that's what indieauth is
#
KevinMarks
but focusing on UX means we need to compete with silo's on experience, and watching leo flail for minutes there made the point
#
aaronpk
still needs to watch the rest of that
#
kylewm
he kept clicking the "login with indieauth.com" button on indieauth
#
aaronpk
wat, that should have been disabled
#
aaronpk
i should just remove it actualy
#
aaronpk
hey guess what, someone else should make a service like indieauth.com
#
aaronpk
then we can race to make them better
#

Jeena
Hm it kind of isn't explicit either on /Micropub nor on /person-tag that you should do category=http://example.com in micropub to person tag a person. The use of u-category kind of implies that but how do I add h-card to that micropub call at the same time? or how do I know that this is meant as a person tag? Do I look if it looks like a domain? Not all domains are personal domains.
#
Jeena
s/either/neither

#
aaronpk
we're going to have to either inspect the string to see if it looks liek a URL (begins with "http:" or "https:", or will have to require that an h-card is sent in the micropub request
#
tantek
Jeena - too many questions at once! :)
#
Jeena
hehe, it is basically just one, how do I know that a category is a person-tag with micropub?
#
Jeena
Hm, to get the name I would mostly need to get the homepage of the domain and try to find the name in a h-card there anyway
#
tantek
right
#
kylewm
huh, I'm seeing "indieauth.com/auth:
#
kylewm
This auth server cannot be used to authenticate to itself"
#
tantek
Jeena - maybe I should add a flow chart for tagging?
#
tantek
category = URL -> you're tagging that post with that URL
#
Jeena
kylewm, this has been there for quite a while and it always confused me
#
tantek
if that URL is to a personal site (representative h-card, or shortcut with your own /nicknames-cache ) then it's a person tag
#
Jeena
yeah, that is clear for microformats
#
tantek
you can similarly use that URL as tag technique to tag a post as being about a company, a product, etc
#
Jeena
it is not clear for micropub
#
tantek
there should be a 1:1 mapping
#
tantek
we've worked pretty hard at that
#
Jeena
would I need to do it with a nested h-card somehow?
#
Jeena
so first post a h-card and get the url and then use location to reference it?
#
Jeena
hm no
#
tantek
you could, but don't have to
#
Jeena
or yes? hehe I'm confused
#
tantek
you literally need only the URL for micropub purposes
#
KartikPrabhu
your backend can add h-cards if you want
#
Jeena
when i get the url http://facebook.com then it is not a person, how do I know that?
#
Jeena
I can only know that by getting the homepage and checking for a h-card or is there some other way?
#
Jeena
you can see my UI for that https://jeena.net/photos/164 it kind of relates to people not domains
#
aaronpk
sounds like i should just not show the "indieauth.com/auth this auth server cannot be used to authenticate itself"
#
aaronpk
i think it might make more sense to show that once more people have their own auth servers
#
aaronpk
s/their own/other
#
Loqi
aaronpk meant to say: i think it might make more sense to show that once more people have other auth servers
#
aaronpk
i think value-inspection to determine whether a value is a URL might be required here
#
aaronpk
also note that your micropub endpoint doesn't necessarily have to do that, it coudl be done at rendering time
#
Jeena
yeah it doesn't matter when I do it, I need to decide some time ;)
#
Jeena
I think I will start with just checking for urls, and in the future I can add getting a h-card from that homepage, etc.

actually freenode is pretty restrictive on the length of names so probably better to use a symbol

#

#
aaronpk
is .example a real TLD?
#
elf-pavlik
see wikipedia link
#

elf-pavlik: welcome back! and we've been using example.com and example.net as TLDs to indicate explicitly that the examples use *different* TLDs
#

#
aaronpk
we've been using things like alice.example.com and bob.example.org
#
elf-pavlik
.com .org easy to miss
#
tantek
better than no difference
#
elf-pavlik
The name example is reserved by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) in RFC 2606 (June 1999) as a domain name that may not be installed as a top-level domain in the Domain Name System (DNS) of the Internet.[1]
#
tantek
elf-pavlik: anyway, it's a solved (and better solved) problem with *.example.com *.example.net *.example.org so let's continue using those. no advantage to .example, and disadvantage (implies same TLD).
#
elf-pavlik
curl -i alice.example.org
#
elf-pavlik
for organizationad (shared) spaces using e.g. social.w3.example sounds reasonable or whatwg.example ...
#

that just doesn't look like a domain
#
elf-pavlik
ok
#
tantek
yup - more confusion is likely with .example

The object-oriented-programming antipattern is the excessive / unnecessary use of object-oriented-programming (OOP) and OOP techniques when simple procedural functions would have sufficed, with less overhead, fewer files to navigate around, fewer indirections to follow while debugging, etc https://indiewebcamp.com/OOP
