good morning!
#
aaronpk
i'm struggling with an information architecture/content thing on my site right now
leg joined the channel
#
aaronpk
my website used to be more of a portfolio, and then I eventually added blog/articles to it, and now it's almost entirely a stream of posts
#
aaronpk
i want to bring back some of the more static/portfolio aspects of it, but not sure how to make that fit in with the rest of the content
#
Loqi
[Kyle Mahan] I definitely still want to have a website, but Iā€™m not sure I want it to be a list of my tweets and instagrams anymore.
#
aaronpk
that got me thinking about it again
#
snarfed
aaronpk: so there are streams, there are static pages/collections, and there are headers/sidebars that show up on many/all of the above
#
snarfed
pick whether you want your front page to be stream, static, or hybrid, and then liberally link to other streams and static stuff in the headers and sidebars?
#
aaronpk
also partly inspired by going back to the freelance world, where people looking at my site might want to pay me for something, which was not true when I had a full time job
#
snarfed
oh wow, wait, did the open gov gig not work out? or was that not full time?
#
aaronpk
I came across Ben Ramsey's site a while ago, and I like how the home page is laid out https://benramsey.com/
#
snarfed
there are also more drastic departures like e.g. http://bot.werd.io/

#
tantek
aaronpk it's a natural tension between substantive but potentially out of date / old / not new (portfolio), and lighter-weight / informal but current / new (stream)
#
tantek
snarfed, I think the "pick one, then link to the others" is a bit of a design cop-out
#
tantek
good design should find the right (or a good) balance
#
aaronpk
yeah it's tricky. I definitely still want my main stream of posts on my home page, but I want to be able to feature(?) certain things too
#
tantek
what is a home page?
#
Loqi
Your homepage represents you on the web, typically at the top of your domain, and shows your name and an iconic representation, often marked up with h-card https://indieweb.org/home_page
#
tantek
I think there's a good variety of indieweb examples there
#
tantek
and feel free to add more, and add your thoughts about what you want to Brainstorming
#
tantek
aaronpk FWIW I do like what you've been doing with the "latest of type that links to that type of post stream" summary at the top. adactio.com is similar in that regard
#
aaronpk
yes I like that too
#
tantek
I think it would be perfectly reasonable to similarly feature "recent projects" among that
#
aaronpk
I'm thinking about adding a section above that, under my bio, with something like recent projects
#
tantek
if you want that to be a primary thing people see when they go to your home page, and then they can scroll down a bit to see "what's new with you right now" (your stream)
#
tantek
right
#
tantek
I think there's plenty of room for hybrid design experiments like that
#
tantek
and it's more interesting to explore that
begriffs joined the channel
#
tantek
than just pendulum between 100% static / portfolio, and 100% just a (composite) stream of posts
begriffs joined the channel
#
tantek
which seems to be what happens to many folks
#
tantek
"I want a portfolio site that shows what I've done." "This now looks old and dead (toss)." "I want a blog that shows the most recent thing at the top". "This doesn't really show you what I do and why you should hire me (toss)." "I want a portfolio of recent projects". Repeat
#
aaronpk
trying to figure out how to fit a link to this page into it as well https://aaronparecki.com/video/ since it's not just an example of past project, but also about how to book me for new work

looking at kylewm.com, I really like the subtle little Twitter icons at the end of his notes that link to the tweet syndicated copy. it's actually ambiguous in presentation whether it was POSSEd or PESOSd I think maybe that's ok. Either way it's a nice little subtle indicator - here is a tweet-like thing
#
snarfed
tantek: agreed! i use the same design
#
tantek
I want to capture that bit of micro-design somewhere on the wiki. It's a nice pattern
#
tantek
snarfed, what's particularly impressive to me is how unobtrusive it is even on notes in a list / stream

it isn't noise per se, but my feed reader has more useful/intersting stuff than FB timeline and so I don't want to mix them

for the next HWC SF 2016-10-19, since only two of us have RSVPd so far (co-hosts KevinMarks and myself), I am considering moving it forward a week to 10/26 (have already booked MozSF space just in case). Any SF people want to speak up to offer an opinion?
