!tell KartikPrabhu there are several implementations mentioned on the wiki, including several hubs: https://indieweb.org/PuSH#Hubs
#
Loqi
Ok, I'll tell them that when I see them next
#
KartikPrabhu
yeah didn't find those at the time
#
tantek
ah I see aaronpk already linked to them
#
KartikPrabhu
yeah they were linked after I argued a bit about it :P
#
KartikPrabhu
in any case, for the time being I don't find PuSH very useful for my site so I'll drop looking at it

KartikPrabhu: the realtime aspect is pretty awesome
#
tantek
e.g. when I publish a post, people see it in their woodwind within seconds - without polling
#
KartikPrabhu
yeah that I agree, except the spec emphasises "polling sucks" aspect
#
tantek
yes, polling sucks for realtime
#
tantek
and clearly you appreciate "realtime" since you appreciate using IRC :)
#
KartikPrabhu
well it does not say that ;)
#
tantek
I am saying it
#
KartikPrabhu
no, I agree with the reatime thing, that is pretty cool
#
tantek
for me that was sufficient reason
#
KartikPrabhu
i think spec or wiki (if not already) might want to emphasise why it is useful instead of "old way is bad"
#
tantek
because then *every* subscriber that consues PuSH sees my posts in realtime, whether folks on various Statusnet sites, or Woodwind, or etc.
#
KartikPrabhu
what is PUsh?
#
Loqi
PubSub, also known as PubSubHubbub or PuSH is a notification-based protocol for publishing and subscribing to streams and legacy feed files in real time https://indieweb.org/PuSH

tantek: I don't post anything that needs realtime updates at the moment so not for me.
#
KartikPrabhu
i was just confused at the spec emphaising "polling is bad"
#
snarfed
KartikPrabhu: polling may not be bad for you as a small indie site, or single-user reader, but it can definitely be bad (or at least a challenge) for big publishers and big shared reader services (and other apps)
#
snarfed
(the traffic volume)
#
KartikPrabhu
yeah, my argument was that with PuSH the hub has to send "fat pings" or your subscribers will fetch your post almost simultaneously; whereas with polling it is more likely to be randomly timed
#
snarfed
KartikPrabhu: eh you can easily throttle pings (as people mentioned earlier), but you can't throttle other people polling you
#
KartikPrabhu
but then it isn't "realtime" is it?
#
snarfed
(fat pings are also totally doable)
#
snarfed
eh you throttle over seconds or minutes. tradeoff btw realtime "enough" vs load
#
KartikPrabhu
fair enough, in any case this all seems theoretical to me at the moment. maybe because I haven't run into this issue
#
snarfed
right! like i mentioned, as a small indie site or user of a self-hosted reader, the only value of push to you (if any) is the realtime part
#
snarfed
avoiding polling is more for other user types
#
KartikPrabhu
yeah that makes sense
#
KartikPrabhu
snarfed: as a curiousity would it be easier if Twitter sent PuSH notifications to Bridgy?
#
KartikPrabhu
rather than the "adapted frequency" polling you seem to be doing
#
snarfed
sure! bridgy actually did use twitter realtime for a while
#
snarfed
but you need a stream per user, and twitter doesn't really support that over ~100 users
#
snarfed
so we had to stop

#
KartikPrabhu
I suppose the one use-case for me would be to send a PuSH to Bridgy when I post something so I don't have to tell it to crawl everytime
#
snarfed
KartikPrabhu: you mean you go push the "crawl now" button every time you post?!?
#
KartikPrabhu
no only sometimes, because my posting is very infrequent so Bridgy waits a long time
#
KartikPrabhu
so more like a "convenience" and not "use-case"
#
snarfed
"poll now" is a simple post, you could definitely automate that if you want
#
snarfed
er simple POST
#
KartikPrabhu
yeah haven't automated any POSSE/Bridgy stuff yet
