I take your point about big problems and there are many. This particular one is currently propping up several multi million and billion dollar businesses and is germaine to the topic of webmention. Some of the hyperbole may be overboard however.

#
tantek
chrisaldrich - definitely germane to one of many things webmention *can* address - but I'm skeptical about that as an introduction or even part of an overview. it would work well as a specific "webmention and ...."
#
tantek
an overview / summary really should be 1) as short / simple as possible, 2) target specifically the uses/advantages that are the *most* compelling to users who can adopt it quickly
#
tantek
From what I've seen of various demos/talks about Webmention, the most compelling thing users see is all the responses to their posts coming back in one stream to their own site (POSSE/backfeed integration, typically through Bridgy)
#
tantek
s/users see/users react to
#
tantek
this is why the screenshots that aaronpk added to the /Webmention implementations are so key
#
[chrisaldrich]
That seems like a gen 1 first approach that I agree with, but to some extent I also want to target gen 3 to put pressure on the other end as an aspirational goal even if they can't implement at all right now.
#
tantek
chrisaldrich IMO gen 3 reads even less than gen 1 - so you need *even shorter text* for them
#
snarfed
agreed, people regularly tell me this bridgy screenshot is more useful to new users than anything else in the docs: https://brid.gy/about#what
#
tantek
gen 3 is motivated by infographics and pretty flow charts, to be blunt
#
tantek
^^^ yes this
#
tantek
that kind of screenshot does better marketing for Webmention than any long paragraphs of prose
#
[chrisaldrich]
That's why I'm trying to spend some time on diagrams as well, sadly not there yet

[chrisaldrich]: right, and/or a blog post on your site first!
#
tantek
snarfed, right. short of a rewrite, my goal with /Webmention and /Webmention-developer is to incrementally improve the /Webmention towards being more user-centric (by moving/saving the dev-centric stuff), without having to rewrite the whole thing. where each incremental edit moves it in that direction

I blame aaronpk for the inspiration since he took / uploaded / added all those screenshots

tantek: the more days I spend building the web + tools, I come back to a comment you made in 2014- I think you could be right about innovation and complexity of protocols (i.e. email) ;)
#
tantek
bnvk - something about complexity of protocols being bad? or?
#
[chrisaldrich]
tantek: now that /Webmention is a recommendation, perhaps it may now be more worthwhile on that page moving the IndieWeb examples to the bottom of the page or a separate page? I suspect that there are far, far more people using it than are listed there currently, and as new people join in (and it becomes de-rigueur) eventually that section begins to signal less value as newcomers won't know that there are more using it than are listed? Put ano
#
[chrisaldrich]
more visitors are likely there for the details (currently at the bottom) than the examples.
#
tantek
Put ano?
#
tantek
message cut-off from Slack to IRC?
#
tantek
speaking of writing shorter prose ;)
#
[chrisaldrich]
Put another way, more visitors are likely there for the details (currently at the bottom) than the examples.
#
tantek
chrisaldrich - I partially agree. The long list of examples is not as important per se, but would still be great to move to /Webmention-developer in total, because it provides some incentive to participate, add yourself with a screenshot of how good your Webmentions look on your site
#
tantek
however I disagree about *some* examples vs. details
#
tantek
perhaps one of the most common mistakes about specs and other documentation is when they dive into details WITHOUT first providing compelling examples
#
tantek
motivation (compelling examples) is more important than more information (details)
#
tantek
also, it's typically premature to solve "eventually ... " type problems on a wiki, because you can just wait til they actually become a problem, and in the meanwhile solve *immediate* problems first, intead of "eventually" problems.
funwhilelost joined the channel
#
tantek
chrisaldrich, for example, for webmention, one such "immediate" problem is how hard it is to get a WordPress setup working (i.e. send, receive, display webmentions as nice as snarfed's screenshot)
#
tantek
that's something that we still desperately need to improve, so that when a random newcomer (who more than likely uses WordPress today) shows up and likes what they see / hear about Webmention (snarfed's screenshot), they have a direct and simple path to adoption (install this one "WordPress Webmention" plugin, add your social media accounts to it and Bridgy and you're done)
#
[chrisaldrich]
not seeing snarfed's screenshot... where is it?
#
[chrisaldrich]
The tougher part of the WordPress part is the vastly differing abilities of users coming in the door, though I've got a few ideas about fixing some of it.
#
[chrisaldrich]
I've been mulling over writing a IndieWeb on WordPress for Dummies book recently... things now seem stable enough that future revisions won't be required on a monthly basis now too...
#
tantek
chrisaldrich really you feel things are stable enough? I still feel there's the big problem that a new user has to install *multiple* plugins to do anything useful with Webmention
#
tantek
that seems really wrong from a usability perspective
#
tantek
also that seems independent of "vastly differing abilities of users coming in "
#
tantek
nobody got time to hassle with multiple plugins where one simple one would do
#
[chrisaldrich]
Oh, they could certainly be much better from a usability perspective and there are too many plugins, which creates cognitive dissonance for many, but for a gen 2 user who can set up a WP site and install a plugin, it's certainly doable.
#
tantek
chrisaldrich having tried several times at IWC/HWCs to direct new WordPress users to our wiki pages and seeing failure, and frankly, failing even myself trying to help them, I'm so not convinced of that
#
tantek
At this point if a new WordPress user has no real investment in WP (e.g. no custom themes etc.) my current recommendation for fastest path to indieweb capable site is: 1) export from WP, 2) install Known, 3) import into Known
#
snarfed
honestly even just having the webmention and semantic linkbacks plugins separate has never made any sense to me
#
tantek
seriously seems simpler / easier than the massive cognitive load of trying to figure out which set of WordPress plugins to install and how to configure them all
#
snarfed
haven't managed to convince them to merge yet, but really they should
#
tantek
snarfed 100% agreed
#
tantek
I'm hoping GWG and pfefferly have a plan for merging them
#
[chrisaldrich]
I think some of the trouble is the number of different functionalities all these plugins offer. Overcoming what they are to start is the first hurdle. Installing everything to make it happen is another.
#
tantek
pfefferle
#
[chrisaldrich]
And therein lies a small issue of indieweb dogfooding. Once one has something that works for them, some of the value of shining the chrome for the potential thousands of others just isn't there.
#
snarfed
eh we have a steady stream of newcomers who complain that wordpress is confusing. it's very consistently visible. not out of sight, out of mind.
#
tantek
this is so not "shining the chrome"!!!
#
tantek
every additional plugin is a maintenance task
#
tantek
s/task/tax :P
#
[chrisaldrich]
You're preaching to the choir, but I also know the realities of some of the work to merge them all together.
#
[chrisaldrich]
Eventually we'll also get to a point where more hands make lighter work too...
#
tantek
this does not seem like a more hands issue
#
tantek
this seems like a 1-3 dedicated sets of hands digging in and doing the hard work of merging everything needed for Webmentions to "just work" (per screenshots) into one plugin
#
tantek
speaking of sooner problems first - hey newsletter day!

#
tantek
chrisaldrich that's a really good insight! My statement of about protocols and complexity is definitely a specific instance of MCs broader concept of "flow" (which I still haven't been able to finish reading ?)
#
tantek
(for someone who understands "flow", he really isn't very good at writing in a "flowing" manner)

what confuses me about that Facebook data ruling is how the hell does in Bellingham, WA justify data about protestors talking about a protest in another state?
#
tantek
chrisaldrich - that "flow" book is yet another good example of the failure of too much prose before an explanatory diagram

It is generally held the Friday of LFNW, I was thinking they could email some of their exhibitors who might have an empty office that day and some availability the day before.
#

I really should have gRegorLove ^ 'ed that

I think there's still a way to install any appengine app on Google apps for your domain, but it was always a convoluted process.
#
snarfed
[kevinmarks]: afaik that was mostly just for custom domain support. now they're pretty much orthogonal. you can use google login, accept accounts on any domain, and limit to specific domain(s) if you want

Webmention.herokuapp.com is good for webmention demos, as it updates the comments on a static page dynamically
#
[kevinmarks]
Right, but I was thinking about deployment paths. It's easy to add Blogger to gafyd, but harder to add known or any non Google one.
#
snarfed
[kevinmarks]: i guess my point is, i don't think "adding X to google apps" really means anything any more, since anything can use google login and limit to specific domain(s).

GWG: I'll try to spend some time re-reading it/them then.

Chrisaldrich, I am working on bugfixes and minor enhancements in Webmentions and Semantic Linkbacks, so I am looking at how they could go together.
#
GWG
Hello, tantek
#
tantek
odd - the IWC Bellingham description is just "LinuxFest Northwest (LFNW) is an annual Spring FLOSS conference in Bellingham, WA."
#
tantek
GWG, the sooner that the features in "Semantic Linkbacks" can be merged into the Webmentions Plugin, the better.
#
tantek
whatever it takes
#
tantek
it could even be a brand new Webmentions Responses plugin if it's too much of a hassle to upgrade the existing Webmentions plugin
#
GWG
tantek, as said, not as straight forward as I would like, but I intend to knock down issues one by one.
#
tantek
just as long as it is ONE plugin that does all that as described
#
GWG
It isn't that. The issue is WordPress design
#
tantek
that makes no sense - why would WordPress design be blocking you from merging two plugins into one?!?

[dgold]
snarfed it's just that following the link on the page you linked takes you to 'google cloud compute' page, which is why I asked.
#
GWG
tantek, it isn't. It is trying to find an implementation that satisfies the concerns. I am working through that. Now that I have worked through some other plugins
#
snarfed1
[dgold]: ah thanks! old link, will update

Generated the final version of the newsletter! This will be sent out at 3pm Pacific time. https://indieweb.org/this-week/2017-03-10.html
#
GWG
tantek, just doing it as it exists now would take ten minutes.
#
GWG
I did that work months ago
#
tantek
GWG I think perhaps it is underestimated how much of an impact that simpler packaging (i.e. *one WP Webmentions plugin*) would have
#
tantek
newsletter is looking pretty good
#
tantek
now seeing if any of the new pages could be improved since they'll presumably get a bump in first time readers
#
GWG
Agreed, but I respect pfefferle as the author. I intend to work on improving the code to the point his objection is removed.
#
tantek
if anyone is up for it, /anchor.fm still needs an improved definition, something about audio silo / aggregator rather than "radio" app.
#
tantek
GWG, while that's taking many months to do, we're losing nearly every "newbie" WordPress person that shows up wanting webmention functionality
#
GWG
I have no objection to maintaining a unified package.
#
tantek
which frankly, I don't think either of you want to see happen
#
tantek
the losing newbies that is
#
GWG
That might be an interim solution.
#
tantek
so please consider building, selfdogfooding, and releasing that integrated singular plugin you said took you (would take you?) 10 minutes to build
#
tantek
I bet you'd find others here (chrisaldrich?) who would help try it out also
#
tantek
and give you usability etc. feedback
#
tantek
what is continuous deploy?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "continuous deploy" yet. Would you like to create it?
#
tantek
hmm wrong channel
#
GWG
tantek, I separated the functionality so I could just include the pieces in a new plugin. So it would be two plugins in one.
#
tantek
yay newsletter POSSE tweet looks good!

I suppose the thing I'm thinking of is "buy a domain, deploy a thing on it, have it work" which appengine felt like it almost had.
#
snarfed1
[kevinmarks]: totally. that's much better in app engine now that it doesn't go through google apps. it's also pretty good on lots of other platforms too though :P
#
[kevinmarks]
Maybe the way to it is the other way round, starting with the thing, and getting a domain when you are happy
#
[kevinmarks]
Ok, I'll try it again.
#
[kevinmarks]
Gomix seems like another pass at this
#
tantek
what is Gomix?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "Gomix" yet. Would you like to create it?
#
[kevinmarks]
The "classic appengine" vs "cloud appengine" split does not help
#
[kevinmarks]
Nor does the giant shruggie that is the auth story
#
snarfed1
eh. both true, both unrelated to domain.

hmm - wrestling with what to do with person-tags on a multi-photo, now that IG supports person-tags *per photo* in a multi-photo post
