Yeah, there's a "Back to Classic" button under settings after you switch

It looks like we don't have a page for "memory hole" yet. Would you like to create it?

jjuran - haven't seen that term used in any UX anywhere - where did you see it? conceptual? or in an actual UI?

sknebel and I have spoken about how often check-ins should be done for them to make sense. And people who were checking in to every train stop. But I totally get the usecase now! I've seen my GPS fail several times on the Berlin U-Bahn so I found myself checking in to at least the start and end stations so I would be able to recreate my trip.

Zegnat: interesting point. I normally can do that with a map, but it might make it easier
#
Zegnat
I don't know Berlin. I will just see my GPS disappear and reappear with no clue. Would require finding closest stations and lines. Having the check in solves the busy work.

something we talked about yesterday evening: aaronpk showed his stories implementation. Would a "reader" for those happen if more ppl published them, or would providng a machine readable variant of them mean people would use readers that don't respect the ephemeral design and break the idea behind it all?
#
aaronpk
I was thinking about that
#
aaronpk
I mean you can always screenshot Instagram stories. I don't think the ephemerality of it is a security thing
#
sknebel
we know that silos aren't technically ephemeral as well (at the last level, screenshots are a thing people take, or see snapchat leaks), but still the UI is an important part of the experience
#
sknebel
and e.g. would you put out a normal feed of them, or would you use some other mechanism that does *something* different so do not just put that in my feedreader and get them all archived? or is it my fault if I don't get the experience you intended because I use a reader following the wrong model?
#
sknebel
weird overlap between UI, social convention (most people treat things presented as ephemeral as such, at least most of the time) and tech
#
aaronpk
I think the other aspects are more critical than the ephemerality: not receiving or showing comments, and not having a permanent url
#
sknebel
interesting
#
aaronpk
theres no way for someone to refer to a past item in the story except for screenshotting it and posting it themselves
#
sknebel
*f5* or link to the image file that's still online
#
sknebel
but the "you can't refer to it easily" (and as a consequence "can't easily send *you* a message/feedback about it") is an interesting aspect
#
aaronpk
I should probably make my image URLs expire too
#
aaronpk
That would force a reader to copy the image if they really wanted to see it after the 24h
[chrisaldrich] joined the channel
#
[chrisaldrich]
I think Instagram's stories were originally mean to copy/allow them to compete with Snap chat, but the disappearing thing now seems to be more about FOMO (aka fear of missing out) and drives repeat eyeballs to their service on a regular basis.
#
[chrisaldrich]
I think it also separates the people who want their IG feed to be "well manicured" places of "beauty" while the stories are an easy way to document the throw-away photos they don't want living around forever.
#
[chrisaldrich]
By way of comparison, iIt allows people to have the messiness of the old MySpace while still maintaining the crispness of the Facebook UI.

Instagram does allow sending a private photo or message response to a story. Messenger allows that too, and also allows sending a private reacji in response.

has there been any brainstorming on the 'star-rating' paradigm?
#
sknebel
dgold: in what context? visitors leaving a rating on your stuff?
#
dgold
no - as in rating things on review
#
dgold
i'm finding the star-ratings I've been giving books, say, to be horribly restrictive, fitting the needs of merchants as opposed to readers
#
dgold
I mean, a three-star rating - what does that mean?
#
aaronpk
what is a review?
#
Loqi
h-review is the microformats2 vocabulary for marking up review posts on web sites https://indieweb.org/review

#
dgold
e.g. Goodreads has the stars as meaning "did not like it", "it was ok", "liked it", "really liked it" & "it was amazing"

#
aaronpk
that sounds like good research
#
aaronpk
I did a whole writeup of the amazon review UI https://indieweb.org/Amazon_Reviews

There was some discussion of thumbs up/down for Netflix several weeks ago, though I'm not sure it was documented into the wiki at the time.
#
dgold
hmmm, how can I screen-grab alt-text?

usually the keyboard shortcut for full screen capture grabs it

decent. I'm at W3C TPAC, and at lunchtime I challenged the Web Payments Working Group to come up with an example of their tech with a UX at least as good as tantek.com/pay :D
#
aaronpk
oh this should be good
#
tantek
yeah good times
#
tantek
aaronpk and that's without the paymount amount param! (might have to build/deploy that this week :) )
#
tantek
aaronpk have you thought about also specifying the "reason" or what it is "for" or alternate verbs for "pay" in the payment URL?
#
tantek
(specifically the UX of sharing such URLs)

hm i like it
#
aaronpk
that wouldn't get transferred over to the payment processor, but at least it would make the payment request screen look a little nicer
#
aaronpk
at that point it starts acting very similar to an invoice!
#
aaronpk
in which case, I might want to actually save that text to be able to refer to it later
#
aaronpk
which is starting to sound like creating a payment request *post*
#
GWG
Well, a payment request is fulfilled by a payment fulfillment.
#
tantek
aaronpk I added a bit to brainstorming about this
#
tantek
are you sure it wouldn't get transferred over? I thought both Venmo and Paypal had the ability to specify reason, at least in the UI they do - so it's a question as to whether a link can auto-fill that
