what is packaging?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "packaging" yet. Would you like to create it? https://indieweb.org/s/111s (Or just say "packaging is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
tantek
sounds like a bunch of plumbing dev talk right? or did I miss how it's relevant to the user (besides the usual "AMP bad for the web")
#
Loqi
misses how it too
#
tantek
gives Loqi a web package
#
Loqi
investigates the web package
#
KartikPrabhu
tantek: yes lots of unnecessary plumbing
#
KartikPrabhu
but also a user problem since AMP is being pushed pretty hard
#
tantek
but none of the packaging affects that
#
tantek
or other plumbing details

The packaging proposal is the usual "we need signing" bullshit when "we need verifiable hashes" is sufficient AFAIKT
#
[kevinmarks]
Hashing is "you can check this is the same bytes as we sent"
#
[kevinmarks]
Signing is "you can get a chain of dubious assertions that we had to pay people to create that theoretically confirms that the hash came from us"
#
tantek
[kevinmarks], packaging & hashing -> #indieweb-dev plz
#
tantek
and signing too
#
tantek
none of that is relevant details to a user

why is he doing that?

because some tool on the web auto-generated it for him

that's a silly basis for an attack on favicon

agreed dgold
#
Zegnat
All that markup might be obsolete within a short time anyway. I expect bookmarking to start pulling the icon from the manifest file.

calumryan: tantek left you a message 1 week, 5 days ago: is HWC London on for the 10th January? https://indieweb.org/events/2018-01-10-homebrew-website-club#London
#
Zegnat
Hi London!
#
KartikPrabhu
twitter's new "thread" ordering is weird. If you reply to your own tweet it bubbles to the top while the rest of the replies are in chronological order below it https://twitter.com/meyerweb/status/950843654507237378
#
@meyerweb
Is it possible to calculate the leg lengths of an isosceles triangle from the height (h) and apex angle (a), and nothing else? Everything I find online assumes you start with the leg lengths. Pointers welcome!
(twtr.io/1_M4eR_C1Vd)
#
gRegorLove
It's been like that for a while, but yeah it's confusing.
#
KartikPrabhu
gRegorLove: by "for a while" you mean since the "thread"/"tweetstorm" feature or even before that?
#
skippy
has anyone used Miniflux 2.x yet? the switch from PHP to golang is interesting. curious if folks have any experience with it.
#
gRegorLove
I've seen on several popular RTs where the original author replies to the original after a certain RT threshold with "now that I have you here, check out [my project] or [this charity] etc." because their reply shows up near the top.
#
KartikPrabhu
what is miniflux?
#
Loqi
Miniflux is minimalist feed reader software https://indieweb.org/Miniflux
#
KartikPrabhu
gRegorLove: interesting. I am surprised I never noticed
#
gRegorLove
KartikPrabhu: Not familiar with the thread/tweetstorm. The "Add a tweet" button? I've seen it before that, I think.
#
gRegorLove
Yeah, the add a tweet button.
#
gRegorLove
That's a bummer about miniflux. Guess I can remove that from my things to try.
#
skippy
gRegorLove: why so?
#
aaronpk
oh hey there's a release of the new version out
#
gRegorLove
I don't know Go. I'm on Dreamhost too, which I don't think offers Go
#
aaronpk
with Go, it's released as a binary, so you don't need to know about Go at all, as long as you can run the binary
#
skippy
it's a single Go binary.
#
aaronpk
whether that's something you can do on dreamhost I am not sure
#
skippy
unless your specific interest was in tinkering with it, rather than just using it.
#
skippy
vultr.com has cheapo VPS hosting on which you could run it.
#
gRegorLove
I was also more interested in it because I'd started adding mf2 support to picoFeed
#
Zegnat
I also lost interest when they switched to go. In my case because I was going to tinker with what feeds they support.
#
Zegnat
Also sad that this means yet another RSS feed parser library goes unsupported :(
#
Loqi
[miniflux] miniflux-legacy: Minimalist RSS reader (version 1.x)
#
Zegnat
I might end up forking. But it is less attractive if I am the only maintainer.
#
aaronpk
I am considering maintaining the parser library since I use it in XRay
#
aaronpk
but i'd much rather just find some other one that is maintained
#
gRegorLove
what is simplepie?
#
Loqi
SimplePie is a feed parser library written in PHP, which supports h-feed parsing as of version 1.4 https://indieweb.org/SimplePie

I remember Maciej writing big chunks of the svg code years ago. The other irony is that none of the current iPhones are pixel for pixel any more, so you're targetting an exact pixel size that will be scaled before display.
