#GWGPlease apologize to snarfed about me messing up his site
#j12tBy general agreement, 1 million web mentions is something very worthwhile partying about.
#j12tThe thought is that every homebrew website club, or Indie Web event world-wide could have their own party, celebrating the same thing
#j12tAnd that we could contact a few journalists and bloggers before the parties so we can get some coverage
#j12tThe page I just created has some of the "talking points".
#j12tKnow some journalists who might be interested? Let's coordinate over the next 24 hours on what what we tell them the story is (my strawman is on the wiki, feel free to edit/augment) and who we can contact.
#j12tWho's interested in doing bit of PR instead of PHP bug fixing? :-)

#aaronpkthankfully flickr maps pretty well to my idea

#aaronpki think really the only major thing it's missing for me is storing the RAW format
#jeremycherfasI'm OK with that, because I use Flickr mostly as a public portfolio and manage the photos locally. I'm working on thinking about a changed workflow, though, to prepare for the end of Aperture.
#aaronpki just don't have a local archive of my photos anymore o.O
#aaronpk[mlopatka]: i use backblaze for backups, but it's not about just keeping files, it's an issue of how to organize them and find them
#aaronpki was running this a few years ago which downloaded a complete local copy of my flickr data and kept it up to date, but i need to do a bunch of work to make it work again https://github.com/aaronpk/Flickr-Archiver
#Loqi[aaronpk] Flickr-Archiver: Backs up your entire Flickr stream to a local site.
#[mlopatka]aaronpk ah nice! this seems like a great solution. I’ve been toying with the idea of using Amazon glacier for the massive amount of photos that did not make the cut for Flickr, but indeed the organization, searching, retrieval, etcs is a huge effort
#aaronpkthese days if I do a massive shoot that generates tons of photos that I don't end up doing anything with, I am just okay with deleting them
#aaronpki process the set to publish a few of them, and just realize that I'm not going to ever touch the originals again anyway
#[mlopatka]yeah, I hesitate to pull the trigger, even though I know it is the rational thing to do… its easy to be a digital packrat 🙂
#[mlopatka]better to keep TBs of photos on disk for that one time I’ll want to find a picture from that trip that time
#sknebelfor now, disks get bigger than my photo archive, so I don't mind the packrat aspect too much
#sknebel(although there certainly are things I could remove, e.g. alternative source images for shoots where the right one has been selected, edited and printed years ago
#petermolnarbut that's tricky: 25GB disks are a bit too small, 50GB is expensive, 100GB is impossible to get and _very_ expensive besides the fact that verbatim is unreliable
#petermolnarand panasonic is near-impossible to get in europe (100GB)
#petermolnarpretty inconvenient and uncomfortable as well, but at least you don't have to pay rent
#petermolnarwhich is why I don't like billing based archival services

#jeremycherfasI have become much happier about deleting forever images that have not made the cut first time around.

#skippyif you're an Amazon Prime subscriber, Amazon Prime Photos seems pretty decent for long-term storage. It's not got an API, but for a digital dumping ground it works well enough.

#j12ttantek snarfed: is there a pointer to the 1 million number and where it came from somewhere?
#snarfedj12t: no complete blog post yet. it comes from 960k bridgy (https://brid.gy/#stats) + 25k webmention.io (aaronpk in IRC 1w ago or so) + projected 5-10k each for hosted known and webmention.herokuapp.com
#j12tsnarfed: we need to write this up somewhere so that writers we talked to about this have a "reference" for the news.
#schmartychrisaldrich: i'm open to ideas on how to celebrate! we have an optional dinner on friday, and no official events planned for saturday evening.
#aaronpkwonders when the millionth Micropub post will be created
#chrisaldrichschmarty, Maybe do it at lunch when you've got everyone. Printing a poster to go along with the group photo might also be an easy thing to do for the celebration.
#chrisaldrichOr at least will be a lot of people in the photo for potential news stories...
#snarfedre reporters, i think scott rosenberg has been to one or more IWCs before too. glad he's on there
#j12tOn the list of press contacts listed on https://indieweb.org/press-kit, is this list still accurate? E.g. I haven't heard of Shane in a while, but that might just be me.
#snarfedi haven't even tried to guess how big the long tail is, ie how many purely site to site wms have been sent, that didn't go through any big service...but maybe another 5k ish?
#tantekooh I like this kind of pre-posting to get people excited about it
#tanteknow that's good PR strategy. like movie teasers
#ZegnatOh, I totally forgot about /press-kit as a page. Wonder if I should add myself as a contact.
#j12ttantek: IMHO media training is overrated, however, as the news shows every day, one should not go on the record without a very clear plan what to say and what not :-)
#tantekj12t you're particularly media savvy, so it may be overrated for you :)
#tantekI'd say media training is essential if you a) haven't had practice or b) haven't had lots of experience talking to reporters and seeing what they actually report
#[colinwalker]snarfed I like to think that 5K is a bit conservative god peer to peer
#tantekthere's lots of common mistakes that "geeks" (developers especially) make when talking to press
#LoqiIt looks like we don't have a page for "posts table" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "posts table is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#Loqi[superfeedr] "Liked: 1 Million Webmentions | snarfed.org...
Ryan reports that we have likely passed the “1 million webmentions sent” mark which is a brilliant milestone and achievement.
As he explains, while there are a few larger services, such as webmention.io and Bridgy, the very idea behind webmentions is that they don’t require a central conduit. They are designed to be point to point, directly from one site to another, so the actual number could be higher.
