Party!
#
j12t
Did somebody say party? Yes, we did, at Homebrew Website Club in San Francisco today.
#
j12t
By general agreement, 1 million web mentions is something very worthwhile partying about.
#
j12t
The thought is that every homebrew website club, or Indie Web event world-wide could have their own party, celebrating the same thing
#
j12t
And that we could contact a few journalists and bloggers before the parties so we can get some coverage
#
j12t
The page I just created has some of the "talking points".
#

Know some journalists who might be interested? Let's coordinate over the next 24 hours on what what we tell them the story is (my strawman is on the wiki, feel free to edit/augment) and who we can contact.

I think I am going to keep letting Google manage my photos for me this year.
#
jeremycherfas
Unless Flickr beats you to it.
#
petermolnar
managing photos is still a PITA to be honest
#
petermolnar
I've attempted to sync my complete list of photos to flickr, just to outsource some of the issues, but in the end, I canceled the process
#
jeremycherfas
Part of the problem, I think, is that so many people have such different ideas of what "managing photos" means.

#
aaronpk
i think really the only major thing it's missing for me is storing the RAW format
#
jeremycherfas
I'm OK with that, because I use Flickr mostly as a public portfolio and manage the photos locally. I'm working on thinking about a changed workflow, though, to prepare for the end of Aperture.

aaronok, do you use a cold storage service?
#

or all in Flickr?
#
aaronpk
[mlopatka]: i use backblaze for backups, but it's not about just keeping files, it's an issue of how to organize them and find them
#
aaronpk
i was running this a few years ago which downloaded a complete local copy of my flickr data and kept it up to date, but i need to do a bunch of work to make it work again https://github.com/aaronpk/Flickr-Archiver
#
Loqi
[aaronpk] Flickr-Archiver: Backs up your entire Flickr stream to a local site.
#
[mlopatka]
aaronpk ah nice! this seems like a great solution. I’ve been toying with the idea of using Amazon glacier for the massive amount of photos that did not make the cut for Flickr, but indeed the organization, searching, retrieval, etcs is a huge effort
#
aaronpk
these days if I do a massive shoot that generates tons of photos that I don't end up doing anything with, I am just okay with deleting them
#
aaronpk
i process the set to publish a few of them, and just realize that I'm not going to ever touch the originals again anyway
#
[mlopatka]
yeah, I hesitate to pull the trigger, even though I know it is the rational thing to do… its easy to be a digital packrat 🙂
#
[mlopatka]
better to keep TBs of photos on disk for that one time I’ll want to find a picture from that trip that time
#
sknebel
for now, disks get bigger than my photo archive, so I don't mind the packrat aspect too much
#
sknebel
(although there certainly are things I could remove, e.g. alternative source images for shoots where the right one has been selected, edited and printed years ago
#
petermolnar
I've tried all; flickr, flickr sync, glacier, self-hosted
#
petermolnar
ended up with self-hosted, as that's still the most cost-efficient and convenient (all heil rsync)
#
petermolnar
also blu-ray
#
petermolnar
but that's tricky: 25GB disks are a bit too small, 50GB is expensive, 100GB is impossible to get and _very_ expensive besides the fact that verbatim is unreliable
#
petermolnar
and panasonic is near-impossible to get in europe (100GB)
#
petermolnar
pretty inconvenient and uncomfortable as well, but at least you don't have to pay rent
#
petermolnar
which is why I don't like billing based archival services
