For the sake of becoming more "indieweb" I'm looking for a good way to aggregate RSS feeds that I follow on my website. I've tried some Wordpress plugins, but they are creating ugly results and are not very satisfying. I'm looking for a good, open source, self hosted solution that is has some eye candy and allows to make the aggregated feed me to share some aggregated feeds publicly and other feeds only privately. I'm very
#
camb[m]
interested in any suggestion people here have.
#
camb[m]
it looks like years ago everything had an rss feed. Now they a re few and far inbetween.
#
camb[m]
I was a big fan of rss about 8 years ago. I kind of lost interest, but now I'm back. And there's tumbleweeds.
#
camb[m]
oops.
#
camb[m]
*I'm looking for a good, open source, self hosted solution that is has some eye candy and allows me to share some aggregated feeds publicly and other feeds only privately.
#
aaronpk
that's one of my goals with Monocle actually
#
aaronpk
it's not limited to RSS though, so that it works with all the fun post types like photos and checkins
#
aaronpk
it's also not nearly done enough for anyone else to use it, so yuo'll have to wait a while longer sorry :)

What is feed reader?
#
Loqi
A feed reader is an application (local or on the web, like the defunct Google Reader) that subscribes to feeds (typically legacy Atom & RSS) and presents them in an interface for reading https://indieweb.org/feed_reader
#
camb[m]
That's too bad :)
#
gRegorLove
Some options on that page^.
#
aaronpk
the republishing bit is not a common feature of traditional feed readers
#
gRegorLove
Oh, I missed that
#
camb[m]
by "share some aggregated feeds publicly" I meant just to allow others to view it online. Not necessarily to republish a a new feed.
#
camb[m]
That's a pretty cool bot.
#
camb[m]
gRegorLove: Thank you.

#
gRegorLove
camb[m], Sort of like you find a post in a feed reader and want to repost it on your site to share with friends?
#
gRegorLove
If so, Woodwind supports micropub to (re)post directly to your site.
#
gRegorLove
It also does likes and replies (comments)
#
camb[m]
gRegorLove_: Not really repost. I would like to combine different rss feeds to read for myself. (eyecandy important) Some of these feeds should be password protected because I don't want all my feeds to be public. Some feed combinations I would like to make public so my friends and I can see the same aggregated feed on my website.
#
camb[m]
likes and replies sounds like a plus for Woodwind.
#
camb[m]
That sounds like something new for an rss reader.
snarfed joined the channel
#
gRegorLove
Ah, yeah I don't know of a solution that does all of that, but several different pieces could be achieved in some different ways.
#
gRegorLove
Woodwind is basically a stream of posts, less line an inbox-style reader. It has tags, so you could group feeds that way. It's all private, though, can't currently share a feed or tagged feeds *from* it
#
gRegorLove
*less like
#
camb[m]
Does it include thumbnails of posts in the stream? that's pretty important to me.
#
gRegorLove
No, just whatever is in the feed. If a post has a featured image, that shows up in the content of the post.
#
camb[m]
You know. I want that facebook feeling. ashamed-emoji
#
gRegorLove
You can sign in to woodwind.xyz with your domain and try it out.

Very good article from my friend @Johannes_Ernst about the importance of digital ownership for small businesses. Vast amount of translation needs to happen from engineering conversation to frustrations and concerns of groups like small business owners. https://www.godaddy.com/garage/indieweb-facebook-opportunities/

I just got a Twitter notification that several folks I’m following liked a photo from someone I’m not following.

Not in my timeline — in Notifications.

this question is brought up in the context of indie readers all the time. If there is no central place how do we find/get recommendations for new people to follow

hot off the presses, feel free to mention at HWCs: best current estimates are that we're currently sending ~929 new webmentions per day, and we hit the 1M mark around 2017-12-27. methodology in https://snarfed.org/1-million-webmentions

jjuran: that’s why I created a directory listing everyone who has sent a webmention to my site as well as a traditional blogroll. Anything to aid discovery and because they’ve sent a webmention they have to be indieweb.
#
aaronpk
oh is that how yours works? clever
#
[colinwalker]
The /directory page, yeah. It just cycles through mentions in the database and lists everyone (pulling the info from the semantic linkbacks stuff)
#
[colinwalker]
AlthoughI have limited it to those with valid rss/atom.json feeds to I could build an OPML
#
[colinwalker]
*rss/atom/json
#
[colinwalker]
actually - not json

that will work great until we start seeing an uptick in webmention spam
