Actually, I love SMS, haha
#
tantek
SMS fails internationally
#
tantek
nope, experience
#
tantek
gave up trying to keep it working years ago when I traveled intl
#
petermolnar
the last time my internation SMS failed was in 2001
#
Zegnat
SMS has never failed us internationally for over a decade.
#
sknebel
somehow I think convincing parents to give *more* mobile internet access to their kids is at the very least going to be difficult
#
tantek
sknebel: no the opposite is true. many parents already rather give kids iPods only with wifi, rather than iPhones
#
Zegnat
Current me is mostly biased because mobile internet is far from a guaranteed thing here. And not even having WiFi to rely on at home makes things very iffy.
#
tantek
(at least for a few years, eventually giving them their own phones)
#
KartikPrabhu
are we again talking US people/parents only!?
#
petermolnar
no, I've seen this in Hungary as well
#
KartikPrabhu

#
petermolnar
wifi is preferred over mobile
#
petermolnar
sort of a limitation to places with internet connection from the parents' point of view
#
sknebel
petermolnar: in the form of devices that are incapable of mobile connections (e.g. SMS)?
#
Zegnat
wonders if this starts to spin towards #indieweb-chat
#
tantek
phone companies are another silo
#
KartikPrabhu
so is Apple no?
#
aaronpk
i think there's a big difference in peoples' experiences between SMS operated by US carriers vs SMS operated by international carriers.
#
singpolyma
I find SMS a useful lowest-common-denominator so I don't have to use a whole bunch of different chat apps for my contacts. I have it all delivered over my data to whatever device I'm using, so it's the same UX for me anywhere I am
#
KartikPrabhu
aaronpk: yes
#
[jgmac1106]
My data yes is US centric. I explained it was with the population I serve which is primarily in New Haven, CT. I have to worry about data caps and no internet at home. Web messages had about a 70% rate SMS had about 97% interaction rate with the parents of children I serve.
#
singpolyma
[jgmac1106]: The problem is that (unless willing to risk a ToS violation not being found beacuse the service is small... something I'm sometimes ok with ;) ) The A2P rules will mean you can't do SMS "subscriptions" unless you use a short code
#
singpolyma
and short codes are mega expensive
#
KartikPrabhu
that ^ went way over my head
#
KartikPrabhu
what is A2P?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "A2P" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "A2P is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
KartikPrabhu
what is short code?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "short code" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "short code is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
singpolyma
A2P is Application to Person messaging, especially in the context of SMS.
#
singpolyma
short code is a proprietary extension to the SMS system supported by most carriers that allow numbers outside the ITU assigned phone number space to be used for certain kinds of SMS applications.
#
KartikPrabhu
hmmm those do sound complicated
#
singpolyma
Basically, to prevent spam/abuse, you're not allowed to send SMS that isn't "person to person" in some vague sense from a normal phone number
#
[jgmac1106]
Make sense we went with ReminHQ and the sign up workflow sounds similar
#
singpolyma
Which is why the twitter "phone number" is 21212 and not a real phone number
#
[jgmac1106]
I would put all the info needed into the message but include a link to the post for more info
#
tantek
I thought the twitter number was 40404
#
tantek
did it change
#
singpolyma
tantek: oh, it may be different in USA? 21212 here anyway
#
tantek
hah that's another problem with SMS then - puts burden on apps / users of remembering different shortcodes for different countries/regions. whereas URLs work worldwide
#
singpolyma
[jgmac1106]: So, basically, it's easy and cheap to do at all. And easy and expensive to do if you follow the letter of the rules. But for a small application you may be fine doing it the cheap way
#
singpolyma
yeah. shortcodes are terrible
#
[jgmac1106]
In terms of devices for kids, yeah I just buy them a burner and nver hook it up. Just use our home wifi
#
[jgmac1106]
I can get a decent mobile device for my kids this way for around $50
#
Loqi
ok, I added "https://www.twilio.com/docs/glossary/what-a2p-sms-application-person-messaging" to a brand new "See Also" section of /A2P https://indieweb.org/wiki/index.php?diff=47036&oldid=47034
#
[jgmac1106]
Sorry, burner is American slang for cell phone using pre paid minutes
#
singpolyma
if you only use wifi, what are the prepaid minutes for?
#
[jgmac1106]
I don't buy them. Just the device. I never hook it up. pre-paid phones are subsidized still
#
[jgmac1106]
Get a Moto E or somethign like 60-70 bucks
#
singpolyma
oh weird. so the carrier will give you a subsidy on a phone if you get a SIM card even if you just take the SIM out and never put time on it?
#
singpolyma
that seems like an oversight, heh
#
[jgmac1106]
or the store, they must mark up the minutes, cell carriers are eveil in US
#
singpolyma
s/in US//
#
singpolyma
at least there's a semblance of a competitive market in USA beacuse of MVNOs etc
#

we don't even have that here :P
