That Velocity GDPR link is another one for the "ethical" group :-)

Zegnat: I don't think ethical should ever be in quotes
#

Maybe not. Just want to make a clear differentiation between the people who are talking about ethics and the people who are talking about lawfulness alone.

yeah, I did get your meaning ;)

One CSS trick I have been trying to master, not sure if it is possible is an image with a border:radius of 50% two outside borders but have the second border be the CC attribution around the image: https://1stwebdesigner.com/set-text-on-a-circle-with-css/

Blogger @iamjeffperry suggested a community of indie bloggers. https://twitter.com/iamjeffpe… That sounds like a good idea. Cc. @c @manton I’m trying to think about this from an #Indieweb perspective: Said community should be Web based: not Slack, ... http://bradfordenslen.com/2018/05/12/blogger-iamjeffperry-suggested.html

Hey IndieWeb family. I write/share a weekly newsletter focused on tech/edu/literacy. Now that I'm finally spending more time building up an "indie web site" I'd like to find a better process to connect my newsletter to my feeds. I'd like to be able to have people share/comment on the newsletter, or parts of it and capture these webmentions on my site.
#
jacky
that's something I've been wondering myself
#
jacky
I use buttondown.email for my newsletter and I was talking with the maker to see if WebMention support could be added
#
aaronpk
i'd flip it the other way around. write the post first on your site as a normal blog post, then use one of the blog-to-email services like mailchimp to turn it into a newsletter
#
aaronpk
treat the email as a distribution channel of your blog posts
#
[wiobyrne]
I currently have two sites, both running on WordPress. My newsletter is currently through MailChimp. I don't know if I should copy/paste the newsletter to a post on my site and send it out...or have the individual "stories" in the newsletter be links to my site.
#
[wiobyrne]
I could write up the newsletter as a blog post, and then send it out through the blog...and the newsletter feed/list.
#
[wiobyrne]
I tried copy/pasting the newsletter over to Medium to draw more attention, but I'd like to have it live/archive as a blog post on the site as well. I think that would make it easier for people to follow.
#
GWG
[wiobyrne]: Why don't you reverse it?
#
GWG
[wiobyrne]: The way you are suggesting? The site posts drive the newsletter
#
[wiobyrne]
I'll try writing/sharing it first in WordPress, and then sending it out to the list from there. If anyone has any plugins, or ways to expedite this process...please send along.
#
GWG
[wiobyrne]: Mailchimp supports RSS feeds.
#
[wiobyrne]
I think I might do it that way. I can set up a template in my blog post for the newsletter. And, I would only send out the newsletter post each week through the MailChimp feed.
#
GWG
There are other syndication methods.
#
GWG
I know some people syndicate to Medium from WordPress
#
[wiobyrne]
I already syndicate my WordPress posts to Medium. Writing the newsletter each week in my blog would make my life much easier as it'll syndicate to Medium...and more importantly I'd get all of the IndieWeb special sauce everytime I send it out.
#
[wiobyrne]
I just need to change my process (and figure it out first) to get my posts for the newsletter to go out through MailChimp.
#
[wiobyrne]
Also, if I send the newsletter post from WordPress, out through MailChimp...would that mess up my URLs, and impact webmentions? I need to see if MailChimp will give it a new URL, or keep the one for my blog post.
#
GWG
Mailchimp doesn't have a URL as far as I know
#
[wiobyrne]
@GWG I can modify the URL a bit in MailChimp when I send it out. It gives me something like this - https://mailchi.mp/ac893a1f20df/tldr-142
#
GWG
[wiobyrne]: You can link that in the post using the Syndication Links plugin.

I just wired up mail chimp last week to take my rss feed and send it out as a newsletter. I suspect people responding will be non indieweb and write replies directly.
#
[chrisaldrich]
I may customize the specific feed or set things up so people can choose which categories they receive...
#
[wiobyrne]
Thanks [chrisaldrich], that was brought up by [mrkrndvs]. I'm thinking I'd still get email responses, but I'm wondering what would happen when someone shares/likes/retweets or comments on the link to the newsletter.
#
[wiobyrne]
@GWG good thinking. I will first test out sending the posts from WordPress to MailChimp for delivery. I'll then look at ways to keep the URL the same as my blog post...or perhaps move to a different newsletter service to send it out.
#
[chrisaldrich]
I treat email responses as private though I've been known to add permission to post food ones publicly.
#
[chrisaldrich]
Has GWG mentioned postactive that might be more of what you're looking for?
#
GWG
[chrisaldrich]: Do you mean Postmatic?
#
GWG
I've been trying to move away only because the paid model isn't for me.
#
[chrisaldrich]
Yes, I'm out of the office on my cell with fast fingers and a mediocre memory. :)
#
GWG
[chrisaldrich]: I'd like to find a way to do that locally
#
[wiobyrne]
Is it worth investigating postmatic...or should I look elsewhere?
#
[chrisaldrich]
s/fast/fat case in point
#
[wiobyrne]
I've seen/heard a lot about Buttondown lately. Might investigate it as well.
#
GWG
[wiobyrne]: I like Postmatic. I just am not a commercial customer, so it isnt right for me.
#
GWG
They want $20 a month, and I don't post anywhere so frequently as to need that
#
[wiobyrne]
I have just under 1000 subscribers, so I should be fine, but need to see if the move is worth it.
#
GWG
So, more than me

Even though my newsletter is really a collection of my bookmarks, I kind of like the idea of choosing which ones and actually adding further thoughts that I may have missed the first time around. However, I like your idea [wiobyrne] of posting to WP and linking that to MailChimp. Might investigate. Really don't like publishing in TinyLetter, especially in regards to images.

my goal is to do a modern version of dial-up where I download/upload all my data a 2-a-day
#
[mrkrndvs]
I would really like to create my own custom Post Kind for 'newsletter' too. Need to add that to my projects
#
[wiobyrne]
My dream/goal is to write out posts in a Google Doc (or elsewhere), send it off to WordPress as a post. This would give me a backup of my posts as an archive. Adding the newsletter as posts would make it so much better... for me.
#
[wiobyrne]
Nifty newsletter looks interesting as well.
