@fr3ino
Because of #GDPR, USA Today decided to run a separate version of their website for EU users, which has all the tracking scripts and ads removed. The site seemed very fast, so I did a performance audit. How fast the internet could be without all the junk! 🙄 5.2MB → 500KB https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DeFLgPoWsAAaozG.jpg

I've yet to implement webmentions or any especially dynamic features like that. (I do have weblogin thanks to selfauth! Zegnat++) I'm currently working on a subscriptions page which only I can see where it gives me a feed of content from rss feeds, other indieweb sites and so on. I thought I'd share this because I'm quite proud of it so far. https://davy.tyrrell.co/

#

Are you buying it? I'm not sure that it isn't a "project" of some sort. But I'll suspend judgement for now. And it is definitely entertaining.
#
tantek
jeremycherfas: keep clicking :)

I did. And it was some of the destinations that made me think "project" Like Why did you make it? And the one about Boyfriend pictures.

have to admit my first response when seeing the "packages" was wait a minute, these photos are such good examples, that they could be turned into a "how to" list
#
jeremycherfas
I like too that they knowingly point the conversation to IG.
#
tantek
and Twitter!
#
tantek
jeremycherfas: so here's my question, how do we help folks avoid falling into the same "social media performance life" trap with their own websites?
#
tantek
(I have some ideas, but wanted to ask the question first)

and second question(s): What about the positive side? I have found a lot of positivity from (others') Instagram posts. Is one person's envy another person's inspiration? Where do you draw the line?
#
jeremycherfas
Those are good, interesting and important questions.

One answer might be to downgrade the relentless focus on numbers (of followers, likes, reposts). I think that's a good decision by @manton on m.b.

#
tantek
jeremycherfas: I agree that is good design
#
tantek
are they just not shown, or are they de-emphasized somehow in the UI? and if so, we should capture screenshots to show as examples for others to implement
#
tantek
TBH I rarely pay attention to the # of likes or comments on IG posts that I find inspirational.
#
tantek
Though one feature that has caught my eye is when IG lists other followings that have liked a post you're looking at, that feels more "social", like hey my friends liked this post, perhaps I should look more closely.
#
aaronpk
I do that with foursquare venues alllll the time
#
aaronpk
best indicator that I will like a place when i'm searching
#
aaronpk
"how many of my friends have also checked in there?"
#
davidmead
afternoon all
#
tantek
aaronpk - yeah that's a *major* factor for me when I look at 4sq venues
#
tantek
like I'll go to a lower rated place if more of my friends have been there
#
davidmead
is there an version of OwnYour… for Untappd? I thought I saw one a while ago but can’t find it now
#
tantek
jeremycherfas: perhaps another way to ask the question is to split it into reading and posting halves
#
tantek
i.e. how can you follow things to be inspired, but not made to feel inadequate? (or all the other negative things that article points out)
#
tantek
and how can you post (presumably real) things from your life to inspire others, but not make them feel inadequate?
#
jeremycherfas
I'm not even sure the indicators exist in m.b They certainly are not displayed. Perhaps they can be retrieved from the data.
#
jeremycherfas
Not to get too deep here, but aren't we fast approaching "The only beliefs you can change are your own" territory? All the research on "happiness" and positive psychology suggests that comparison is inbuilt and very hard to overcome. But you can learn how.

#
tantek
I do appreciate the facepiles on indieweb posts though (as distinct from like counts)
#
jeremycherfas
Me too. And the more I get, the better I feel about that post. BUT ... I also devalue likes and reposts from the silos quite considerably compared to actual interaction of some kind.
#
dgold
because a silo interaction is something gamified by the silo designers
#
dgold
whereas a personal site interaction is determined by an internal process
#
tantek
sure, towards their own ends, more views / time with the silo
#
tantek
(silo interactions that is)
#
tantek
dgold, ideally, yes, personal site interactions are more internally driven
#
tantek
trying to figure out how to document some of this on the wiki
#
jeremycherfas
Yes, and the gamification wouldn't work unless we were so predisposed to compare.
#
tantek
no it still works due to dopamine, without comparison
#
jeremycherfas
Im travelling tomorrow (o/ Dublin!) to I may even have time to write something. You've prompted an interesting line of thought tantek.
#
jeremycherfas
What do you suppose triggers the dopamine?
#
jeremycherfas
That's a physiological mechanism, but there are upstream motivators at play that the little drop of dopamine reinforces.
#
tantek
jeremycherfas: my understanding is that all (most?) social interactions, no matter how minor, trigger some dopamine, and thus through inconsistent reinforcement, you can gamify such interactions into being addictive
#
tantek
that is, both the act of one-click *liking* something releases dopamine in the liker, and the notification "your post was liked" releases dopamine in the receiver of the like

this predates social media though. the convenient/efficient email UI of blackberry phones contributed to the term crackberry to describe the emergent behavior
#
jeremycherfas
I think it goes a lot further back than even the crackberry, although that was perhaps an early example of technology making use of what is, I suspect, a long-standing and evolutionarily-selected behaviour.
#
jeremycherfas
I can remember, for example, that receiving a letter from a pen pal made me want to write more.
#
tantek
jeremycherfas: I suspect it goes further back as well, though I think crackberry may have been when the behavior became visible in public
#
jeremycherfas
And I'm sure you will find similar mechanisms in other animals.
#
tantek
s/visible/observable
#
tantek
whereas using your computer at home, playing video games at home, or receiving a letter at home is often a private activity, unnoticeable by others
#
jeremycherfas
I think the main point I want to make, which is tied up in the word "gamification", is that the technologists and others were taking advantage of a deep-seated behaviour pattern, which probably originally had survival value.

yes the "sticking with your group" and "maintaining your social ties" behaviors that were essential to survival when food/water/shelter etc. were scarce and/or required small group cooperative efforts to actually obtain
