[jgmac1106] The wiki page for creating user could be more helpful. It starts off with suggesting creating an h-card. For someone who has started with WordPress, then the Indieweb plugin, they may not know html, they have probably not seen their h-card. I assumed that whatever I wrote had to be in html, there's nothing to indicate otherwise.
#
[Vanessa]
Better if it said, after "edit this page" just type in the editing area, give your name, a bit about yourself etc. Then go into h-cards etc.
#
[Vanessa]
I had no trouble logging in, but it wasn't until [wiobyrne] told me I could just type words in and that would work, that I made any progress, cos I was trying to use html, which I don't really know.

In the past I had a project in which I would share one photo per week and hashtag it #52 weeks. I edited all of these into a movie at the end. Recently, I've been playing with 1 second everyday (https://1se.co/) and I'll edit these into a video at the end. The challenge is that I'd like to have these live on my domain.
#
[wiobyrne]
I lost my photos from my #52pics project as they were all uploaded to TwitPic. These videos for one second everyday are on their servers. I have backups on Google Photos...but...

What is semantic HTML?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "semantic HTML" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "semantic HTML is ____", a sentence describing the term)
leg joined the channel
#
sketchess
Oh, what a rabbit hole........
#
[jgmac1106]
Semantic HTML is the use of HTML markup to capture the meaning of a page rather than relying on the copy, content, and design of a website.
#
KartikPrabhu
sketchess: it only means sensible HTML markup
#
sketchess
I am not a tech pro. I try to understand the microformats wiki. It leaves me with more questions than answers, so far.
#
KartikPrabhu
sketchess: I am not a tech pro either so not to worry about that. Feel free to ask questions about confusing things
#
dougbeal
gRegorLove: How do you load a post in Quill? I couldn't figure it out.
#
dougbeal
gRegorLove: never mind, found it in the wiki
#
jmac
I came home from the Summit reminded that (a) the IW wiki is an amazing resource whose like I've never seen before, and (b) the IW wiki is not a book, and there really oughtta be a book. Or two or three.
#
sketchess
I am kind of confused. I am working with HTML5. ...... POSH is asking for older HTML like XHTML, which I left behind me.
#
KartikPrabhu
sketchess: no POSH is not asking for XHTML. Use whatever HTML you want as it makes sense
#
KartikPrabhu
microformats parsers don't really care if you use HTML5 or XHTML or XML
#
sketchess
Is the wiki not up to date?
#
KartikPrabhu
possibly not
#
sketchess
That is even more confusing.....
#
KartikPrabhu
but again that page has very little to do with using microformats. It is a recommendation about writing sensible HTML
#
gRegorLove
The microformats wiki page on POSH is older, references HTML4 and XHTML. Same applies to HTML5 though, including newer, semantic elements in HTML5
#
KartikPrabhu
basically it says "don't use <div> when you mean <button> or <p>
#
sketchess
What does that mean 'sensible'?
#
gRegorLove
What are you working on currently, sketchess?
#
sketchess

#
sketchess
Is their a way to check, if a microformat is working?
#
KartikPrabhu
sketchess: yes! you can try it out on http://pin13.net/mf2-dev/
#
KartikPrabhu
again some parsers might behave differently sometimes

(twitter.com/_/status/1014231233147088897)
#
sketchess
Is it worth it.... implementing microformats?
#
KartikPrabhu
depends on what you are using it for?
#
KartikPrabhu
microformats are useful if you want other people to parse your page to get information from it
#
KartikPrabhu
if you want to simply display something in a browser HTML is fine
#
@wakest

#
sketchess
Well, I doubt that I have a propper understanding what the term 'parsing' even means. That's why I try to find out, if it will be a waste of time for me or not.
#
KartikPrabhu
sketchess: the point is what is your goal?
#
sketchess
good question.... I have no idea
#
KartikPrabhu
then that is first thing to decide rather than whether to use microformats or not
#
sketchess
Where you asking in general terms or specifically?
#
[kevinmarks]
The specific indieweb value is that if you use microformats then our tools have a better chance of understanding what your page is about. Is it a post, a note, a reply, an event, a list of posts; who wrote it, what is their name and photo etc
#
KartikPrabhu
specifically. If the term "parsing" means nothing to you then you probably don't need it
gRegorLove joined the channel
#
sketchess
hah....that made me remember a thing.... I considered the slight use of microformats because of search engines....
#
KartikPrabhu
I doubt if search engines care too much about microformats
#
KartikPrabhu
and IMO, that is not a good use-case for microformats anyway
#
gRegorLove
sketchess: aaronpk's post about sending your first webmention walks through adding microformats and shows the advantage they give when it comes to commenting across indieweb sites: https://aaronparecki.com/2018/06/30/11/your-first-webmention
#
Loqi
[Aaron Parecki] Sending your First Webmention from Scratch
#
KartikPrabhu
right. Microformats are more useful for stuff like that^ sending your replies/likes to other indiewebsites etc... rather than search engines
#
gRegorLove
It can let the receiving site show your name, photo, etc.
#
sketchess
Thank you Kartrik, webmentions are not my thing.
marclaporte joined the channel
#
KartikPrabhu
sketchess: right. So it depends on what your thing is. Pick the tool that does what you want
#
sketchess
in other words, in my case it is more a waste of time..... I always wondered if it would be of a good use, if for example a links is stated as a gateway to other language version of a specific website. stuff like that
#
KartikPrabhu
sketchess: those things are useful and are handled by rel-alternate and lang attributes
#
sketchess
well I make use of lang...
#
Loqi
existing rel values
#
KartikPrabhu
right, if you use rel="alternate" along with lang on a link it means "here is an alternate version of this page in this language"
#
KartikPrabhu
no need to microformats for that
#
sketchess
I wish, I could understand more of tech stuff and all those differences. Kowing any good place to learn more of kind of that code.
#
sketchess
?
#
KartikPrabhu
I don't know of anything comprehensive since it depends on the usage
#
KartikPrabhu
Imostly learn these things by doing them and asking questions to people who might know
#
sketchess
I learn by seen code examples, play and trying out all kind of things I possibly / might could put together and see what and how it works in the end.
#
sketchess
a hint like rel="alternate" by itself does not have much meaning for me
#
sketchess
the context is key
#
KartikPrabhu
rel="alternate" is useful in conjuction with other properties. With lang it is a version in a differnet language. With type="application/atom+xml" it is an Atom feed etc...
#
stevestreza
`rel` specifies the link's relationship, there's a bunch of common rel types here https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML/Link_types

KartikPrabhu
has no idea what that syntax is
#
sketchess
a random word group
#
sketchess
switching their positions to make my point
#
KartikPrabhu
not sure why that is relevant. HTML attributes are independent of the order
#
KartikPrabhu
lang="fr" rel="alternate" is the same as rel="alternate" lang="fr"
#
sketchess
but.... html tags can have the nature of a sentence in itself...
#
KartikPrabhu
this is getting too much into "philosophy" for me
#
aaronpk
is completely lost. may I suggest taking the HTML/markup discussion to #indieweb-dev
