That's what I was suggesting with a DHT - if you use one of the DHT hash functions you can get a deterministic order that is consistent as you add sites.

petermolnar
[mrkrndvs]: micropub is a POST, essentially it creates a new entry; activitypub is more like websub/pub under indieweb terms
#
[jgmac1106]
@petermolnar I think he is also trying to get at the why? In our little corner of the web we see a lot of big names going with activitypub and not micropub as the api to create and write post. I think [mrkrndvs] is looking at the philosophical underpinnings of the choice. Why one over the other? Why doesn't IndieWeb use ActivityPub? Why does rest of the world ignore micropub?
#
petermolnar
those are very interesting existential questions
#
sknebel
activitypub doesn't replace Micropub
#
[mrkrndvs]
Yes, that is exactly what is was wondering. Thank you Greg
#
petermolnar
but... isn't activitypub only an rss replacement?
#
sknebel
or rather, it has a part for the same role as Micropub, but that's not used at all to my knowledge
#
petermolnar
micropub basically turns anything into a headless cms
#
sknebel
what people use is the server-to-server part of ActivityPub, and that's roughly does what feeds/Websub/webmention do
#
[jgmac1106]
yes, but @sknebel but few support both, and everything in the OER space seems to be going with activitypub just trying to get a existential questions before coffeee, always dangerous
#
[jgmac1106]
but that you both, that helps a ton. @mrkdvs those who use the server-server activitypub seem to rely more on the json rdf markup of scehma.org rather than the easier to use mf2, though you can have both and play everywhere
#
sknebel
its not schema.org, it's ActivityStreams
#
[jgmac1106]
but thank* you
#
[jgmac1106]
thanks again for clearing up misundertanding
#
[jgmac1106]
What is ActivityStreams?
#
Loqi
ActivityStreams (AS) is a standardization effort to define common types of objects and actions (verbs) taken on various social media sites https://indieweb.org/ActivityStreams
#
sknebel
our page for it might not really be up to date
yar joined the channel
#
sknebel
some rough points I can think of right now: AP uses JSON based endpoints instead of parsing from html. it's more optimized for the many user per server scenarios (like mastodon). getting a site to work with AP is more effort of basics you have to get running.

Did have a wonderful conversation about photos with [aaronpk] about how Flickr and "art" photos get titles but how Instagram and "memory" photos do not, but how sometimes if any post has a title it is seen as article
#
sknebel
where?
#
sknebel
but yes, the semantics of photo vs post containing a photo vs ... are kind of unclear, especially when multiple photos are involved
#
[jgmac1106]
.oooh geeze gonna head to vhat.indieweb.org to search
#
[jgmac1106]
yeah I was gonna start POSSEing to Flickr which meant adding a title to photos, but another interesting semantic debate before coffeee, not good
#
[jgmac1106]
@sknebel I was just thinking when does a photo cross the line and deserve a title? IRL this is usually a debate of "is this art".......rabbit hole
#
sknebel
hm, that's an interesting perspective. I don't think I post enough photos for it to really have come up. and unclear if "title" in the post sense has to be "title" as in "I choose this explicit name for this image"
#
[jgmac1106]
but in terms of UI a photo on flickr always gets a title
#
[jgmac1106]
but the majority of titles are probably just the filename from the camera
#
[mrkrndvs]

eg. "Cliffs of Dover, 1970-01-01"
