We know little about that ancient culture, and even less about the "web" they used to communicate, but we believe the incantation "utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook" was very significant to them

Decided to use Chris Aldrich's recent alistapart.com article (https://alistapart.com/article/webmentions-enabling-better-communication-on-the-internet) as a first-order hyperlink target for the word "Webmention" in user documentation, for now. It's pretty gooood.
#

That's kind of a weird illustration for it though
#

(I know this is not Chris's doing)

Like, shouldn't the guy on the right be catching the ball for later verification and subsequent representation on his personal domain, instead of smashing it back to the guy on the left? Or maybe this is meant to illustrate proper error handling of invalid mentions. idk.

ephemer0l_19 said: Christel just posted this "denial" on the freenode blog https://freenode.net/news/spam-shake
#
ephemer0l_19
This blog is essentially an ad for the Handshake ICO scam with a one-line "denial" of involvement mixed in there. It's obviously very unethical of Christel to not mention her own involvement in the scam which the blog post promotes.
#
ephemer0l_19
Consider Andrew Lee's involvement, Andrew Lee is Christel's boss at London Trust Media and he also controls the majority of freenode voting rights. Andrew Lee also heads the handshake ICO scam. Coincidence?

do we have examples of "follow" pages which offers solutions for non-indieweb, generic public, to subscribe to a website? It's getting tricky, now that Firefox is planning to remove RSS from it's codebase.

I feel like a lot of the bigger blogs have just been switching to newsletters again in the recent years, petermolnar
#
petermolnar
I was wondering about that, and I reached the conclusion that instead of a newsletter, I'll set up a google groups for my updates, which is owner-post-only - eg. rss via mail. Reasons: google group, because dealing with DKIM and mailing lists is painful, google because it (hopefully) makes things not to go to spam with gmail. I've tried blogtrottr back a long while ago, but that ended up in spam for nearly everyone.
#
petermolnar
for alternative ways, I'll keep thinking.
#
Zegnat
Twitter still seems very popular as a venue for notifications as well. Set up a separate Twitter account for your site and have links to posts automatically go in there
Silversword3 joined the channel
#

given that I'm not using my own account for nearly anything, that could work as well
#
[jgmac1106]
I don't newsletter but send out a weekly digest of post. People subscribe if they want..
#
Zegnat
Feedbin lets me subscribe to newsletters, meaning they end up in my RSS reader. Best of both worlds ;)
#
[jgmac1106]
Lost a ton as I went all IndieWeb and they got a list a mile long of post called (no title).. But I don't monetize so I don't care
#
[jgmac1106]

and a bunch of other mailing providers have free tiers, e.g. I think the indieweb newsletter uses one of these
#
[jgmac1106]
I am okay with niche approach. Build for those with shared values,... The idea of having to do one more thing....
#
[jgmac1106]
Yet my friends who have newslettered for years have massive subscription bases, far exceeding folks subscribing to my blog
#
Zegnat
I have subscribed to, and unsubscribed to, a lot of newsletters. I find them to be very mixed. And the plaintext email versions are often terrible
#
[jgmac1106]
Thought about just sending out my bookmarks and articles as an auto email on Fridays
#
[jgmac1106]
But @petermolnar look at Chris's follow page
#
[jgmac1106]
Just feel I put all this effort into writing on the web for others to find...if the audience too lazy to find my work on their own they can go elsewhere
#
[jgmac1106]
I also don't track analytics because of the privilege of not monetizing
#
[jgmac1106]

in unrelated news, great example of a simple question that indiemap answers well: what fraction of links on the indieweb are relative vs absolute? https://github.com/microformats/mf2py/issues/122#issuecomment-410547625
#
Loqi
[sknebel] First PR: #123 I'd be interested in a somewhat representative sample set for pages to parse: e.g. right now I'd like to know in what ratio encountered urls are relative vs absolute. I maybe could grab 100-1000 random entries from indiemap or brid...
#

answer: 423M links total in the dataset, 158M are relative, so ~37%
