# sl007 Skip https://www.xkcd.com - "Joke Of The Day", GoDaddy Social Media Manager about the "#indieweb" : https://twitter.com/sdepolo/status/1063197516072538114
# @sdepolo @MackCollier I keep hearing this. And talking to folks at #MPB2B and at #indieweb yesterday, I hear I am not the only one finding it harder than expected to change my habits from checking social all day to blogging regularly. https://pbs.twimg.com/tweet_video_thumb/DsE8aOnVsAAgOAi.jpg (twitter.com/_/status/1063197516072538114)
# sindan I just discovered this channel, I like te concept.
# sindan Sad that no one cares much for controlling their own content/etc
# sindan I miss the 90s web, where people wrote their own html. The web has become corporate shit.
# sindan I used to search for anime I liked and got pages written by fans, now the results are wikipedia and youtube. The personal webs seems to have disappeared.
# sindan I need to rant a bit today... don't mind me
# KartikPrabhu sl007: why is that joke of the day? sdepolo has been a very active supporter of indieweb including attending quite a few HWC
# KartikPrabhu sl007: sure but I don't understand what eh criticism of that tweet warrants "joke of the day"
# KartikPrabhu and it is true that indieweb has not solved the problem of "visiting each blog". microsub is a big step forward though
# KartikPrabhu still doesn't sound like a criticism of that tweet
# sl007 I have tried to tell them anything about the indieweb. But all explained the big problem why they all just join a Mastodon instance by one click or MeWe by one click : And the problem was particulary about very bad experiences with webhosting. And there was so much critics about GoDaddy domain parking / selling !
# KartikPrabhu yes. I get that hosting your own website is not a very pleasant experience. but the indieweb should take such criticism and improve on it
# KartikPrabhu instead of dismissing it as "bad publicity"
# KartikPrabhu I don't think so
# KartikPrabhu it is pointing out exactly the problem that needs to be solved
# KartikPrabhu how do we make it easier to have your own site, and own your content instead of relying on silos
# KartikPrabhu as long as it is easier to post content on silos than on your own site, people will pick silos
# KartikPrabhu and to be clear, I am not saying this as some outsider. I am not a developer. I do the indieweb things for fun. and maintaining my own site is a lot more work than just defering it to some silo
# KartikPrabhu so @sdepolo's tweet is actually getting to the real problem
# sindan Ah, I've seen these discussions so many times.
# KartikPrabhu sindan: yes! they come up many times because they are legit questions to be asked
# KartikPrabhu afaik only the silos have made it easier for everyone to post content on the web
# sindan I just came to this channel 30 minutes ago. I don't know how the indieweb people are promoting it. I like the idea but normal people are not moved by technical points, or principles like "freedom" in this context.
# KartikPrabhu sindan: exactly why these questions need to be asked and explored
# sindan Well, when something is small, it is usually simpler and more beautiful. Then capitalism comes and says "if this is good, then a thousand quintillions of this must be better, and at low price too"

# sindan The web has been stretched out of its original purpose and people think it's cool to post "meeting this thursday at 19.00" on facecrap. That's not go to change.
# sindan [tantek]: no, it would be cool but what I mean on tech is meant also by others, and Stallman says it better than me.

# petermolnar sl007: I went through so many iterations of closing silos, I basically lost all my communities on the internet at least 4 times by now... I can relate, but the more people with voice supporting/promoting indieweb, the better.

# [Vincent] Hi all, quick question around media and syndication endpoints.
# [Vincent] Am I correct in thinking, if I receive a request parameter to q=config I should return my media endpoint *and* my syndication targets.
# [Vincent] Is the reason for the doubling up to just save traffic requests and keep things simple?
# [Vincent] But if I request parameter to q=syndicate-to I should return only my syndication targets?
# [Vincent] Or have I got it backwards? Any help appreciated!
# [Vincent] I see, that makes sense. Does that make it likely that syndicate-to might get dropped as a recommended process at some point and default to config for future “things”?
# [Vincent] lol
# [Vincent] I think I’ll support both in the short term then and see how it pans out
# [Vincent] awesome, that would make things a lot simpler!
# [Vincent] thanks for your help guys
# [Vincent] I shall, no worries 😉
# [Vincent] thanks, it’s how my brain works. I find it easier to think of technical things as loops or flows of data that move though logic gates

# [jdpinto1] Hello all 👋
# [jdpinto1] I’m trying to figure out how best to set up a basic blog / personal site and have become so overwhelmed with all the possibilities. I know I’m overthinking everything and should just start small, but I’ve become enthralled with the idea of the IndieWeb and really want to do this right. I have some basic experience with front-end design and Jekyll, but not much. WordPress seems to be the way to go for IndieWeb compliancy, but so many people
# [jdpinto1] static sites that I’d rather start there if that’s where I’m going to end up anyway. Just looking for some advice. Would it be better for a relative newbie like me to create a simple WordPress blog with all the IndieWeb plugins, or is it reasonably straight-forward to create a Jekyll site on GH-Pages with webmentions and the works? Is micro.blog considered part of the IndieWeb? Any links to helpful posts, etc. would be really awesome :thumb

# [cleverdevil] Is anyone here a GarageBand expert? Trying to figure out how to add chapter markers for a podcast... I have added "arrangement markers" which I thought would be the right thing, but when I export to WAV and open in Forecast, it doesn't import the chapters.

# [cleverdevil] [jdpinto1] welcome! Lots of options for sure. WordPress is a great option for self-hosting a website. Getting WordPress dialed in for IndieWeb can be a bit daunting, but you've got a great community here to help guide you. Micro.blog is likely a faster path, but you won't get a lot of features that you may want (like showing webmentions on your site).
# [cleverdevil] You can also consider Known, which is what I use for my site.
# [cleverdevil] Its easier to get dialed in than WordPress, and is pretty compliant right out of the box.
# [cleverdevil] That said, it has a much smaller community.
# [jgmac1106] I am using Known as well, but I am going to have just a few static websites. I used to use WordPress+Known for very long time

# [jdpinto1] Wow, those were some quick answers! Tinkering is definitely one of my weaknesses, so I’m sure I’ll keep changing things and trying out new tools here and there. But first I just need to get up and running!
# [jgmac1106] Here is where I am currently tinkering, using glitch as my staging sever,: https://jgmac1106homepage.glitch.me/ and then my social feeds will be on https://quickthoughts.jgregorymcverry.com
