Hey hoomanist, welcome! Due to the US Holiday this week, the chat might be a bit more quiet. Just so you know, it’s not you 🙂
#
the_hoomanist
Thank Eddie. I can stop crying now. :D :D
#
the_hoomanist
I'm reading the Getting started documentation and. rel-me
#
the_hoomanist
But still not sure
#
[eddie]
The first step of IndieWeb is just having your content on your own domain name.
#
the_hoomanist
What's step 2? :D
#
[eddie]
That’s great! After that, a couple directions you can look into based on what you want to accomplish
#
[eddie]
If you want to communicate with others you can look into webmentions
#
[eddie]
It allows two different websites to communicate between each other. Like reply to other posts, or like posts, etc.
#
jacky
yup, some awesome stuff there
#
[eddie]
If you want to get your content out for broader reach you can look into what is called POSSE (Post Own Site first, Syndicate Elsewhere). There are various tools that can help you syndicate posts from your site to other sites/social media
#
the_hoomanist
Since I use Ghost, it looks like I'm out of luck for easy solutions. But I'm not much into the comments/likes thing.
#
[eddie]
Gotcha
#
[eddie]
If you are interested in controlling your reading experience you can check out Social Readers
#
[eddie]
What are readers?
#
Loqi
A reader (AKA indie reader or social reader) in the context of the indieweb is the portion/feature integrated into an indieweb site that provides a way to read content from other indieweb sites, possibly including posts from the current site, and respond (like, comment, repost, etc) inline in the reading UI itself https://indieweb.org/readers
#
[eddie]
That has some of the latest info about that stuff
#
the_hoomanist
I will, thanks. Right now I use a convoluted setup with Zapier to reformat and distribute stuff
#
[eddie]
Also anything else you’re wanting to achieve just let us know and we can help point in the right direction
#
the_hoomanist
It feels so good to have a good human being helping out
#
the_hoomanist
Thank you Eddie
#
[eddie]
My pleasure 🙂
#
the_hoomanist
Are you the same Eddie behind Indigenous?
#
GWG
That's him
#
GWG
The Eddie.
#
[eddie]
Yep, that’s me
#
[eddie]
Hahahaha
#
the_hoomanist
Dah Eddie?
#
Loqi
[eddie]: lol
#
the_hoomanist
Honored :)
#
GWG
Husband to Ashley, father to Luke, etc
#
the_hoomanist
That's where I was at.
#
the_hoomanist
Chick-fil-a
#
[eddie]
It was some delicious chicken tonight!
#
the_hoomanist
Almost stopped at one myself.
#
GWG
Never been
#
GWG
I was at a burger joint in Great Neck
#
the_hoomanist
No judgement, GWG.
#
GWG
There is judgement on chicken choices?
#
GWG
I have a good one if you are ever in NY
#
GWG
But that requires a visit to the off topic chat room
#
the_hoomanist
WE'll leave it to that
#
the_hoomanist
So for my simple brain: Social readers are like a super powerful client for RSS and other kind of syndication technologies
#
the_hoomanist
Like Microsub?
#
[eddie]
Yeah the goal of social readers are about having all the content you want to follow in one place and, being able to post back to your website when/if you wish
#
the_hoomanist
Plus interacting and bouncing off different sources and similar things
#
[eddie]
Providing more of a social media type experience for the rss and other feeds
#
[eddie]
Yep, you’ve got it!
#
GWG
Microsub is just a protocol that separates the parsing from the display.
#
the_hoomanist
Gotcha. So it's like the legitimate version of me turning everything I want in RSS, and using Lire on iOS
#
the_hoomanist
with rsshub app.
#
the_hoomanist
Plus using pinboard+zapier to republish and share on Ghost and social media
#
the_hoomanist
Well, just a little bit better. But basically it's the good version of what I try to do terribly on my own
#
[eddie]
Yep, seems similar. One benefit of Microsub is that you can use multiple different interfaces. Like on mobile I use Indigenous and on a desktop I use one called Monocle or Together depending on what I want to do
#
[eddie]
So it allows my content to follow me regardless of what app I want to use
seekr joined the channel
#
the_hoomanist
Awesome. Is there something that, idk, I can put on digital ocean, point a domain at it, and offer to people? Like an interface for it?
#
GWG
the_hoomanist: There is, but it isn't easy yet. You can self-host Aperture, aaronpk's Micropub system
#
the_hoomanist
I'm on Aperture now and will look into that
#
[eddie]
I gotta head out, nice chatting with you the_hoomanist! Hope to see you around!
#
[eddie]
👋 GWG
#
the_hoomanist
Thank you Eddie!!
#

#

To the POSSE approach, everyone is on its own, right? Like if I through Zapier repost Ghost stories to "silo" websites
#
the_hoomanist
Is that considered POSSE?
#
[tantek]
what is Zapier
#
Loqi
Zapier is a task automation service, similar to IFTTT, with free and paid tiers https://indieweb.org/zapier
#
the_hoomanist
So say I post a story on https://hooman.ist with podcast and full transcript and cover picture
#
the_hoomanist
Zapier takes it from Ghost through APIs, or via RSS, and reformats the cover picture for Instagram, taking the meta description as Insta description, and tags as Instagram tags
#
the_hoomanist
Then does the same to Twitter, making a twitter card. Then to LinkedIn Pulse and Facebook
#
GWG
POSSE is Post to your Site and Syndicate Elsewhere. How you do it is up to you. There is no standard for it
#
[tantek]
Oooh that's sound very cool the_hoomanist
#
the_hoomanist
Then goes into a subreddit and same, a maling list draft in from Markdown to HTML on Emailoctopus, etc etc
#
[tantek]
Well there are some guidelines and common practices, like the use of permashortlinks
#
[tantek]
GWG, not sure it is entirely accurate to say "there is no standard for it"
#
[tantek]
the_hoomanist have you setup IndieAuth on your primary site yet?
#
the_hoomanist
right. So, before I reshare, I pass everything on Bit.ly, and use a custom vanity url, hmnst.club/whatever
#
[tantek]
and tried logging into the wiki?
#
GWG
I meant it is not something like Microsub where there is a specification
#
the_hoomanist
No I have not!
#
[tantek]
would be great to capture what you've done with Zapier as an example / how to on the /Zapier page!
#
[tantek]
then that's a great place to start, setting up your IndieAuth
#
GWG
I agree
#
GWG
Documenting a good process helps others
#
the_hoomanist
I never documented anything. I have a podcast production class and sometimes I show them this stuff when I get to the "Independent Creator Promotion" part
#
the_hoomanist
But it's pretty much me talking for 1hr
#
[tantek]
"documented" sounds so formal 🙂
#
[tantek]
the summaries you typed in above would be a great start
#
[tantek]
re: using Zapier to POSSE
#
[tantek]
even if you just listed yourself as an example, and said what you did with Zapier for each POSSE destination
#
[tantek]
it helps others who may be considering using Zapier similarly. like a map of sorts
#
[tantek]
Even if you just added a plain text paragraph or list of the things you noted above that would be great
#
the_hoomanist
I think I 'll draft an article on my blog, and then reshare it in a wiki format
#
[tantek]
plenty of folks here to help format wiki pages with headings etc.
#
[tantek]
that would be great!
#
GWG
I have a tendency to be formal, I admit. It's my profession.
#
GWG
Think of it as writing your experience and sharing it with us
#
[tantek]
But GWG I have never seen you in a bowtie or suit 🙂
#
GWG
[tantek]: I write very formal documentation at work
#
the_hoomanist
Sometimes I can pretend to be formal.
#
the_hoomanist
But that's it.
#
GWG
We talk about documenting processes all the time there, because no one did, then they did a massive voluntary severance, and we lost a lot of institutional knowledge

can I include an hcard invisibly in the footer of every page? Does it make sense if I don't want to display the hcard on every page?
#
GWG
An h-card can be <a href="www.example.com" class="p-author h-card" />My Name</a>
#
GWG
It doesn't have to be a full bio
#
the_hoomanist
So far I generated this. But idk if makes any sense to make it invisible in the footer
#
the_hoomanist
<div id="hcard-Simone-Salis" class="vcard">

#
the_hoomanist

#
[tantek]
clearly we need to upgrade the hCard generator to support mf2 h-card 🙂
#
[tantek]
usually doesn't make sense to include anything invisible in a footer
#
the_hoomanist
I added style="display: none;"
#
[tantek]
yeah that
#
GWG
the_hoomanist: As I said, you can make an h-card a link to a page that has a full h-card
#
the_hoomanist
Gotcha, sorry GWG, I didn't realize it when you said that.
#
[tantek]
better to have a small visible h-card than a large invisible h-card
#
GWG
the_hoomanist: I thought you might have missed it. But it seems to be your intent.
#
the_hoomanist
I'll do that. Small link on footer to full h-card
#
GWG
Not a problem.
#
the_hoomanist
makes more sense to me than an omnipresent h-card
#
the_hoomanist
Then I have to get my theme compatible with microformat2 apparently
#
GWG
Theme?

#
petermolnar
[grantcodes]: can we name your design myspace-brutalist, or something similar?
#
[grantcodes]
It is actually using a "brutalist" framework
#
[grantcodes]
It is a thing of beauty
#
petermolnar
I have problems with what's labelled brutalist in webdesign
#
petermolnar
it really doesn't align with the architectural, bruté as concrete brutalism
#
petermolnar
sorry, béton brut
#
petermolnar
this is closer to squired geocities or something like that :D
#
[grantcodes]
Yes, I have seen the term used to also describe monochrome designed with no gradients or curves or anything, which I think makes more sense
#

#
Zegnat
Just scrolling to the form field was an absolute pain

Probably the webview trying to do all those animated gradients and what not.

Combine that with the fact you can accidentally scroll horizontally and it gets bad :P
