hmm looks like there's some broken bits with the links
#

I know why (some posts' internal storage don't work well)

#
sknebel
for my site, right now wondering how to handle posts that have multiple language versions
#
sknebel
if it's worth it to have an explicit notion of "this is the same post in different languages", or just have language indication and two posts
#
Zegnat
I personally like “read this in X” links
#
Zegnat
Or, which I have also seen on some informational blogs: “this article is available in <X>, <Y>, <Z>”
#
sknebel
since I don't show reactions it's not so relevant now, but e.g. is the expectation to mix reactons for all?
#
Zegnat
And if you are adding those links anyway, may as well slap a rel-alternate on there to inform computers that it is the same content
#
sknebel
I also see people sometimes tweet in two languages in one tweet, which is interesting for notes
#
Zegnat
That’s a good question. I would say yes? Me preferring to read the article in English does not mean I wouldn’t want to see a German response
#
[tantek]
Rel=alternate requires hreflang, and a separate page
#
Zegnat
I would put it on separate pages, yes. But maybe that wasn’t your idea, sknebel?
#
[tantek]
I like the idea of exploring showing them in the same page, and frankly allowing for multilingual comments!
#
[tantek]
Twitter works kinda like that
#
[tantek]
With in-place “translate” buttons
#
[tantek]
You could do something similar
#
[tantek]
Except your translations would be what you wrote not automatic :)
#
Zegnat
For multilingual responses I wonder if some sort of filtering is nice to have. Thinking of YouTube, I sometimes wish I could filter out comments I know I cannot read anyway and get a better grasp of the discussion I could join in on

🇬🇧🇺🇸Well seems like the Baofeng UV-5R antenna is only resonant on 2m...

#
[tantek]
Nice example! Add to /translations#Twitter
#
[tantek]
Zegnat I prefer twitter UI where I can selectively translate the replies that I don’t understand
#
[tantek]
Rather than skipping
#
Zegnat
Hmm, I don’t think that would ever work for the sub-threaded 200+ youtube comment lists I sometimes scroll through. If I am looking to interact, I am looking for a place I can jump into, which would not be 1 level deep on a Russian side-discussion
#
Zegnat
I guess it depends a lot on the context of what you are trying to achieve
#
Zegnat
My mum does something similar on Facebook where she posts with up to 4 languages in a single note, sknebel
#
Zegnat
And sometimes she splits it up over multiple notes. She even set up a system where she writes a note in Dutch and only presents that to her Dutch friends, and then the German translation only to German native friends, and so on.
#
Zegnat
There are many different systems :)
#
sknebel
ah, with the group targeting in FB? clever
#
sknebel
(and if they still had an API one could make an app for that ...)
#
sknebel
although that then splits the reactions

waaah, installing NVDA (screenreader) and the installer automatically turns on some windows feature (or laods its own code already?) that reads everything you hover the mouse over, system wide...
#
[tantek]
Aaronpk do you have this article also posted on your own site? https://www.godaddy.com/garage/an-indieweb-reader-my-new-home-on-the-internet/

sknebel, with the per-post audience settings. She has prepopulated lists that her friends are sorted into. Some of them based on relations (e.g. list of close family members), some based on native language (e.g. Dutch, German, …). It is a really interesting setup.
#
Zegnat
But yes, it does split responses, which is too bad, since there are definitely people on one list that might like to see interactions from the other list
#
Zegnat
So things like best wishes during the holidays often get 1 post with all languages in it, so people get to interact

Sknebel I’m mobile right now but can you add that article to somewhere near the top of /reader? Th GoDaddy version is already in the see also but I think it’s worth emphasizing (and linking to Aaronpk’s version near the top, before the screenshots)
