Will anything be live streamed from IWC Utrecht today, at the start [Rose] [Zegnat]? Or just the demo’s in the afternoon?
[Rose] joined the channel
#
[Rose]
I can plan a live stream for the start as well
#
[tonz]
would be good, to get the gist of what people plan to be working on
#
[Rose]
I don't think we'll upload that video. But I'll record it just in case.
#
[tonz]
for me watching along is enough, uploading for later not needed imo
#
[Rose]
Intros and demos will be streamed on https://zoom.us/j/561359298

Starting in a few minutes, people are still waking up

No one is narrating?

GWG
Zegnat built a search tool for WordPress sites. Fun
#
GWG
I missed, how did the list of sites get generated. I get how he got the data
#
GWG
Pink and Rose are close enough
#
Zegnat
Currently: manually. Started with a list of WP users here at the IWC. Then I added a few from /WordPress
#
GWG
Zegnat: If someone comes up with the spec for an indieweb search endpoint, its easy enough to implement
#
GWG
Why not volunteer?
#
Zegnat
OpenSearch already exists, and already has a WordPress plugin. Just need more testing.
NinjaTrappeur joined the channel
#
GWG
And it supports extensibility if we wanted to add post types and such
#
Zegnat
Alternatively I could work with h-feed. That would then require that all search result pages have correct h-feeds.
#
aaronpk
My website supports open search! And the resulting list of posts is marked up with microformats so should be easy to handle
#
Zegnat
I simply hadn’t decided how I wanted to do the fetching, decided that WP JSON Endpoint would be a nice quick one for a prototype
#
GWG
They also, to the point of the individual yesterday, it looks like there is support for a json return, which is what I think was mentioned as an issue

I need to fix that feature
#
GWG
It was not documented that it should be limited to recent pictures
#
GWG
So it shows last picture of all time.
#
GWG
You probably need the ActivityPub plugin
#
Zegnat
This is all powered by the ActivityPub plugin by pfefferle
#
Zegnat
Sorry, not in the right mind to keep up with notes …
#
GWG
Okay. It should work then
#
GWG
Note to self. Build that feature that allows you to reply to inline comments with a post.

#
GWG
No, I'm fine
#
GWG
Why not? Where do you want to have them stored?
#
GWG
It stores them as a hidden post type, if I recall correctly.
[aaronpk], snarfed and [tonz] joined the channel
#
[tonz]
@GWG I’m hesitant to store them in the posts, as I follow hundreds of feeds, a much larger volume than the total number of posts in my blog of the past 17yrs. So it is bloating the db quite a bit. Mostly for now, as I want to tinker with the Yarns code, it means I don’t want to do it on my live site, and risk borking something. (Tinker as in, I’m looking into how I could add tags to feeds, think virtual channels for on the fly subsets: “what
#
[tonz]
keeping them busy lately” “what do my #closestfriends blog about this week”
#
GWG
[tonz]: I understand about the size. But remember it does purge them or will when complete. Either way, it has to store them somewhere. A future version might have different storage options, but most users won't want to deal with that
#
GWG
[tonz]: Curious as to alternate storage suggestions
#
[tonz]
@GWG: purging, yes, although I like to keep things available a longish time (say 6 weeks or so), as my posts referencing stuff usually have a certain gestation time. Agreed, it needs to be stored somewhere. I asked [jackjamieson] on Twitter if there’s a specific reason it is in wp_posts. I think many plugins put their stuff in wp_postmeta, but probably only possible if related to a post in wp_post?
#
[tonz]
thank you all for IWC Utrecht this weekend!

[tonz]: I suggested the post table to him
#
GWG
The meta table is for data attached to posts.
#
GWG
Feeds work like posts
#
[tonz]
ok, understand
snarfed joined the channel
#
GWG
External table is an option, but still in your database
#
[tonz]
yes, something like that might be better, as it at least stays away from the actual posts table

[tonz] Thanks for the suggestion. GWG is correct that I was following his advice. The advantage is that Yarns can easily use WordPress’s built in methods for querying posts. Since feed items are essentially the same as posts, this works pretty well. I share some of your apprehension for filling up wp_posts, especially if you follow a lot of feeds, but I’m not sure if this would actually cause problems in practice. I’m open to using
#
[jackjamieson]
though would have to think/talk through it to figure out the pros and cons
#
GWG
jackjamieson, my suggestion was out of practicality
#
GWG
Most people don't want complexity
#
GWG
Like the cron discussion
#
GWG
Progressive enhancement
#
GWG
So you build something first that requires no technical capability
#
GWG
Then add an upgrade option
#
[Rose]
I would personally be very much for a separate table. If only for the advantage that if/when I want to switch to another CMS I can then be sure that everything in the posts table is the stuff I should be exporting.
chrisaldrich joined the channel
#
chrisaldrich
for ease of engineering, I'd recommend to continue using the same table, however...
#
chrisaldrich
It would be nice if I could set up a separate instance of WP so I could collect huge amounts of reader data without interfering with my main website, then...
#
[Rose]
Ease of engineering is a valid argument.
#
[Rose]
(And this conversation should probably move to dev?)
#
chrisaldrich
it would be nice if I could reply in that separate reader server instance and then micropub my responses/replies to my primary site for indicating that I've read/liked/commented on them.
