[jacky] thanks for those digital gardens notes. I think I've been following some/most of it for the past couple of months. The volume is definitely getting louder. @Mappletons is definitely leading some of the charge and has some interesting UI thoughts.

We really ought to get her to pop in over here....
#
[chrisaldrich]
maybe a keynote at the next camp?
#
jacky
that sounds like a plan!
#
[chrisaldrich]
We had invited her to the gardens and streams session. She couldn't make it but sent one of her colleagues....

GWG: I saw the logs where you said that webmentions is only advertised on pages that support it. Is there a specific setting that can prevent some blog posts from having webmention support? I've got posts that seem to have the same settings (format: standard, kind: article). One gets webmentions fine, the other doesn't. The only obvious
#
jamesvandyne
difference, I see is the one with multiple categories selected doesn't get webmentions. Thanks :)
#
GWG
jamesvandyne: Unfortunately, webmentions still respect the comment and pings open setting

What is Gardens and Streams?
#
Loqi
The Garden and the Stream was a session at IndieWebCamp Pop-ups 2020 https://indieweb.org/Gardens_And_Streams

petermolnar back to the aggregator collection tought, I logged into Feedly today for first time in long time, they have these new "boards"
#
[jgmac1106]
you add links and reactions, and board can be shared between Feedly readers and you can subscribe through RSS (or through Feedly which many times doen't use RSS as an RSS reader)

what is gardening
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "gardening" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "gardening is ____", a sentence describing the term)

Wonder how I can use this data on my site
#
cambridgeport90
There's lots of data that could show up, honestly. The thing right now is that seemingly there are no methods of getting it into particular systems. Too few APIs have plugins for Wordpress, at least.
#
GWG
cambridgeport90: I can fix that
#
cambridgeport90
Then again, some of the stuff I care about is sort of out there.
#
GWG
cambridgeport90: What do you care about that's out there?

gwg I think it maybe an import/export question...like how do I move data between different IndieWeb tools
#
GWG
[jgmac1106]: In theory, Micropub and Microformats would be pretty reliable
#
GWG
WordPress is iffy on one of those
#
[jgmac1106]
^^ oh yes...WP is iffy on any export...why I have an archived site (that is also arching everything I am doing on Known right now)
#
GWG
[jgmac1106]: In theory, someone could write a WordPress exporter to a mf2 json document
#
GWG
But for me personally, I'd rather write something to get people in than out... I'd need some motivation to stop building features I care about
#
GWG
Like webmentions
#
GWG
Still working on the new code...
#
jgmac1106
ohh yes I have a long history of trying to /Sawyer a micropub as migration tool, especially bc I have no idea what woulld entail beyond further discussion moving to dev
#
GWG
But I have in the past worked on projects because others motivated me
#

after lots of reflection on the problematic aspects of person-tagged photos being mined for facial recognition systems (ClearView etc.) I'm leaning towards considering a "should avoid" recommendation in particular for any public photo posts
#
[tantek]
or to put it another way, I think I may park/postpone any more work myself on person-tagging of photos until I literally have "protected" or "limited audience" photo posts working
#
[tantek]
one alternative would be private (to me) person-tags on public photos. and an enhancement from that would be protected person-tags only visible to me and the person tagged. and maybe next up from there would be only visible to me and anyone tagged in the photo (can see other person-tags on the photo)

I don't know that we've discussed how to come to any sort of consensus for warning people NOT to implement something due to possible harms but I'd like to put a warning label at the top of /person-tag accordingly
#
[tantek]
I don't feel it's right for me to do that single-handedly though
#
[tantek]
Maybe I can start with adding to a Criticism section but that doesn't feel strong enough
#
jacky
I think it's definitely worth putting a label on it
#
jacky
at least from a use-case standpoint
#
[tantek]
it might be the first feature we actually warn people could cause harm to other peoplel
#
jacky
an anti-feature?
#
jacky
hmm no

tantek, based on our past discussions, I think your idea about person tagging is a good one. +1 for warning >> criticism.
#
aaronpk
or the way to phrase that as a positive is that the recommendation is to make the person-tags protected (rather than saying not to post person-tags)
#
jacky
hmm yeah
#
aaronpk
but yeah i like tantek’s idea
#
jacky
what's that thing from improv?
#
[tantek]
yes, and
#
jacky
yup lol

haha I prefer yup lol

There is a culture now of not only avoiding tagging people but actively obscuring them in public photos eg https://twitter.com/beckiiwhiting/status/1280148644025507846?s=20
#
[tantek]
yup, that's next level
#

Completely ignoring the context of that post, bonus points for the 可愛い hearts!

#

blogchain is /webring
#
[chrisaldrich]
sort of, but there's an alternate distributed conversational version of that too... I'll pull out some examples later...
#
aaronpk
i know
#
[chrisaldrich]
but I like the fast-and-loose quick definition too...
#
gRegorLove
Hm, jacky that post just shows "Liked 's post" for me
#
gRegorLove
link works though
#
[chrisaldrich]
Asking that question to google gives: "Did you mean: _blockchain?" ugh..._
#
[chrisaldrich]
gRegorLove, took me a minute to realize that there was a link on "post" there....
#
[chrisaldrich]
in the original, not on news...
#
gRegorLove
oh yeah didn't check to see how it looks on indienews
#
gRegorLove
I think it should be a bookmark instead of like-of, if the intent is to get tantek's post on indienews
#
aaronpk
or it was an accidental syndication to indienews :)
#
gRegorLove
or that :)
#
[chrisaldrich]
I do like how Jacky is giving credit to Indigenous as the posting client. We should sneak something like that into WordPress to help popularize Micropub clients.
#
aaronpk
what is giving credit?
#
Loqi
giving credit is a collection of cultural practices related to acknowledging and attributing text, hyperlinks, quotes, utterances to others, typically by name, as a way of recognizing their contribution(s) https://indieweb.org/giving-credit
