I finally managed to get my wiki page up, though need to add the HTML tags at the top and bottom. I don't think Dear Loqi will recognize me yet.

cambridgeport90 only thing you need to add for Loqi to recognize you is a line with your nickname on https://indieweb.org/chat-names
#
[tantek]
the separate User: page etc is totally optional. happy to answer more wiki/chat infrastructure questions/challenges in #indieweb-meta 🙂

That cool. What about if I added it onto my Wiki page? Which I did.
#
cambridgeport90
I used the infobox template, actually.

seems that Google blocked Element in the Play Store
#
rsheftel88
paulopinto[m] correct. Lots of chatter and discussion on reddit and elsewhere. Bottom line is that Google and the other centralize players are not going to tolerate apps that challenge their control model.
#
paulopinto[m]
so it seems. they've made the last available in F-Droid, fortunately
#
rsheftel88
I am shocked Google allows F-Droid to exist. I would say the era of apps may be over, everything goes back to web based. But then google will ban any web browser other than Chrome, and Chrome will ban certain URLs. Very interesting progression is going to happen

"Google and the other centralize players are not going to tolerate..." this seems true, but this has happened before. At some point, if we're still designing decentralized things that require google's consent, _we're_ the ones who are doing it wrong
#
rsheftel88
[Raphael_Luckom] I totally agree. To do decentralized correctly it needs to be 100% pure of Google/Facebook/Amazon/Apple reliance. Otherwise they will exploit your weakness and take them out
#
petermolnar
> am shocked Google allows F-Droid to exist - thankfully google doesn't have much of a word in that.
#
[Raphael_Luckom]
tbh I like aws
#
paulopinto[m]
i'd like to move to Librem 5 but it isn't available in Europe, afaik
#
rsheftel88
I like AWS as well, but use DigitalOcean because I just can't give money to a company that is contrary to my values
#
rsheftel88
petermolnar why cant google just update Android to not allow any installs outside their app store?
#
aaronpk
if apple can do it google can do it
#
[Raphael_Luckom]
I wrote up my decision to use aws: https://raphaelluckom.com/posts/practitioner_journey.html#fn2 . It's not a slam-dunk argument.
#
[Raphael_Luckom]
distinguish between an insignificant individual account and an important corp account for the purposes of allowing takedowns? AWS's whole business model is reliability and business continuity for enterprise. The idea is to take the dynamic of thoughtlessly crushing things that offend the elites, and aim it at the foundation of the systems those elites depend on.
#
[Raphael_Luckom]
the other advantage that I see to using AWS is thinking through how bans would have to play out. amazon isn't really set up to police the content posted by millions of tiny players. The first move, if they had to do that, would be to set up a DMCA-like system that enabled takedowns. That would suck for small players, but it would also quickly run into another problem--since so many bigcos rely on access to aws to operate, how would aws
#
[Raphael_Luckom]
it's a kinda huge gift to these powerful elites that everyone who opposes them self-segregates into tiny services that are not practically important to the elites' power base

which isn't meant as "don't use DO"--it's _always_ good to have lots of little targets instead of just one. Plurality is awesome.

rsheftel88, aaronpk: google and apple are really not in the same situation. Android has an open source core, and is being given away for manufacturers to customise it for themselves. I don't see how they could enforce play-store only.
#
aaronpk
they could at least do it on their own hardware
#
aaronpk
they could also just stop open sourcing it and switch to some license that limits it
#
petermolnar
they already failed devs with those phones ever since they aren't called nexus, who would be their target audience if they lock it down so much? corporate fleets?
#
petermolnar
aaronpk: it's simple: they can't. Once they do that, people _will_ move to apple, because any benefit android ever had will evaporate.
#
aaronpk
eh i don't think it's that simple
#
aaronpk
i'm pretty sure most people who use android don't use it *because* it's open source
#
petermolnar
no, they use it because it's cheap
#
petermolnar
so apple brings SE back, and profits
#
petermolnar
oh. we're in main, not -chat

let's bring that over there, shall we? :)

By the way, did you guys remove Matrix protocol bridge support for chat rooms? I am trying to rejoin via cambridgeport90:feneas.org, and I'm getting an error that the server is not accessible at this time.
#
aaronpk
we don't run a bridge, you can use any matrix/irc bridge available, i have no idea who runs the one most people use or what its status is
#
cambridgeport90
Looks like I'll have to run it by Feneas, then. Another thing is that when searching under federated chat, our rooms don't actually show up, but that could be because they are bridges over IRC, not true Matrix rooms.Again, will have to ask the Feneas people about that, considering I am a member over there.
#
cambridgeport90
That's the one thing about federation that I sort of dislike, (never thought I'd say that),but sometimes it's impossible to tell who runs what.
#
aaronpk
haha true
#
aaronpk
i think there's also a matrix.org bridge? that's what's listed on https://indieweb.org/discuss anyway
#
cambridgeport90
I find it odd that the bridge is listed on our wiki if we don't actually run it.

i mean we also don't run freenode :)
#
cambridgeport90
ben_thatmustIs there a way I can figure out who's running that bridge and ask whether they are still running it?

ZegnatThis is a really stupid question. Does anybody know whether or not the Compass GPS server will run behind a VPN? I'm trying to host it outside of the server where my site is hosted due to it taking too much valuable disk space on the Plesk server where that site runs.
#
cambridgeport90
ben_thatmustThat would be cool if that could work. My phone would be eternally connected to my VPN at home, so I can't imagine why it wouldn't. aaronpk?
