What is the address of the website?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "address of the website" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "address of the website is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[Bryn_Wolf]
myplanetrider.com
#
[Bryn_Wolf]
I'm trying to organize all the hosting sites, domains, etc for a friend after the previous person left a mess
#
[Bryn_Wolf]
for some reason the website is down. you shuold be able to click the main "power button" on the landing page and it would take you to the site, but it gives an error 404 which shouldn't happen.
#
[Bryn_Wolf]
(I'm also new to this and not an expert, but trying to learn how to make these things work well)
#
cambridgeport90
I am not sure who runs chrisreedtech.com (assuming it's an indieweb site in light of the fact he has micro.blog related content), but when clicking on it from bing, you get a fake flashplayer update download. I have noticed this now with several personal sites.
#
[Bryn_Wolf]
is chrisreedtech.com related to myplanetrider.com ?
#
cambridgeport90
Not sure. However,m the next time I click it from the bing search results, the fake flashplayer update didn't appear. that was weird.
#
cambridgeport90
But when viewing the site itself, I was automatically redirected to some weird page that didn't display. something with a .xyz domain, but it now seems defunct. The auto redirect seems suspect.

[Bryn_Wolf] Was the prior builder/maintainer someone at Fortis Web Systems? On first glance, it looks like it was a custom website build with a splash screen that then likely went to a content management system once that button was clicked. It's likely that the link from the splash screen isn't finding the CMS on the second page. Do you have access to their hosting account?

Based on the http://fortiswebsystems.com/about page, and assuming they built the site, it's likely that it was originally built in WordPress, Joomla, or Drupal.
#
alex11
are names [in brackets] users who are using an irc bridge or something?
#
[Bryn_Wolf]
ah! I saw the FORTIS and was wondering about that...
#
[Bryn_Wolf]
the previous person working on this site is no longer in this world, unfortunately, so I'm just stepping in
#
[Bryn_Wolf]
it's being hosted by google and domain is by godaddy and I have access to both
#
[chrisaldrich]
alex11, if you're looking at the web version of chat, the bracketed people are from Slack, I think.
#
alex11
web version... well, i'm using hexchat
#
[Bryn_Wolf]
[chrisaldrich] ty btw
#
[chrisaldrich]
[Bryn_Wolf] if you have access to the host, then looking at the files there is your best clue as to what is running the site.
#
[chrisaldrich]
alex11, hexchat is an IRC client, the web version I mentioned is at https://chat.indieweb.org
#
vilhalmer
yes, brackets mean slack bridge in irc as well
#
alex11
i'll assume it's slack
#
alex11
i know matrix doesn't look like that
#
alex11
matrix users have an [m]
#
cambridgeport90
Does that include when mentioning people to add the backets around their name?
#
cambridgeport90
I never quite got the hang of it, or am I too used to other more modern chat protocols?
#
[chrisaldrich]
If I recall correctly you should be able to use the base username and the bridge you're on should handle the proper translation for notifications.
#
vilhalmer
weechat at least will add the brackets on tab complete even if you skip the opening one
#
cambridgeport90
I don't think tuat AdiIRC does, LOL
#
cambridgeport90
That's the client I use; .NET based, closer to MIRC.

I was up late working on another feature that takes a lot more time to do correctly vs people noticing

Yes, I think it's my desire to go somewhere

Some of the abuse on here is truly vile. How hard would it be to implement a system where you can’t get an account without photo ID? Removing the cloak of anonymity would surely reduce the number of fooligans & numpties.

#
alex11
studies on that topic would be interesting
#
alex11
whether anonymity really does result in more abuse... probably a bit, but not overmuch
#
[KevinMarks]
parler is the counterexample. Required verification, is primarily abuse
#
aaronpk
I was gonna say... didn't Parler do exactly that?

alex11: I can save you some research time and say it doesn't lol
#

if people _want_ to cause harm , they will - anonymity or not
#
jacky
and ID verification tends to hurt people who needs to be anon (victims of abuse, etc)
#
alex11
oh yeah, i'm not saying one implies the other, that i'm defending a forced id system
#
alex11
just in a vacuum

> studies on that [you can’t get an account without photo ID] topic would be interesting - it's called Facebook. People don't care any more.

676.2K Followers and the person lacks basic understanding of the current day internet? Beautiful.

Just caught myself up on the stuff from this morning. Not sure how I feel about ID verification for account creation. I think it's necessary for some things that require actual info for legal purposes, but otherwise, no.

And Gods this interface.
#
cambridgeport90
In relationship to this, though, in terms of silos, why Facebook requires my real name, even in my user name, which I actually forget since I can't use my normal alias, yet Instagram lets me be my normal Cambridgeport90 user name. Confusing.
#

(I have my real name also showing up on Insta, but you can @me in the normal way.)
